East Falklands - Bleaker Island
Excursion to Bleaker Island on the East Falklands. It was very windy and rained off and on. We docked on one side of the island and walked about a mile or so to the other side to see a colony of Rockhopper Penguins. One Ocean Expeditions on the Akademik Ioffe. January 7, 2015

Best Places to Visit in Falkland Islands
Covering an area of around 7,500 square kilometers in the southern part of the Atlantic Ocean, the Falkland Islands - Islas Malvinas to the Argentinians - encompass some 778 islands. Despite the fact they're only 483 kilometers off the coast of Argentina and 12,000 kilometers from England, the islands are a British Overseas Territory. The two largest islands in the archipelago, West Falkland and East Falkland, are where you'll find the majority of this tiny country's 3,000 or so residents (most of them of British descent).
Despite its remote location - or perhaps because of it - these cold, hilly islands attract a surprising number of tourists. Served by direct flights from the UK and South America, as well as visited by many cruise ships, the Falklands are perfectly situated to tap into the growing demand for tourists visiting the Antarctic. The Falklands' main attraction is undoubtedly its wildlife; it boasts numerous species of birds and marine mammals, along with a number of great tour options that will get you up close to them. Other popular Falkland Island activities include fishing, trekking, hiking, climbing, kayaking, and mountain biking. Find the best places to visit with our list of the top-rated tourist attractions in the Falkland Islands.

Falkland Islands Sealion Island 360 Video
Located in the southeast of the archipelago, Sea Lion Island is recognised under the Ramsar Convention. The terrain is mainly low lying but with spectacular cliffs at the southern end. Tussac grass proliferates, providing the perfect habitat for a range of wildlife.

Sea Lion Island - Falkland Islands
A video of our one night stay at Sea Lion Island in the Falkland Islands. There are so many things we didn't capture (more of the Straited Caracara, the Orca Whales, the Cobb's Wren we spotted), but this should give you a taster!
Penguin War - Falkland Islands
Visiting Rockhopper penguin colonies on Bleaker Island, south of East Falkland, during A&K Le Boreal Antarctic cruise trip in January 2014. An intense penguin war broke out between the little chicks and adult penguins. Who do you think will win?!?!

A trip to Bleaker Island: It's anything but bleak!
Bleaker Island lies close to the South East coast of East Falkland, at the entrance to adventure sound. It is reached by a 30-minute flight from the country's capital and hosts an array of wildlife from penguins to sea lions (and more). During the high season I visited the Island to see jut how beautiful Bleaker really is.

Cowardly, unprovoked attack by a male Sealion on a sleeping baby pup
Southern or South American Sealions (Otaria flavescens) occur along the coasts of South America and the Falkland Islands. Males are darker in colour and much larger than females – up to 2.7 metres (9 feet) long and weighing up to 350 kilograms (770 pounds). Females grow up to 2 metres (7 feet) long and weigh up to 150 kilograms (330 pounds). Pups are dark brown to black, and enter the water at about 4 weeks old. Mothers remain on the beach with their pups for about a week after birth, then leave them to fish for two- to three days before returning to nurse them. Dominant male Sealions herd females into harems and mate with as many of them as they can, as well as aggressively defending his females against other males. Unsuccessful males, particularly subadults will often raid harems, attempting to displace the dominant male and gain access to his females. Invading males sometimes abduct or kill pups. This harem of Southern Sealions is on Bleaker Island off the south-eastern coast of the Falklands. The dominant male had a harem of 10 females, two of whom had pups. A subadult male sneaked into the far end of the harem, and seemed to be pretending to be uninterested in the females or their pups – but suddenly, after grooming himself for a while, he grabbed a pup by the neck and threw it against foot of the cliff. The pup’s mother challenged the attacker, but he grabbed the pup again by its rump and threw it about 3 metres (10 feet) into the sea. The little pup struggled out of the sea back on to the cobbled beach, with regurgitated milk around its mouth. The dominant male charged the attacker, and drove it from the harem, although it tried to sneak back a few times. The pup re-joined its mother, bleeding freely from its bite wounds, which were then pecked by Snowy Sheathbills and Dolphin Gulls. The pup survived – it was alive two days later.
