Lepreau Inlet - Tidal Race Practice
After completing the Paddle Canada Level 2 Sea Kayak Skills course I head to one of the many local tide races to practice what I learned.
Kayaking the Matawin Abandoned Cabin Dam and Birds
Booked off work and went kayaking! Nice day, drove up to the Matawin river behind Shabaqua Ontario and launched above the old dam there! Explored an old Abandoned Cabin, saw a Trumpeter Swan for the first time in my life and lots of birds! Awesome day!
toronto to lake huron
Some impressions from my bike and canoe trip from Toronto to Caseville (Michigan).
It is not possible to bike the border over the blue water bridge at Sarnia. The bridge operator gives cyclists a lift over the bridge on demand, but recommends to take the 35km detour via Sombra-Marine City and take the ferry there. In Port Austin i changed the Transportation method and canoed a couple days along the shore of the Huron Lake.

Be Your Own South Shore Connector - LaHave Islands
Our first local South Shore Connectors discovered Cape LaHave Island. Kudos to Lake and Melissa Mertens for challenging themselves with a tough kayak paddle. That white sand beach is definitely a great reward! Here's what they had to say about it:
My husband, our dog and I are always looking for something new or another adventure to go on in Nova Scotia. Having lived here for quite a while, exploring islands is definitely one of our favorite parts of Nova Scotia, but we had mostly only ventured throughout the Chester Islands. We decided to try something new last week and we found information about kayaking around the LaHave Islands on southshoreconnect.ca.
On a whim we went and packed up our stuff and roughly planned a two night kayak trip in the LaHave Islands. You can see the actual route we traveled in our video. We planned to paddle all the way around Mosher's Island, but were forced to turn around because of massive swells at the point. This was a very long detour in our first day and we were very tired already as we had to paddle back against very strong winds. The trip had already almost seemed like a lost cause. We decided we would push through our exhaustion and try to salvage the trip and hid in through the inner islands towards the backside of Cape Bay Beach. With the wind coming from the north this was still a very wet, windy, and tiring paddle.
No matter how tired we were we still could not help but admire the amazing scenery and wildlife all around. On our paddle we saw deer on the shore of the islands and seals swimming nearby. We eventually made it to the backside of the beach, only to see the massive grass covered dunes, hoping we had paddled to the right spot. We had to drag our kayak quite far up the grassland behind the bay to make sure it was safe from the tide.
This extremely tiring day was all worth it though once we climbed up the back of the dunes and saw what was on the other side, and heard the crashing waves. The beach was magnificent and completely white and stretched very far, with not a single person on it. It was surreal to walk over that hill and the video doesn't do it justice. That was definitely the highlight of our trip and is the reason why this was one of our favorite Nova Scotia adventures. We spent the night on the beach, and woke up to the thundering of the waves. We spent most of the next morning exploring the beach, just taking in the amazing views and resting our sore arms.
It was hard to leave such a beautiful spot but we pulled our kayak back to the water and paddled back to Mosher's Island to set up camp. It was a tiring but amazing trip and I would recommend to anyone who has not explored the LaHave Islands to go and have their own adventure there.

Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | Wausau (#308)
[Latest Airdate: June 29, 2017]
[Original Airdate: February 27, 2014]
Wausau is our first half-and-half community -- we shot half of the episode in the winter when it was zero degrees, and the other half in the summer when it was 100! But with extreme temperatures came extreme fun.
John didn't know of the many things there are to do in Wausau that start with snow. You can tube, board, shoe, sculpt, mobile, ball and cone (think about it...). And then there's ice -- skate, fish, race, curl and cream (that one was easier). And of course in summer, when all that melts, you have rushing waters perfect for kayaking and a mountain (well, a big hill really) perfect for hiking, biking and exploring.
But we didn't stay outside for the whole episode. It's comfortable year round at Carmelo's Supper Club, the Woodside Art Museum, Bull Falls Brewery, The Grand Theatre and Back When Café.
This episode has the distinction of being the most heavily McGiverned episode yet -- it's just about bursting with McGiverns!

Finding Good Crappie Fishing Spots
Jason made a point in the fall and winter to look for new crappie fishing spots with his electronics. He started in some productive arms of the lake and idled along break lines looking for brush piles with fish.
These creek channel edges are often where fishermen like to drop their brush piles. So Jason scanned with Lowrance HDS 3D Structure Scan for likely looking spots and brush piles until he found schools of crappie holding on them.
Once he saw a good school of fish on a brush pile, he stopped and fished it. He would cast a jig over the top, when they quit biting that, he would pitch to the piles from a closer distance, and finally he would get right on top of them and fish vertically on the pile.
He had one of the best fall/winter periods for crappie fishing in recent years by getting out and hunting for fish more with his electronics.
