Taichung Ice Cream Shop | I'm Talato | What to do in Taiwan |
I'm Talato 我是塔拉朵
Rating: 4/5
Addy: No. 451, Yingcai Rd, West District
Taichung City, Taiwan 403
Hours: 11.30am - 7.30pm
Weekdays are fine, but during weekends you will need to queue about an hour to get in.
The ice cream is surprising good - in particular the chococate, green tea and black sesame flavours.
Diving in a pool of huge ice cream is more fun than I expected (lol) and there are numerous selfie opportunities there.
I actually stayed across the road at The Landis (awesome hotel), there's a lot to do nearby with The Taichung Civic Square, CMP Block Museum of Arts, the famous 1988 dumpling shop, pork knuckle shop, and noodle shop - all within walking distance (will have a feature video on this).

Kaohsiung's Cijin District Area (Slideshow) / 高雄市 / たかおし
The Cijin District (旗津) is a slender island in Kaohsiung harbor which serves as a natural breakwater for the harbour. The district is filled with seafood restaurants selling freshly caught seafood which can be prepared right after you pick it out. Cijin is connected to the rest of Kaohsiung / 高雄市 / たかおし by underwater tunnels, but the transportation of choice is one of the many ferries that traverse the harbour. Fare for the ferry ride from the Gushan Ferry Pier Station / 鼓山輪渡站 is now NT$40 per person. The street that goes straight from the Cijin Ferry Station / 旗津輪渡站 has about two blocks of snack stands, as well as seafood restaurants near the end.
TianHou Temple (currently under restoration) on the street was built about three hundred years ago (regarded as the oldest temple in Kaohsiung), and dedicated to the Goddess of Sailors, Matzu. People believe that Matzu can protect every fisherman who put out to sea.
Cijin Coast Park (Cijin Seaside park), No.990 Qijin Third Road, Qijin District, Kaohsiung, Taiwan. The Cijin Seaside Park is a long area of picturesque terrain along the west coast of Cijin Island. Take a leisurely stroll past intriguing architectural designs with a constant view of the Taiwan Strait. The park incorporates a long path for walking and cycling as well as an ecological area and Cijin Beach.
ChiHou Lighthouse, #34, Chi-Xia Lane, Chi-Jin District.. The lighthouse was built by English technicians in Ching Dynasty (1883). In 1916, the Japanese remodeled it into Baroque stye and painted it white. This renovation was made as part of the expasion of Dagao port. The lighthouse has played a crucial role in guiding ships since 1918 during night sailing.
Chihou Fort, #34, Chi-Xia Lane, Chi-Jin District.. Chihou Fort is a battery which was designed by English engineer. It was after the Cing (Qing) government took over Taiwan that the fort became a military base. The fort stationed a naval commander and one hundred soldiers. The battery was also armored with four British-made Armstrong breecholders weighing 6.5 tons each. The fort was occupied by the Japanese army in 1895. Subsequently, the cannons in the fort were dismantled and melted. Meanwhile the battery was abandoned. In 1988, Kaohsiung city government started to restore the battery and it was completed in 1992. As a result, a new Cihou battery was reborn to please the tourists.

Taiwan Presidential Office Building Tour / 總統府 (旅游)
The Presidential Office Building / 總統府 / 中華民國總統府 / 中华民国总统府 houses the Office of the President of the Republic of China. The building, located in the Zhongzheng District in the national capital of Taipei, Taiwan, was designed by architect Uheiji Nagano (ja) during the period of Japanese rule of Taiwan (1895–1945). The structure originally housed the Office of the Governor-General of Taiwan. Damaged in Allied bombing during World War II, the building was restored after the war by Chen Yi, the Governor-General of Taiwan Province. It became the Presidential Office in 1950 after the Republic of China lost control of mainland China and relocated the nation's capital to Taipei at the end of the Chinese Civil War. At present, this Baroque-style building is a symbol of the ROC Government and a famous historical landmark in downtown Taipei.
The Presidential Office Building occupies the city block between Chongqing South Road and Bo'ai Road in downtown Taipei. It is designed in the shape of two squares stretching from Baoqing Road to Guiyang Street.
The 130 meter-wide facade faces east down multi-lane Ketagalan Boulevard. This reflects the concerns of its Japanese architects, who often oriented important structures toward the rising sun at the head of long avenues. (This feature may also be seen in Main Library of National Taiwan University.)
The building has ten entrances but only the front entrance and west gate are used for official functions. In the original design an ornate Baroque-style domed entrance hall greeted visiting dignitaries. This entrance hall was reconstructed with simpler interior features after destruction of the first hall in World War 2. The west gate, the formal rear entrance of the building, features a grand marble staircase and porch lined with Ionic and Corinthian pillars.
The two-part main building, six stories high, mainly houses government offices and maintenance services. The office wings feature balconies and long corridor that allow view of the sunlit North and South Gardens.
The 60-meter tower at the center of the building was the tallest structure in the Taipei Basin during Japanese rule. When the Nationalist regime took power, a platform was built at the top floor to enable martial flag-raising ceremonies.
The Presidential Office Building stands within walking distance of the Judicial Yuan Building, 228 Memorial Park, the National Taiwan Museum, the original hospital of the National Taiwan University, the original East Gate of the City of Taipei, the Chang Yung Fa Foundation Building (formerly Kuomintang Party Headquarters) and the National Theater and Concert Hall at Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall. A few blocks to the west is Taipei's popular Ximending shopping district with its historic cinema and Jhongshan Concert Hall. A few blocks to the north is Taipei Main Station and Shin Kong Life Tower.
Full open house days are once a month (usually on a Saturday - Check the website for a full schedule: Otherwise, the Presidential Office Building is partially open on weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. (Visitors should enter the building before 11:30 a.m.).

Pinglin Village
The bulk of Pinglin Village lies along a one-kilometer stretch of Highway 9, running parallel to the Beishi River. Most of the shops on either side of the highway are devoted to hawking the area’s mainstay product: Baozhong tea. If you are in the market for a cup of tea, local vendors are more than happy to brew up samples of Baozhong and other varieties. Local restaurants serve up all manner of innovative tea-theme dishes, including chicken fried in tea oil, tea-flavored vermicelli, tea eggs, tea jelly, deep-fried tea leaves, and tea-flavored ice cream.
Qinshui Suspension Bridge
On the main highway back at the western end of the village, next to a large welcome gate, cross a small parking lot to find the 60-meter-long Qinshui Suspension Bridge, which, along with the viewing platforms on either side of it, provides visitors with an ideal vantage point for observing the high concentration of fish (in certain spots as many as 50 per cubic meter, according to one study) in the crystal-clear water of the Beishi River below. The river is divided by cement blocks into sections of calm water, enabling you to easily spot the fish.
Cycling the Fish Observation Path
The Fish Observation Path, which starts at Qinshui Suspension Bridge, is best enjoyed on two wheels. Bicycles can be rented in the village. After crossing Qinshui Suspension Bridge from the highway side, turn right and ride along the path as it follows the Beishi River downstream. Look closely and you’ll be able to see lanky egrets perched on stones along the riverbanks, preying on the abundance of fish in the water. The path soon curves to the left, and you’ll be rewarded with a commanding view over a field with rows upon rows of tea shrubs.
After crossing a small bridge, you’ll have the choice of turning right for the start of a 40-minute ride along Jingualiao Stream, or left for a shorter ride further along the Fish Observation Path as it follows a tributary, Daiyujue Creek, upstream. Choosing the latter, the further you get from the village the more idyllic the scenery becomes, with elderly farmers in conical hats tending to their tea fields on one side and turquoise pools of creek water begging to be jumped into on the other.
Pinglin Tea Museum
Back in the village, don’t miss to visit the recently renovated Pinglin Tea Museum. Built in 1997, it is an elegant white-walled facility (admission free). To get to it from the Old Street area, cross the Old Pinglin Bridge and turn left. Passing through the entrance gate brings you into a Fujian-style courtyard. To the right is a multimedia hall, where you can see (and smell) 25+ varieties of tea grown in northern Taiwan, learn how to wrap Baozhong tea in its signature square packages, and observe machinery used for separating and roasting tea leaves.
In the Exhibition Hall opposite the main entrance, learn everything you ever wanted to know about Pinglin and the history of Baozhong. Interactive exhibits cover traditional tea-picking clothing for men and women, information about the different tea-producing regions of New Taipei City, and much else, and also give you the chance to take a photo with your own face placed in an old-time Formosa tea advertisement. To the left of the courtyard, you’ll find a souvenir shop selling fine teas, tea soap, ceramic teaware, and other items, and past that you can ascend a flight of stairs to a calm south China-style garden. A small teashop on the outer wall of the museum just outside the entrance serves freshly brewed hot and cold tea to go. You’ll surely want to savor a cup when leaving the museum, now that you are an expert on the subject!

From Travel in Taiwan magazine 2018-5-6:
Tainan Judicial Museum
The Tainan Judicial Museum (No. 307, Sec. 1, Fuqian Rd., West Central Dist.; judicial.gov.tw/museum/; Chinese) complex, inaugurated as the Taiwan District Court in 1914, is considered one of Taiwan’s three supreme Japanese-era works of architecture.
Blueprint Culture and Creative Park
This is a narrow-lane complex of renovated simple, cement-walled dormitories originally built by the Japanese to house judicial-authority employees. The dorm buildings are today home to an attractive cluster of artisanal outlets and creative eateries.
Little Secret
The “hidden-away” Little Secret (No. 17, Ln. 689, Sec. 1, Ximen Rd., South Dist.; facebook.com/littlesecret17) restaurant is the go-to foodie haunt here. The emphasis is on bringing cultural-creative flourishes to familiar Taiwanese noodle classics, each dish celebrating a regional icon ingredient.
Old Taiwan Magistrate Residence
The Old Taiwan Magistrate Residence (No. 1, Weimin Street, East Dist.; otmr.com.tw), built in 1900, was used as a residence by visiting Japanese royals, most notably the future Emperor Hirohito during his 1923 grand Taiwan inspection.
The Place Tainan
This new boutique hotel is situated at one end of a monstrous block-style retail/entertainment/leisure complex. The contemporary-décor hotel has minimalist-theme guestrooms with strong black and white schemes. hotelroyal.com.tw/tainan
Lin Mo-Niang Park
Overlooking the south side of Anping Harbor is a giant 16m-high hilltop statue of Lin Mo-Niang located in the breezy Lin Mo-Niang Park. Lin was the young mortal maiden who became the immortal Mazu, Goddess of the Sea, protector of seafarers.
Eternal Golden Castle
This “castle,” actually a fort (No. 3, Guangzhou Rd., Anping Dist.), was built by the Chinese in the 1870s as protection against grasping colonial powers. Massive bastions are found at the ends of the four high, thick walls, with a moat making enemy access even more difficult.
Taijiang National Park Visitor Center
Taijiang National Park (tjnp.gov.tw) is a watery world of estuaries, sandbars, tidal flats, old irrigation canals and small-craft shipping channels, mangrove swamps, wetlands, and aquaculture farms. The white-walled buildings of the visitor complex, built on stilts above retired fish farms, resemble traditional fishermen dwellings and circle a faux “lagoon.”
Anping Fort
This stronghold, originally called Fort Zeelandia, was built at the north-end head of a great sometimes sandbar/sometimes silt island (at high tide) that jutted out from the mainland.
Anping Tree House
Old Tait & Company Merchant House (No. 108, Gubao St., Anping Dist.) and, directly behind, the Anping Tree House, were both built by a British trading firm after the Second Opium War forced China to open ports to Western trade in 1858. The treehouse, originally conjoined warehouses, has been completely overrun by massive banyan trees, creating a fairytale maze.
Chou’s Shrimp Rolls
This restaurant (No. 125 Anping Street, Anping Dist.) is one of the best restaurants in Anping serving shrimp rolls, a local the delicacy.
Jingzaijiao Tile-paved Salt Fields
Just south of the fishing village of Beimen are the Jingzaijiao Tile-paved Salt Fields, Taiwan’s oldest salt fields, created in 1818. This site is a showcase example of how the bottom of evaporation ponds were paved with pottery shards, producing cleaner salt and making harvesting easier.
Taiwan landmark featured
Taiwan's famous National Palace Museum covered in ice? Not exactly. This is actually an ice sculpture of the museum.
The sculpture was one of several world famous landmarks featured at the annual Sapporo Snow Festival in northern Japan.
The World's Largest Abandoned City - Ordos
Ordos The World’s Largest Abandoned City
The development of the city of Ordos is a unique tale. Ordos is a city designed from scratch and built within 10 years. This city came to fruition after private mining companies were given the rights to dig into deposits in the late 90’s and 2000’s. This generated a lot of tax revenue making Ordos the 2nd highest income per capita city in China. Ordos is a city located in Inner Mongolia that has been constantly been burdened with water shortage issues. Instead of trying to revamp the current infrastructure the Chinese government decided to rebuild the city from scratch which is called “New Ordos” just 16 miles or 25 km kilometers away from the existing city now called “Old Ordos”. The people of Old Ordos refer to New Ordos as the Kangbashi district of Ordos, these new and old labels are basically not supported by anyone locally. Two villages built around the Wulan Mulan River were demolished and construction started in 2005. 161 billion dollars in infrastructure was invested to build the Kangbashi District over the first 5 years. Regardless if anyone lives in this new city, this is a major plus to the government of China as it increases China’s GDP. The government gave kickbacks to developers who helped boost GDP so building anything anywhere is promoted.
The old city of Ordos or Dongsheng is home to over ½ a million people, it was expected that many of them would move to the new city as it became completed. As explained by many locals, a working couple only makes $800 a month combined of which ⅓ is taken for rent. The new apartments in New Ordos sell for 70 - 100 thousand dollars making it virtually impossible for locals to live there. Sales were slow at first but eventually investors snapped up many of the units in the new city. This has left New Ordos with a ton of infrastructure and no residents. The city was originally designed to hold 1 million people but was scaled down during construction to 500,000 then to 300,000 after coal prices crashed.
The city features a 5 story shopping mall, impressive monuments and statues, art and city museum, the Ordos Dongsheng Stadium that seats 35,000 people, opera house, a brand new airport and a modern designed mosque. The city streets are lined with skyscraper after skyscraper that are almost completely empty. A toy store is one of the only stores in the massive 5 story mall, the man who runs the store says he sells something every few days and if the government doesn’t step in soon to fix it, he may have to move back to Dongsheng. It is estimated only 2 % of the buildings were ever filled the rest remain abandoned. Outside the mall an elaborate water show is put on every night with only a few people found to be watching it. A water show this size in a normal city would draw thousands of viewers daily. The city has everything it needs to be a great thriving new city like extra wide roads with bike lanes like what is found in Taipei, modern amenities and infrastructure but simply no people. The initial wave of 30,000 people that moved to New Ordos all lived in a 4 to 5 block radius just north of central park. A few years later that grew to 60,000 and now 12 years after the start of construction there are around 150,000 residents in a city that was originally designed for 1 million. The city has been doing many things to attract people to live there like moving the best schools from Dongsheng to Kangbashi. While some areas of Kangbashi aren’t a ghost town at all today, many still are. One abandoned project is the Ordos 100 Project, which is a project that was to have 100 different extreme luxury villas designed. Instead of the government doing it themselves they invited 100 different architects from around the world to each design a luxury villas to be placed on the map. Land sections were given out with the utmost creative freedom except the design was not to look like traditional Mongolian designs such as Yurts. Each architect designed their villa and construction started. Within the Ordos 100 Project site multiple half finished villas can be found. While many lay half finished some have progress going forward.

TAIPEI // TAIWAN 2016: TAIPEI 101 TOWER - 台北101觀景台
Taipei 101 is an engineering marvel and the first building of its kind in the world. Spanning 101 stories above the ground at 508 metres, the building was designed as a symbol of technology's evolution fused with Asian tradition. The building features many pan-Chinese and Asian elements mixed with a postmodern style, and is designed to withstand typhoons and earthquakes common in Taiwan.
Besides the tower, the base of the building houses a multi-level shopping mall, food court, various restaurants and stores (including Din Tai Fung 鼎泰豐), and an international grocery store.
The double-deck elevators installed in Taipei 101 set a record in 2004 by traveling 60.6 km/h, lifting visitors to the observation deck at the top in only 37 seconds. The ticket price for the observatory is NT$500, but can be reserved online with our partner Klook for only NT$440! Benefits of reserving the ticket online include a discount and not having to wait in the long line to purchase the ticket.
Take a trip to the top of 101 by purchasing a ticket inside the mall for NT$500, granting access to the observation deck and museum where visitors can learn about this technical and architectural wonder, as well as get a first-hand look at the tuned mass damper located at the core of the tower that keeps the building from swaying. It's a fascinating piece of technology, and visitors are allowed to view up close.
Hachinohe line in 2005, Semaphores and Tokens
Hachinohe line is one of the local service of East Japan Railway Company(JR-East), which is in the north part of Honshu island, along the pacific ocean. Footages in this movie were taken in around 2005. At that time, there were some semaphores, and token systems were still in use for the single track operation. In 2011, this line was severely damaged by Higashi-Nihon great earthquake, also considerable part of railways were washed out by the great tsunami. The service was resumed after one year intensive recovery. Now railcars, and railway operations were modernized, we can't see semaphores and tokens no more.
