Blennerville Windmill in Tralee, Co. Kerry Ireland
R U in Ireland? visits the Blennerville Windmill in Tralee, Co. Kerry Ireland
I did hear about the windmill in Tralee and also the famous “Rose of Tralee” festival. This international festival is nothing short of Irish Miss Universe in my view. It is held in August of every year at Ashe Memorial Hall in Tralee, Co. Kerry. Tralee is not really famous for a lot of things otherwise. The festival is based on the love song The Rose of Tralee by William Mulchinock, a 19th-century wealthy merchant who was in love with Mary O’Connor, his maid. The first festival in 1959 had Roses representing Tralee, London, Dublin, Birmingham and New York, and cost just IR£750.

The Blennerville Windmill
Blennerville Windmill is a tower mill in Blennerville, outside Tralee Co. Kerry and the tallest of its kind in Europe at 21.3 metres high.
Blennerville Windmill was built by Sir Rowland Blennerhassett in 1800 whom the village of Blennerville is named after. The windmill was used for grinding corn for both the local population and for export to Britain. However, by the mid-late 19th century due to the introduction of steam power, the silting of the river channel at Blennerville, the opening of the Tralee Ship Canal in 1846, and the building of Fenit Harbour in 1880; the windmill fell into ruins.
In 1981 Tralee Urban District Council purchased the windmill with work beginning on restoring it in June 1984 before being completed and opened by An Taoiseach Charles Haughey in 1990.
Blennerville Windmill is now Ireland´s only commercially operated windmill in existence.

A video I took on a visit to Blennerville Windmill on Friday 13th May 2016. Blennerville windmill is located outside Tralee in County Kerry. The windmill was used for grinding corn for both the local population and for export to Britain in the early to mid 1800's. In the late 1800's it fell into ruin and was restored in the 1980's. It opened as a tourist attraction in 1900.

Narrow gauge train was operated from 1891 to 1953. Ran from Tralee along the picturesque route to Dingle. The train has been fully restored but recently loco 5 broke down. Since then the coaches show a sad appearance waiting for an new loco. When I saw the carriages I was filled with sadness. I hope that the train will run next year again and that the carriages will not be destroyed by wind and water. If someone has updates on this, I am more than happy to hear about it.
