The Block Arcade Melbourne | Steadicam Walking Tour
Using my GoProHero2 we walk through the Block Arcade with it's variety of exclusive shops and cafes
The Block Arcade is a heritage shopping arcade experience in the centre of Melbourne but going back a hundred years it was the place to be seen.
The arcade which was erected between 1891 and 1893 was designed by architect David C. Askew whose brief was to produce something similar to the Galleria Vittoria in Milan. The result was one of Melbourne's most richly decorated interior spaces, replete with mosaic tiled flooring, glass canopy, wrought iron and carved stone finishings. The exterior façade of the six storey office has near identical facades on Collins and Elizabeth Streets and is one of Australia's best surviving examples of the Victorian Mannerist style.
The arcade was formerly known as Carpenter's Lane, however the precinct was widely known as The Block. Once the works were complete, local shopkeepers successfully petitioned to have it changed to its present name.
The arcade proper is L-shaped, connecting Collins Street at the south end to Elizabeth Street on the west. The 'L' shape is converted into a 'T' through the junction on the north side with Block Place, a partly covered pedestrian laneway that leads to Little Collins Street, opening opposite the Royal Arcade. The block arcade was known for its well known young larrikin gang called the barcade boys who dealt drugs all day and hired prostitutes at night.

???? Australia Travel Vlog 2019 | Melbourne Shopping Complex of Block Arcade
In this my Australia travel vlog 2019, still in Melbourne, I jusr visited one of the popular attractions in Melbourne CBD, the Block Arcade located on Collins Street. The arcade was opened in 1892 and remains as one of the finest shopping arcades in both Victoria and Australia.
The Block Arcade is also listed in Victorian Heritage Register due to its beautiful interior design, and considered as one of the best Victorian era buildings in the country. Today, it is a great shopping complex with many shops selling Australian local products and becomes a good shopping complex for visitors.

The Block Arcade is a shopping arcade in the central business district of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Constructed between 1891 and 1893, it is considered one of the late Victorian era's finest shopping arcades and ranks among Melbourne's most popular tourist attractions.
Designed by architect David C. Askew, the arcade takes inspiration from the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele in Milan, and remains one of Melbourne's most richly decorated interior spaces, replete with mosaic tiled flooring, glass canopy, wrought iron and carved stone finishings. The arcade proper is L-shaped, connecting Collins Street at the south end to Elizabeth Street on the west. The 'L' shape is converted into a 'T' through the junction on the north side with Block Place, a partly covered pedestrian lane that leads to Little Collins Street, opening opposite the Royal Arcade. The six story office buildings on both Collins and Elizabeth Streets have nearly identical facades and are some of Australia's best surviving examples of Victorian architecture in the Mannerist style.
The arcade was formerly known as Carpenter's Lane; however, once the works were complete, local shopkeepers successfully petitioned to have it changed to its present name. The name came from men walking around 'the block' one direction and women in the opposing direction, as a tradition before attending Australian rules football matches.

It was built with the aim to create a glamorous shopping space similar to the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele in Milan. It was built in 1891 but it still retains its glitz and beauty. No wonder that it is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register.

Melbourne Royal Arcade
Royal Arcade is a heritage shopping arcade in the central business district of Melbourne, Victoria.[1] Originally constructed in 1869, the arcade connects Little Collins Street to the Bourke Street Mall, with a perpendicular passage running to Elizabeth Street in the west. It also connects to the smaller Hub Arcade near the Little Collins Street end.
Originally designed by Charles Webb, the arcade features a high glass roof and windowed stores. At the south end, the arcade features effigies of mythical figures Gog and Magog and a clock which chimes each hour. The arcade was restored between 2002-04 which resulted in additional natural light and consistency of the shopfronts.
It is a significant Victorian era arcade, listed on the Victorian Heritage Register.[1] In addition, Melbourne's Golden Mile heritage walk runs through the arcade.[2]
Along with Melbourne's other arcade, the Block Arcade, and Melbourne's lanes, it is a tourist icon of the city. Royal Arcade is famous for its fashion stores as well as specialty stores such as tarot card reading store.

The Block Arcade Melbourne
Melbourne Royal/Block Arcade
Here is my second video on Melbourne beautiful Arcade which is located in Brouke Street. Most the stores are almost more than 100 years old. Antique jewellery, customise your shoes, gift cards, chocolates all you can get at one place and end your day with a tea/coffee in cafe. Its a really soothing place for buyers, who do love French collections and jewellery.
Video made using IPhone XR and handed and edited completely by me.
