Day Trip to Blagaj Dervish House from Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina travel vlog
While in Mostar, we took a day trip to visit the town of Blagaj. This place is famous for its dervish monastery (Blagaj Tekija or Blagaj Tekke) which sits at the foot of a cliff and next to the emerald green waters of the Buna River. Getting from Mostar to Blagaj is pretty easy (if you don't miss the infrequent bus connections like we did) - it's only 30 minutes by public transit and you can take bus # 11, 12, or 13 to get there. Be sure to check the schedule of the bus as we had the wrong information online and we ended up waiting over an hour to catch it coming to Blagaj from Mostar.
Also, be warned the food is REALLY BAD in Blagaj by the monastery. It was the worst meal we've had all year in Europe with stale poneta and water hummus that tasted like nothing at all. All of the restaurants, the five located by the river, have bad reviews so eat in Mostar which has great restaurants. Also keep in mind this is an easy day trip from Mostar and it should take no longer than 1/2 day to visit here including transportation to and from Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Day Trip to Blagaj Dervish House from Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina travel vlog script:
Good morning guys. Today is a day trip day. Yeah. We are going to Blagaj which is basically like a monastery in a cave by a river. Something like that. It looks beautiful. Basically and it is so close to where we are staying in Mostar.
We stopped at a bakery along the way to pick up a snack for the road, and then we crossed the bridge to the west side of Mostar to catch the bus to Blagaj.
We picked up a little snack along the way. This is post-breakfast. I got myself the mixed cheese burek which is really good. It is almost gone. Um, yeah but now we wanted to show you guys where to catch the bus to visit Blagaj.
Basically it is in front of this giant yellow building. It is called the United World College where there is a bus stop. here is a schedule posted right here at the bus stop. You can take the 10, 11 or 12 and yeah there is just too many times for me to read them all out. So just check it once you're here.
Alright guys so we finally found a restaurant. I was actually checking the reviews on the few restaurants that are in this area. None of the reviews are very high. Everyone says the food is quite mediocre. Um, so we've ordered. I've got some polenta with cheese. Sam got some hummus. Um I will say everything very overpriced. And I've already tried my food and it has not been amazing.
Now for the reason we had come all the way to Blagaj, that would be to visit Blagaj Tekija, a Dervish monastery which is tucked under a cliff and sits by the source of the Buna River. The structure is believed to date back to the 1520s and it contains elements of Ottoman architecture and Mediterranean style, making it a national monument.
Once we were covered up, we were able to visit the monastery. This mainly involves walking through a series of carpeted rooms with a few religious texts and minimal furniture. But I think the main draw are the views you get of the monastery from the other side of the Buna River.
If you visit during the summer months, you can pay to take a short boat ride into the cave. We visited in late autumn, so that wasn’t really an option, but we snapped a few photos and enjoyed the bright foliage.
We have finished our visit. We're walking back to town now to go catch our bus. Yeah. It is time for thoughts Samuel. Thoughts. We'll start with the most positive and it is just absolutely gorgeous setting. Stunning. Some amazing views every it is worth exploring in all directions. Walk across all of the bridges, see it from both sides and so on. The Dervish House I found more impressive on the outside than inside.

Buna Spring & Tekija Blagaj, Mostar, (Bosnia & Herzegovina)
The Buna river is a short river in Bosnia and Herzegovina and it is a left bank tributary of the Neretva river. Its source (Bosnian: Vrelo Bune), a strong karstic spring, emerging from high karstic cavern beneath a high vertical cliff. This region is specific for the diversity of its above-ground and underground hydrography. The source of the Buna river is the finest example of an underground karst river. It's one of the largest and most beautiful springs in Europe, producing approx. 30 m3/s with extremely cold and clean water.
The architectural ensemble of the Blagaj Tekke (a Sufi monastery) stands by the source of the Buna river, not far from the centre of Blagaj. The musafirhana (guest house) and türbe (mausoleum) are tucked into the natural surroundings, constituting a single entity with the cliffs, source of the Buna river and mills. The musafirhana of the Blagaj tekke and the türbe have been preserved to this day. The musafirhana was built before 1664, and rebuilt in 1851 - its original appearance is not known. The building was subsequently repaired on several occasions. The ensemble of the Blagaj Tekke was presumably built very soon after Ottoman rule was established in Herzegovina, around 1520 at the latest.

Vrelo Bune is the natural and architectural ensemble at the Buna river spring situated in the outskirts of Blagaj, some 15 kilometers south-east of Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The source of the Buna river is the finest example of an underground karst river. It's one the largest and one of the most beautiful springs in Europe, producing approximately 43 000 liters of water per second.The water flows through a cave that is part of a 200-meter high stone cliff wall and single-handedly creates the Buna River. The Buna is a short river and it is a left bank tributary of the Neretva river.
By the source of the Buna river also stands the Blagaj Tekke (a muslim dervish Sufi monastery), that was built in the 15th century. The musafirhana (guest house) and turbe (mausoleum) are tucked into the natural surroundings, constituting a single entity with the cliffs, source of the Buna river and mills. The ensemble of the Blagaj Tekija was presumably built very soon after Ottoman rule was established in Bosnia, around 1520 at the latest.
Besides the historic architecture, stunning rocks and river, Blagaj is also home to numerous endemic species and diverse flora.
Vrelo Bune together with the dervish Tekija is curently under UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List.

Throughout its history the region of Herzegovina has been the meeting point of different cultures and civilizations. Today the country has a lot of natural beauties that attract more and more tourists each year.
One of the magical places that take us back to the past is Blagaj, situated only 12 km away from Mostar.
The small and magical village of Blagaj is located on the river Buna.
The Buna spring is one of the largest and most beautiful springs in Europe and probably the best example of underground karst river. Buna flows out from the cave beneath the cliffs of 200 meters high and independently creates a dark blue-emerald green river, which runs for about nine kilometers to the west and flows into the Neretva River near the village of Buna.
The beautiful scenery and rich history had been home dervish house which is one of the most important monuments from the period of early Ottoman culture in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The Dervishes are known for their special rituals performed and are still performed - zikir (praise to God).
The Turkish sultan was delighted with Buna and so he ordered to build Tekke, the monastery of dervishes.
Tekke on the Buna in Blagaj is an important monument of the early Ottoman period in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is a place where, by special ritual, the dervishes performed – and perform today – Zikr (praising God).
Tekke in Blagaj belonged to various dervish orders, first there were Bektashi order, then Halveti and Kaderi orders. Today the place is headed by Vekil (Deputy Shaikh) of Naqshbandi order.
Tekke on Buna was established shortly after the fall of Herzegovina under the Turkish rule in 1446. year, at the latest around in 1520. year. In the earliest period, bektash order was the ruling ideological doctrine of the Turkish conquests, especially of the Army (light shock cavalry) and Janissaries.
Oriental Bosnian architecture Tekke in Blagaj attracts with its white double facade, floor and extended along that looks like a balcony, whose contours are reflected on the surface of the dark green water of the river Buna.
Dervish - Sufi brotherhood best known for his asceticism, and in that preaches one of the most mystical dimension of Islam. Tekke at Buna in Blagaj is open to visitors throughout the year and in her beautiful garden, with a magnificent view of the source of the River serves refreshing drinks, tea and Turkish coffee.
Blagaj and its surroundings are surrounded by a diverse landscape, groundwater and rocky cliffs. Tourists all over visit this place remain amazed at his green and clean water that you meet wherever you turn.

Of all the places I’ve traveled, Mostar in Bosnia, Herzegovina took me by surprise and stole my heart! With cobblestone streets, old medieval buildings, and its beautiful bridge overlooking emerald waters, this place looks like a fairytale and deserves a visit!
Mostar was one of the most heavily bombed cities during the Bosnian war which was a conflict that raged between 1992 and 1995. It was a war of genocide, the first since wwII, and it killed hundreds of thousands, and displaced milions of people. The city is now a UNESCO World Heritage site and it’s gone through a series of detailed reconstruction projects to preserve the historic core and authenticity.

The historic site of the Old Blagaj Fort (Stjepan grad), on the hill above Blagaj, was the seat of Herzegovinian nobleman, Stjepan Vukčić, and the birthplace of Bosnian queen Katarina Kosača-Kotromanić.
During the classical antiquity there existed an Illyrian fortress and a Roman castrum. During the reign of Byzantine Emperor Justinian, several fortified towns were built in the area. Blagaj was mentioned in Constantine Porphyrogenitus’ work De Administrando Imperio as Bona, then part of Zahumlje(Hum).
In the late 12th century, during the rule of Stefan Nemanja (Grand Principality of Serbia), prefect Jurko raised a church dedicated to saints Cosmas and Damian. In the 14th century, during the reign of Bosnian Ban Stjepan II Kotromanić, Hum became part of the Bosnian state. In the 15th century Sandalj Hranić Kosača and his nephew Stephen Vukčić Kosača ruled the Hum and Blagaj territory until the arrival of the Ottomans in 1466. Blagaj is also known as a residential area of Bosnian rulers and particularly of royal families Hranić and Kosača.
In historical sources Blagaj was first mentioned in 1423. During the period of the Ottoman Empire, Blagaj was the seat of the Blagaj Vilayet, and was divided into several neighborhoods. The city had seven mosques, two inns, four musafirhana (guest houses), a madrasa (Bosnian: medresa), two maktab, seven mills and four stone bridges on the river Buna. Bosniaks were majority until 1835, during the Austro-Hungarian period Christians constituted twice as many. An Orthodox Church was built in 1893 and a Roman Catholic church in 1908.
BLAGAJ TEKIJA OR TEKKE - THE DERVISH HOUSE | HISTORIC SUFI MONASTERY
This is our 3rd stop of our Herzegovina Tour. This place is called Blagaj and it houses the famous Dervish Monastery locally know as Tekke, they called it Blagaj Tekija. We had our brunch on one of the many restaurants in the area. The last time we were here the cave boat trip was not available. The souvenir shops before were so few and not that much of tourist, but now its a busy place. The food they served are Halal food mainly because most of the tourist are from Middle East or Arabs.
The famous attraction is the Tekke or Tekija house, its a monatery build for the Dervish cult. The Blagaj Tekija was built around 1520, with elements of Ottoman architecture and Mediterranean style and is considered a national monument

This is a small town, called Blagaj (20 km. from Mostar) (Google Map). Here, near the Buna river spring, there is a beautiful dervish tekke, a holy place for muslims.
The Tekija (Tekke) was built in the 16th century during the reign of Mostar Mufti (A Muslim scholar who interprets the shari'a) Ziyauddin-Ahmed ibni Mustafa . It leans right to the cliffs above the source of the Buna river. The dervishes that lived here used to enjoy friendly talks and scientific discussions. There is a Turbe (shrine, tomb, mausoleum) next to the Tekija where the tombs of long-term sheiks Sari Saltuk and Acik Pasha are found.
The toombstone protect the remnants of Sari-Saltuk and Acik-pasha-longterm sheikh of this Tekija.
In 1851 , Omer -- Pasha Latas repaired the Tekija and the musafirhana, and since 1952, the Tekija has been protected by the State.
It is incredible to see how the water comes out of 200m cliff wall to form the Buna River which later combines to Neretva River. Recordings were made of the swirling blue-green waters emerging from the cave. A must see place which is 20 minutes away from Mostar.
