Phnom Penh to Ho Chi Minh City by Bus
7 March 2011 - We take a bus in the morning from Orussey Market in Phnom Penh, Cambodia and then travel across the border to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Along the way we cross a river via boat and stopped off at a cafe where there was a talking bird. After crossing the border into Vietnam, we observed the suddenly fertile rice fields of Vietnam, and noticed that Vietnamese roads are crowded with motorbikes, moreso than in Cambodia.
We did a lot more at Ho Chi Minh City than this video suggests. We went to see a number of sights, such as some church and some train station where I noticed they had a Commonwealth Bank ATM. We went to HCMC's Reunification Palace, which used to be called Norodom Palace back in the old days when both Cambodia and Vietnam was called French Indochina.
After all the sightseeing, it was dark and all of us were ready to go to our hotel and sleep, but we still had one place to go to, which was dinner on a cruise ship along the Mekong. This dinner turned out to be one of the most memorable parts of the trip. It wasn't the food that was memorable. In fact, the food was average. But there were a number of interesting performers on stage. One such memorable performance was from a young Vietnamese woman who danced on stage in blue bikinis while twirling and swallowing flaming torches. The night was all the more interesting because among the people eating there was a South Korean general and a group of his friends. This South Korean general sang songs and danced like he was in his twenties.
