The Old Lithgow Blast Furnace NSW Australia
The Lithgow Blast Furnace is a place of State significance. It is the birthplace of the modern iron and steel industry and is able to demonstrate industrial processes now lost due to the extent of remaining fabric and documents. It is rare as a survivor of Lithgow's early industrial heritage in its completeness and as an example of early iron smelting works. The rarity of this place is in the fact of its survival as the fast significant industrial site in the town. Other industries left little visible heritage: the steelworks site is entirely barren; the power houses have gone; the copper srneiters, woollen mills, and potteries have left no traces; the coal industry which made the other industries possible is now represented only by the State Mine and the Oakey Park Mine, both on the periphery of the valley.

Lithgow Blast Furnace - Првата Железара во Австралија, во Литгоу
Lithgow Blast Furnace
Location: Inch Street, Lithgow, NSW 2790
Constructed: 1906 - 1907
The history of Macedonian migration to Australia begins in the late 19th century, with the first major wave occurring in the years after World War I. The Balkan region was unstable and employment prospects were poor so young men left their families to find work on the other side of the world. By the early 1920s there were a significant number of Macedonian men working in the steel industry in Lithgow, NSW. When the industry relocated to Port Kembla in the Illawarra in 1928, the Macedonian workers came with it.

Blast Furnace Park
Lithgow's Blast Furnace Park from the air on 14 April 2014. This blast furnace, Australia's first, ran from 1907 to 1927, when it was closed and the workings transferred to Port Kembla in the mid 1930's. The ruins are mostly open for people to explore, but are rarely seen from the air, hence this video.

Fun at the State Mine
With permission today I went for a fly around the State Mine museum in Lithgow. These are the fun outtakes flying the DJI Phantom 2, but it does need a bit of work to remove jello which has crept in now due to a couple of prop strikes in recent weeks (One is in the video - oops, I ALMOST made it!!)
No staff members were around, so I could safely fly through the structures with no fear of hurting the structures themselves or people in the area.
