Set in the Wicklow Mountains, the Blessington Lakes cover 500 acres water. The Lakes were formed 50 years ago by the building of the Poulaphouca Dam and hydroelectric station.

The Poulaphouca reservoir is the largest man made lake in Ireland and is a great base for various outdoor activities.

The road around the lake offers amazing views over the reservoir and the Wicklow Mountains. Drive or Cycle around the lake going through historic villages such as Valleymount, Ballyknockan or Lacken.

Walk the popular Blessington Greenway, visit nearby Russborough House and its interactive exhibition or enjoy a paddle on the lake.

The flooding of the Liffey and Kings river valley submerged 76 houses and 6500 acres of farms, four bridges that crossed the rivers, a cemetery, holy wells, bogs, etc. This video shows some of what existed before the reservoir now called Poulaphuca or the Blessington Lakes were created in 1940

Blessington Greenway

Blessington Greenway is a 'hidden gem' right on Dublin's doorstep. This stunning trail links the historic town of Blessington with the Palladian mansion of Russborough House.

It covers a breathtakingly beautiful 6.5kms along the shores and through the forests adjacent to Blessington Lakes - ideal for a leisurely stroll or cycle. And plans are being prepared for the addition of a complete loop right around the lakes of more than 40kms.
