Avett Brothers Jordan is a Long Road to Travel Santa Barbara Bowl, CA. 10.10.13
Jordan Is a Hard Road to Travel is a song composed by American songwriter Dan Emmett for an 1853 blackface minstrel show. The song became extremely popular throughout the United States.[1] It was recorded in 1927[1] by banjo player and singing entertainer Uncle Dave Macon,[2] an early Grand Old Opry star. The song was later included on the Smithsonian Institution's Folkways collection, Classic Country Music: A Smithsonian Collection. Source:
Here be Dragons 2018: Track A
Sea monsters such as the kraken, prister, and rosmarus indicated uncharted territory on elaborate new maps of the world in medieval times. Despite many advances in mapping technology and data acquisition in the last 500 years, our ocean remains largely uncharted and poorly understood.
Here be Dragons convened explorers, innovators, artists, scientists, and storytellers to identify the uncharted territories that still exist in ocean exploration and storytelling. In response, MIT students will work with explorers to develop and present collaborative projects to deploy new and emerging technologies in the field that address gaps in our understanding and sharing of the ocean. Select proposals will be funded for Rapid Field Deployments.
In collaboration with the National Geographic Society and New England Aquarium.

From the Accelerating Universe to Accelerating Science
Twenty years ago, astronomers were astonished to learn from observations of exploding stars that cosmic expansion is speeding up. We attribute this to a mysterious “dark energy” that pervades the universe and makes up 70% of it. Scientists are working in many ways to learn more about the nature of dark energy, but our reservoir of ignorance is deep. This talk will summarize the present state of knowledge and look ahead to new ways to use infrared observations of supernovae to improve our grip on dark energy. Accelerating scientific discovery is a mission of the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation and Dr. Robert Kirshner will illustrate some of the ways we do that at Berkeley and beyond.

The University of California, Irvine, is a public research university located in Irvine, California, and one of the 10 general campuses in the University of California system. UC Irvine is considered a Public Ivy and offers 80 undergraduate degrees and 98 graduate and professional degrees. The university is designated as having very high research activity in the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, and in fiscal year 2013 had $348 million in research and development expenditures according to the National Science Foundation. UC Irvine became a member of the Association of American Universities in 1996, and is the youngest university to hold membership. The university also administers the UC Irvine Medical Center, a large teaching hospital in Orange, and its affiliated health sciences system; the University of California, Irvine, Arboretum; and a portion of the University of California Natural Reserve System.
UCI was one of three new UC campuses established in the 1960s to accommodate growing enrollments across the UC system. A site in Orange County was identified in 1959, and in the following year the Irvine Company sold the University of California 1,000 acres of land for one dollar to establish the new campus. President Lyndon B. Johnson dedicated the campus in 1964. Fifty years later President Barack Obama spoke at UCI's 2014 commencement ceremony, held at Angel Stadium.
