Bog fire at Ballyvergan Marsh - Youghal (1980s)
Dangerous bush fires in the bog back in the 1980s. You can see the old wooden stiles which were either side of the track that you would climb over to get to the other side. Right beside the stiles were the large iron gates which were opened by the farmer to let the cattle and farm animals safely cross the track to graze at the other side. There was a warning sign on the gate to keep closed or else a fine would be incurred of a few shillings. The right-of-way continued right down to the rifle range where the famer's would keep their salmon boats for fishing all along the beach from the Rifle Range to Red Barn. The area they fished were called berths and these berths were usually named after the farmer/fishermen. Some of these berths were considered the best for salmon fishing in all of Youghal. The farmers had great respect for the land and in times gone by would set controlled fires to clear the reeds and bush in the bog with permission from the gardai. This was done out of season of course to avoid birds nesting in later months. The bog is a living breathing wildlife habitat and has a dynamism of its own which is a spectacular sight to watch during the annual agricultural cycle. The men and women who worked the land knew how it worked and had great respect for it. You could see this during the traditional turf cutting season. The turf was cut with a spade called a sleán. The turf was very wet so it was stacked and left to dry in the sun and wind over the summer months and then to heat the house in the open fire and cook during the winter months. It was like an ecological theatrical scene where the animals, humans, and the natural habitat all starred in an environmental style play. The stage was the bog. It was a living community. Everything revolved around the heart of the fire where stories were told. The woman of the house had full command of this area and ruled the roost. After the Cork-Youghal Railway stopped running the trains back in the 80s the rail track went into disrepair due to lack of maintenance. What arrived after the closure was the low life vandals having no respect for the wildlife habitat and set fire to the reeds in the dry season and doing untold damage to the flora and fauna not to mention the danger to life and limb. The fires in the pictures show how dangerous this can be and the total destruction of bog land beside the Youghal to Cork railway and the old telegraph poles that ran parallel to the line at Ballyvergan marsh.
