The Irish Naval Ship L.É. CIARA paid a surprise visit to the harbour town yesterday, Tuesday 12th March 2013, as part of its navigation exercises off Youghal Harbour. The Officer Commanding L.É. CIARA is Lt Cdr Brian Sweeney with a crew of 40 approx. Locals and tourists were suprised to see the ship from the vantage points along the Quay and no other than the proud parents of Chief Petty Officer Michael ( Rocky) Cashell from Youghal who was at the wheel of the LÉ Ciara as she steamed up the river Blackwater. Sail Aweigh - Cappoquin 2010
On an afternoon in 2010 we headed off to Cappoquin on 'Nightvision' our 6.7mtr Training RIB. Having finished a course we struck off up the River Blackwater. This film was made, edited and gifted to us by one of the students - Eugene Mehegan.

Marathon Swimmer Owen O' Keefe gets a hero's welcome in Youghal
Long distance swimmer Owen O'Keefe arrived to a hero's welcome in Youghal, Co Cork after successful completing his non-stop solo swim from Fermoy to Youghal in a time of 12 hours 8 minutes.
Owen began his epic journey at 7:00am from Fermoy Rowing Club, with crew consisting of three trusty kayakers, Donal Buckley, Mona Sexton and Maura Murphy. Having crossed weirs at Fermoy, Clondulane and Lismore and the many rapids in between, he reached tidal waters before the town of Cappoquin. There, he was greeted by the support boat, a 28-foot half-decker called Maeve Óg, captained by Tony Gallagher of Blackwater Cruises and his first mate, his little terrier, Pharaoh! The long distance swimmer celebrated with family and friends at the quayside in Youghal before having a quick shower and retiring to the nearby Quay's Bar and Restaurant where he and the crew were served complimentary steak and spuds.
Owen O'Keefe, a native of Fermoy, County Cork is a renowned open water swimmer from Ireland and is among the most famous swimmers of Sandycove Island. He received the Margaret Smith Award from the Irish Long Distance Swimming Association in 2012 for his individual contributions to open water swimming and organised the 2012 Irish Long Distance Swimming Association award ceremonies and the Martin Duggan Memorial Swim.
