The Blennerhassett Museum of Regional History opened its doors on April 30, 1988, in response to a long-standing need to preserve, protect and exhibit the region's history. Although the Daughters of American Pioneers' log house museum in Parkersburg's City Park has preserved many artifacts since 1910, its space and visiting hours are severely limited. The next closest museum to the area is in Marietta, Ohio. The Blennerhassett Museum became the first professionally-operated, publicly-funded museum of regional history in west/central West Virginia.
The four-story brick building itself has an interesting past. The Starr Grocer Company constructed its offices and warehouses in 1902. Prospering, the company doubled the building's size in the 1920's and weathered the Great Depression, only to go out of business in the 1940's. Purchased in 1947 by the Guthrie-Morris Campbell Company of Charleston, the structure was sold by them in 1983 to the Blennerhassett Historical Park Commission, which renovated it in 1985 and1986 through a Federal EDA grant secured by Rene Zabeau.
The Blennerhassett Museum of Regional History is a showcase of three floors of priceless historical relics and objects of art from the Ohio Valley's past. Exhibits range from prehistoric Indian tools, jewelry, weapons and household items, ca. 9000 B.C., to oil paintings, old clothing, guns and military paraphernalia, furniture belonging to West Virginia's first governor, automobiles of the 19teens, farm implements, 19th-century jewelry and glassware ranging in age from 60 to 200 years old. In the 18th/early 19th century exhibit, visitors can find a burning glass, a bubby pot, some Ohio Valley's oldest manuscripts, maps, and a mourning fan ~ objects of yesteryear that now strike us with their quaintness. Blennerhassett relics are among the museum's most valuable acquisitions. The Blennerhassett Museum indeed has something for every historical interest.
Located on the corner of Second and Juliana streets, the museum is only three blocks from the Blennerhassett Hotel. Parking spaces are located off of 2nd Street, between Juliana and Ann streets, under the bridge overpass. All spaces are designated with a red M. There is a brown sign on 2nd Street that states Blennerhassett State Park & Museum Parking Only. Open year-round, the museum requires a separate admission ticket from the island. Come experience the adventure that is the Blennerhassett Museum!

Blennerhassett Island is a large island located on the Ohio River.
Great online auction find......antique paper card (I would guess from 1950's) sold on Blennerhassett Island at the museum. I doubt many of these are left still on the card. Will make a GREAT display. Under $30.00. You have not been able to hunt on this island for years (it is owned by the government). I hunted a lot near the island in the 1990's....I have probably 250 projectile points from the area. You can see why I wanted to try and get this item.....enjoy.

Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, WV
The history of Harpers Ferry has few parallels in the America drama. It is more than one event, one date, or one individual. It is multi-layered, involving a diverse number of people and events, decisions and actins that influenced the course of the United States history. Harpers Ferry witnessed the first successfel application of interchangeable parts, the arrival of the first sucessful American railroad, John Brown's attack on slavery, the largest surrender of Federal troops during the Civil War, and the education of former slaves in one of the earliest integrated schools in the united States.
Oil & Gas Museum - Parkersburg, West Virginia
The Oil & Gas Museum of Parkersburg, West Virginia offers a full range of displays and exhibits featuring the rich history of industry in the region.
Both oil and natural gas were discovered in western Virginia by the first explorers in the mid-1700s. George Washington acquired 250 acres in what is now West Virginia because it contained an oil and gas spring. This was in 1771, making the father of our country the first petroleum industry speculator.
A thriving commercial oil industry was in process as early as 1819 with the first major wells drilled at Petroleum, West Virginia, outside Parkersburg, early in 1859; California, West Virginia in the summer of 1859; and Burning Springs, West Virginia a year later in 1860. Natural gas was moved in wooden pipes from wells to be used as a manufacturing heat source by the Kanawha salt manufacturers as early as 1831. These events truly mark the beginnings of the oil and gas industry in the United States.
With oil selling for $30.00 a barrel in 1860 and natural gushers being drilled at only 100 feet, the West Virginia oil field quickly made local millionaires. The wealth of the first oil barons was used politically in bringing about statehood for West Virginia during the Civil War. Many of the founders and early politicians were oil men - governor, senator and congressman - who had made their fortunes at Burning Springs in 1860-1861.
On May 9, 1863 the important Burning Springs oil field was destroyed by Confederate raiders lead by General Jones, making it the first of many oil fields destroyed in war. After the Civil War, the industry was revived and over the next fifty years the booms spread over almost all the counties of the state. Drilling and producing of both oil and natural gas continues throughout the state to this day.
This exciting history is portrayed at the Oil & Gas Museum, and documented in a recently published book Where It All Began by David McKain and Bernard L. Allen, Ph.D.
