Great walks: Blencathra
A BMC TV production with Mary-Ann Ochota, supported by Marmot.
Accessible and with routes to suit everyone, Blencathra is one of Britain’s most popular mountains. The famous author Alfred Wainwright believed its challenging Hall’s Fell ridge was “the finest way to any mountain top in the district.” Was he right?

Blencathra via Sharp Edge, Lake District, England UK
Blencathra via Sharp Edge, Lake District, England UK. We set off from Scales for the trek up to Scales Tarn. There was little wind and the mist cleared by the time we were on Sharp Edge. This was a fantastic hike!

Lake District Country Walk Blencathra from Scales round
Our video is a guided walk in the Lake District from Scales near Keswick. We walk up to Blencathra via Mousthwaite Comb, the River Glenderamackin and Atkinson Pike. We return via Scales Tarn and the slopes of Scales Fell. This is a moderate to hard walk on good paths and tracks with steep inclines and declines.
Elevation: Approx lowest point 217.50m (713.6ft) approx highest point 864m (2834.50ft). Approx 6.8 miles allow at least 4 hours using OS Explorer Map OL5, The English Lakes North-eastern area. Start point: Road side close to Scales located on the A66. For more info please see our website.
Blencathra (Saddleback)
The walk started from the Car Park next to the Blencathra Field Centre in Threlkeld. Ascending up Blease Fell to Knowe Craggs and then going on to the Blencathra Summit.
Interesting there was no cairn on the summit for a change but there was an Ordinance Survey Tiginometry Station (trig point).
The descent was via Halls Fell which may have been easier to ascend rather than descend. The footpath would constantly dissapear and there were often large rocky areas to climb down. Some of these were quite steep and required steady going to make sure you got a good footing as you reached down. However with paths dissapearing ascending this way may have meant constantly changing your route to meet the paths.
At the base of Hells fall a 2 mile walk was left to return to the car park.

Today we take on Blencathra and sharp edge.

A quick walk across the Saddleback and we reach the summit of Blencathra, gifted with fantastic views across the lake district.
We head down the mountain via Halls Fell Ridge, described by Wainwright as 'positively the finest way to any mountain top in the district.'

Me and Cq climbing Blencathra via Sharp Edge. Came down Halls Fell Ridge and got caught in a heavy downpour. It was like scrambling on ice.

Lake District - Northern Fells - Blencathra, Bowscale fell, Bannerdale Crags and more
Our first long walk of the September 2013 trip to the Lakes. We start from the village hall in Mungrisdale and walk up to Souther Fell then on via Scales Fell to Blencathra dropping down to Mungrisdale Common. We then move on to Bannerdale Crags and finish on Bowscale Fell. We miss out on going over Sharpe Edge this trip due to very high winds. Music is by 7and5, firstly 'Footsteps' then 'See the road and walk' and finishing with 'Windchimes'. Our next walk takes in Skiddaw and finishes the Northern Fells... coming soon!
Blencathra - A Walk in the Lake District
May 17th 2015. On our holiday to the Lakes this year we didn't manage to get out as much as we would have like due to my Fybro playing up and a chest infection which had knocked me off my feet.
As we were staying in a cottage in Threlkeld it would have been rude not to go up Blencathra :)
Our walk started from the cottage, via Blease fell, a lovely walk despite the miserable weather which plagued us all week. Should have gone to Castle Rigg Stone Circle to pay our respects to the weather gods :)
