Just another day at BRUNSWICK HEADS, NSW, AUSTRALIA. I was invited to be a 'DECKHAND' on the BLUE BAY WARRIOR, our local whale watching boat. Took my camera and caught some footage of mother whales and their babies. bluebaywhalewatching.com.au will get you there.
Blue Bay Divers Byron Bay
Video footage was obtained from the mighty Bay Warrior. During the annual whale migration thousands of Humpback Whales will travel up the east coast of Australia, just about all going back to Antarctica at this time, book in next season with the BLUE BAY DIVERS, Byron Bay and Brunswick Heads.
BLUE BAY DIVERS WHALES.wmv
The return of the humpback whales to Antarctica is nearly over for this year. This video is showing a mother whale and her (big) baby 'fin lobbing' outrageously. They hovered around the good ship Bay Warrior for over an hour, sometimes sounding under the boat and surfacing close by. Byron Bay and Brunswick Heads is the place to come and see these wonderfull mammals, come and visit next year.

Byron Bay Humpback Whale Watching
While in Byron Bay we had the opportunity to see a couple of humpback whales a few miles out from Brunswick Heads (15km's north of Byron).
We went out with Blue Bay Divers. The charter vessel is set up for divers and whale watchers. It was comfortable for up to 10 to 12 people, fast with twin 250hp outboards and as soon as we exited the Bar we saw our first glimpse of Humpbacks just a mile or so off shore.
Over the next 3 hours we saw about 6 whales but the first encounter was definitely the best. The whales were displaying themselves on the surface with several full breaches (too far away to photograph) and as we got closer, they were pectoral fin slapping and tail slapping. Our daughter Jemima said she was eye-balled by a large whale as it swam along side the bow of the boat.
I must admit I have had better interaction with whales at Harvey Bay north of Brisbane but for $85.00 for a 3-hour tour from just north of Byron Bay, it was a great deal and we had a wonderful adventure.
I didn't have my normal dSLR camera so the photos and video are from my GoPro2 and Canon S90 with it's simple 4x zoom. Still the footage shows you what we experienced and hopefully next time I'll have the big zoom lens on my Nikon D600.
The guy photographing on the boat was Keith Christie, a local fella and keen photographer who has some lovely whale images.
Enjoy watching, Dave.

Humpback whale watching in Mooloolaba, Sunshine Coast, Australia
I took a tour to watch humpback whales with my brother while visiting him in Sunshine Coast, Australia. He lives very close to Mooloolaba which is where the starting point of the tour. It is a 3-hour tour that ferried us from point to point in search of whales.
Although we caught one whale doing the head lunge (jumping out of the water), I did not capture it since I was not ready with my camera phone. We did spot quite a number of them blowing water and swimming in pairs or in a pod. So cool.
