Places to see in ( Blois - France ) Blois Cathedral
The Cathedral of St. Louis of Blois, commonly referred to as Blois Cathedral is a Late Gothic Roman Catholic cathedral in Blois, France. It has been a monument historique since 1906. It is the seat of the Bishopric of Blois, established in 1697. The cathedral is in the Late Gothic style. Before becoming a cathedral, the building was a collegiate church dedicated to Saint Solenne.
Construction began in the 12th century. However, except for traces in the crypt and in the base of the bell-tower, nothing is left of the original structure. Construction on the current facade and bell-tower was begun in 1544. The nave was destroyed in a 1678 storm, and the reconstruction in Gothic style took place between 1680 and 1700 under the direction of the architect Arnoult-Séraphin Poictevin (d. 1720). This project was begun at the instigation of Jean-Baptiste Colbert, whose wife was a native of Blois. To celebrate the church's elevation to cathedral status in 1697, Louis XIV presented the organ console in 1704. The new see thereupon took the dedication to Saint Louis. The Chapel of Notre-Dame was added in 1860, under the direction of Jules de La Morandière.
American bombardment during World War II destroyed most of the glass-work in the cathedral. On December 22, 2000, new stained-glass windows were dedicated, the work of the Dutch artist Jan Dibbets and the French master glass-worker Jean Mauret. This work was done as part of a general restoration project begun in 1985. The new windows cover thirty-three bays, upper and lower, and have a combined surface area of over 360m22.
The current facade, dating from the middle of the 16th century, represents a compromise between the Late Gothic and early Neoclassical styles. Represented are such medieval elements as gargoyles, pinnacled buttresses, and a pointed gable. The Neoclassical elements include the triangular pediment and the medallions in the round found in the spandrels. The cathedral consists of a long nave with side aisles running along the north and south. Side chapels open onto the aisles. There is also a chancel with its ambulatory. There is no transept.
The chancel has a pentagonal apse from the 16th and 17th centuries. Surrounding the chancel is the ambulatory with its apsidal chapels dating from the 19th century. The upper windows retain their stained glass from the 19th century artist Lobin. The ambulatory, which was not added until the 1860s, displays twisted pillars in a pastiche of the Louis XII style, an example of the architectural imitation that was common during the Second Empire.

Blois Chateau, Loire, France travel video
The French city of Blois in the Loire Valley has one of the largest and most interesting of the châteaux of the Loire Valley, built up in a variety of architectural styles over its 700 year period. It was home to many of the kings and queens of France. And there is also a very friendly pedestrian center to the town.
Because so many powerful kings lived here and were associated with the château, it was built up over the centuries in a variety of architectural styles. This one building exhibits the medieval and the Renaissance and then the French classic style later of François Mansart.
The historic center is 800 meters wide, very easy to walk around in. The ancient Old Town is built upon a steep slope, crowned by the historical castle at one end of the ridge, and by the cathedral at the other. As a result there are numerous staircase streets running up the hills.
The old part of town next to the château is a healthy and vibrant neighborhood with shops and cafés scattered and residences in the blocks behind.
The main street of the Old Town is rue Saint-Lubin which leads right into the major square, Place Louis XII.

Blois, a hillside city on the Loire River, is the capital of the Loir-et-Cher department in central France. The late-Gothic Blois Cathedral towers over its cobbled center. Nearby, the Château Royal de Blois is a former royal palace with ornate chambers, and paintings and sculptures from the 16th to 19th centuries. Opposite, La Maison de la Magie Robert-Houdin explores the history of magic and holds live performances.
Towering above the northern bank of the Loire, Blois’ royal château, one-time feudal seat of the powerful counts of Blois, offers a great introduction to some key periods in French history and architecture. The city makes an excellent base for visits to the châteaux, villages and towns of the central Loire Valley. Blois attracts many visitors because of the popular Chateau de Blois that is situated in the town, but Blois is also a very pretty town with plenty of historical sights to see and also a vibrant centre. It makes a very good base for visiting the castles of the Loire valley.
The Chateau de Bois sits at the top of the town on the edge of a large square. From this side it looks like a large manor house with its brick and stone facade. Above the entrance is a statue of King Louis XII mounted on a horse. The chateau has many interesting rooms to visit and its internal courtyard reflects 4 different periods of history in its architecture. The square in front of the castle was once part of the castle and was surrounded by walls and contained stables, armouries and religious buildings. During King Louis XII the castle lost its military focus and various mansions were built around the square for those closest to the King.
The building that is now the Maison de la Magie opposite the castle entrance was built in the 19th century and the area became a public square following the bombing of the city in 1940. The Maison de la Magie is now a museum dedicated to magic and the art of illusion. It contains many objects that belonged to Houdini and his life and work are a major part of the exhibition. There is also a show created by Ferard Majax called the Hallucinoscope.
Below the castle is a lively old town with narrow streets and ancient buildings. Blois was in its heyday as a royal town in the 16th century and much of its architecture reflects this period though there are also buildings dating to the 12th century. The ancient town includes many late Gothic and Renaissance palaces such as the palace of the Archbishop, surrounded by terraced gardens close to the Loire.
On the eastern side of town is the Cathedral of Saint Louis, dating from the tenth century, and in Gothic style. Inside it has magnificent windows which were created by a Dutch artist Jan Dibbets in 1992. Opposite the cathedral, the ‘Maison des Acrobates’, dates from the fifteenth century. Behind the cathedral is the town hall and Bishop's garden. The Fondation du Doute is an interesting building which is a Contemporary Art Centre based around the ideas of the Fluxus Group. Conceived by the artist Ben, there are works by various artists including Duschamp, Dali and Man Ray. The Café Le Fluxus is a great place for a coffee or bistro lunch. It certainly makes quite a change to castle visiting in the area.
Blois has several very nice gardens. The Bishop's garden (Jardin de l'Eveche) behind the cathedral has some wonderful views over the Loire as well as a lovely rosary. Near to the chateau the Jardins du Roy are a beautiful contemporary garden with box hedges cut in lines and waves and interplanted with roses in a very original way. Other areas include ponds and fountains and more contemporary style planting.

Blois is only 60km from Tours and still in the heart of Chateau country. As we didn't have the means to visit the various chateaux of the area we headed to the Chateau of Chateaux, the Royal Chateau of Blois. This place gives a crash course in Chateau architecture and history. It was built in four stages. It was a medieval fortress in the 13th century (Gothic), then Louis XII built a wing around 1500 (Flamboyant), Francois I got into it with his wing 20 years later (Renaissance) and Gaston d'Orleans finished it off 100 years later (Classical). A fascinating view from inside the courtyard looking around at what was in at each stage of construction. The interior didn't disappoint either. The Gothic wing houses the Hall of the Estates General, a gorgeous structure where you can imagine grand galas taking place. The Flamboyant wing is home to the fine arts museum, the Classical wing with a remarkable foyer holds seasonal exibitions, and finally, the Renaissance wing shows off more fine art as well as the royal apartments. In the King's bedroom Henri III had his rival, the Duke of Guise assassinated in 1588. Each evening they put on a sound a light show in the courtyard that tells of some of the rich history that the Chateau has seen over the last 1000 years. We were lucky enough to go on English night so we could obviously understand the commentary in full. See the pictures for some shots of all the above. Blois is also home to the Museum of Magic. It is in tribute to the Grand Master of magic. Not Harry Houdini (Erich Weis), but Blois native Robert Houdin, the father of modern magic and Houdini's inspiration. The Museum of Magic is certainly enchanting. The building itself is gorgeous and at the top of each hour it acts as a type of cuckoo-clock. Instead of a bird appearing, massive golden dragons pop out of the windows with a roar (see picture). Inside they have a hall of illusions, a corridor of mystery, as well as tribute halls to both the master Robert Houdin and Harry Houdini. On the top floor, they even have a Hallucinoscope. Here you wear a special visor and it looks like you are walking through an underwater world even though you are simply walking through an empty room (all the action is on the ceiling and your view is reflected up). At the end of the museum tour, they have a half-hour magic show performed by two magicians and is quite entertaining. The whole experience was a nice surprise considering where we were and what we expected from Blois. Off to Orleans!

On 04/30/2019, the St. Michael Choir (Sharonville, OH) performed the first concert of our trip through France. The concert was organized by the France-United States Association (Association France-Etats-unis), and the venue was the beautiful Chateau Royal de Blois. The turnout exceeded expectations! (We had to add chairs!) The accoustics of the beautiful room and the graceous welcome from our audience was a blessing that we'll long remember.

Blois Cathedral, France Sunset Time Lapse - May 6, 2016
Sunset of the Blois Cathedral from the bridge that crosses the Loire River. The setting sun is on the same side as the cathedral but a lot further to the left of the scene. There were some good clouds that evening, and the color changes can be seen reflecting off of them. Also with the river in the scene, the reflection of the buildings as well as the clouds is mirrored.
As dusk approaches, the lights of the city turn on. It is interesting to see how the cathedral lights change from a greenish hue to yellow as they warm up. With the city street in the center of the scene, there is also some action from the traffic.
The video was shot with an iPhone 5se using Lapse It.

Blois France
The Royal Château de Blois is located in the Loir-et-Cher département in the Loire Valley, in France. The residence of several French kings, it is also the place where Joan of Arc went in 1429 to be blessed by the Archbishop of Reims before departing with her army to drive the English from Orléans.
Built in the middle of the town that it effectively controlled, the château of Blois comprises several buildings constructed from the 13th to the 17th century around the main courtyard. Its most famous piece of architecture is the magnificent spiral staircase in the François I wing.
