Kent State Glass Students at Blenko Glass 1994
In 1994 Rick Blenko invited me and my students to come to Blenko and blow glass there. We, of course, accepted his invitation. It was very exciting for us to blow glass at the Blenko factory. Some years prior Shorty Finley had come to the glass studio at Kent State to demonstrate his glass blowing skills to my students. To make a long story short we traveled to Milton on the Mud and spent the day blowing glass. I brought my video camera with me and recorded that exciting event. The video is unedited. As an aside, I think it was the first time a woman blew glass at Blenko. As you can see in the video the Blenko gaffers, Shorty Finley and Dave Osburn joined in and demonstrated their glass blowing skills to my students. I also documented different aspects of the factory. I hope you enjoy this historic video.

Glass from the Mountain State
On September 4, 2012, Dean Six presented Glass from the Mountain State: A Very Broad View of 200 Years. Prior to Dean's talk Jim Mitchell from the West Virginia State Museum showed some examples of glass from the museum's collection and examined glass items from audience members.
Six addressed the number and location of glass factories and types of glass produced in West Virginia since 1813. Specific factories across time and a diversity of products will be discussed, and there will be physical samples on hand to view. Six discussed the numerous towns and communities where glass was made, and he also will explore questions such as why West Virginia was a glass leader for decades and what the possible reasons were for the demise of the glass industry.
Dean Six is a native of Cairo, West Virginia. He holds multiple degrees from WVU and is employed as a glass expert for Replacements, Ltd., in Greensboro, North Carolina. He also serves as the executive director of the Museum of American Glass in West Virginia, a position he has held since 1996. Six has curated more than a dozen museum exhibits, and he has appeared in several video and television documentaries on glass. He also has been a keynote speaker at numerous national glass conventions, among them shows of Akro-Agate, Early American Pattern Glass, Fenton, Paden City, Morgantown, Tiffin, Vaseline, and Portland Rain of Glass.
Six has written more than 200 articles that have appeared in national and international periodicals including Goldenseal Magazine as well as numerous monographs. He is the author of four major books on West Virginia glass and the co-author of nine others on glass or china. His most recent book, published by Quarrier Press in 2012, is West Virginia Glass Towns.
Mason County's New Transit-Community Center
Once again Mason Transit Authority is taking the industry lead in public transportation with their first-in-the-nation Transit-Community Center. Combining a transit hub with a center devoted to community activities, events, education and youth programs, along with retail business and nonprofit services, this innovative approach includes retrofitting a defunct 1950s-era National Guard armory, and is expected to revitalize several blocks in downtown, Shelton, WA, county seat for Mason County.
