Swimming with Tarpon - Georgetown, Grand Cayman 9/20/12
Decided to hop in the ocean and check out a few Tarpon that were swimming around a popular snorkeling area in Grand Cayman while we were in port during our September 2012 family cruise (Jamaica, Grand Cayman, Cozumel). Forgive some of the shakiness, but the water was really rough do to storms close by, and I had no fins or snorkel at the time which would have allowed me to get away from the rocks and into smoother water...plus there were sea urchins everywhere, so I was spending a good amount of effort to stay off the rocks.
GEORGE TOWN, GRAND CAYMAN ISLAND ON CARIBBEAN PRINCESS CRUISE, BY PAUL HODGE, CH 23, HD 720p

This is Chapter 23 of Paul Hodge’s 37 chapter HD video series chronicling the fantastic adventure awaiting you when you take a Princess cruise to the Western Caribbean. This HD video focuses on the 5th day of Paul’s cruise. After a 300+ mile overnight cruise. the Caribbean Princess’ arrived at about 7:00 am in the Grand Cayman Island’s city of George Town, the capital of the Cayman Islands Territory. This HD video shows the arrival, the shuttle boat trips to/from the George Town dock, the exploration of George Town and Paul’s return to the Caribbean Princess at about 2:00 pm.
Grand Cayman is the largest of the three Cayman Islands and the location of the territory's capital, George Town. The Island is administered by the United Kingdom. Its about 76 square miles in size and has a total population of about 52,000+ people, with a majority of its citizens (27,000+) leaving in its capital George Town.
“Of the flora, a good representation of the variety of plant life on Grand Cayman can be found at the Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park located in the North Side District. At the park, one can find wild banana orchids, ghost orchids, thatch palm trees, red birch trees, mahogany trees and various fruit trees such as avocado, mango, guinep, naseberry, breadfruit, and tamarind. Yellow mastics and black mastics can also be seen.” *
In terms of wild life, the Island has blue iguanas, Grand Cayman amazon parrots, Central American agouti, and distinctive species of land crab. “The Cayman Islands Turtle Farm located in the West Bay district raises green sea turtles for their meat and to release into the wild.
Through breeding, the farm produces upwards of 1800 turtles a year. Between 1980 and 2006, the farm released approximately 30,600 turtles to the wild; because of a mark placed on each animal, the released turtles have been seen throughout the Caribbean.” *
“There are just under 600 banks and trust companies in the Grand Cayman, including 43 of the 50 largest banks in the world. Because of this large financial presence on the island, banking, investments, and insurance drive the economy in Grand Cayman.” * The financial services industry accounts for over 55% of the total economy, 36%+ of all employment, and 40%+ of all government revenue. Because of the Cayman Islands’s Financial Secrecy Laws, recent investigations have indicated that the Cayman financial institutions are often used by many crooks to hide money they have stolen or to evade taxes. *
“George Town is the heart of the Cayman Islands financial services industry. The Caymanian government offices are located in the city. The Caymanian government offices are located in George Town. These offices include the Legislative Assembly of the Cayman Islands, the Court Houses and the Government Administration Building.” **
“George Town is a popular port of call for the Caribbean with cruise ships anchoring in George Town Harbour Tuesday through Friday. Cruise ships calling at George Town anchor offshore and ferry their passengers ashore by tenders, also known as shuttle boats. Passengers disembark in George Town, in the centre of the Grand Cayman shopping district and usually remain anchored from early morning until mid-afternoon…….Activities available to tourists in George Town include submarine tours of George Town Harbour, glass-bottom boat tours, snorkelling, scuba-diving, parasailing, charter boat tours, rum distillery tours, art galleries, a historical museum, and of course, shopping and eating.” **
Paul’s HD video series is unique to YouTube because, for the first time on YouTube, a Western Caribbean Cruise is portrayed in great detail so experienced cruisers and people who have never cruised before can get a true feeling as to what its like to cruise for seven days to the beautiful Bahamas, Jamaica, Grand Cayman Island and Cozumel, Mexico.
This commercial free HD video series is dedicated to the many victims of hurricanes Irma, Harvey, Jose and Maria who have suffered terrible injuries and devastation.
Please support public service relief efforts to aid hurricane victims in Texas, Florida, Louisiana and other affected states. Thanks so much for your generosity and thank you for your compassion.
Please enjoy this HD video series and thanks for watching!

Hidden Caves in Grand Cayman Islands Cayman Crystal Cave - Vlog 2 2020
Hidden Caves in Grand Cayman Islands Cayman Crystal Cave - Vlog 2 2020
Second day in the Grand Cayman Islands!!! Cayman Crystal Caves have formed over millions of years. Fossilized shells and animal life in the caves show us that at one time, the mass now containing the caves were all located under the sea. Over time, as sea levels changed and land began to rise, rooms began to form through water erosion, making caves. Within these rooms, spectacular stalagmite and stalagtite crystal structures began to form, as rainwater dripping through the limestone ceiling of the caves left calcium deposits behind. The caves are still today continuing to evolve. The process of stalagmite and stalagtite formation occurs as rainwater becomes slightly acidic when it first travels through surrounding plants, earth and other organic matter. This acidic water dissolves part of the limestone as it seeps through the earth, and re-deposits microscopic calcium layers, as the water drips from the cave ceilings. Over time these deposits collectively form the crystal structures.
Hundreds of years ago, Pirates used these caves as hideouts, and also as shelters from the elements, including hurricanes. Legend has it that there are pirate treasures buried in some of these caves.
As the Cayman Islands became populated, locals used the surrounding lush lands as farmlands and mined the caves for rich fertilizer produced by bat guana, as some of the caves are inhabited by bats. In the last half-century, farming stopped, as the population switched to more lucrative jobs within the tourism and financial sectors.
In the early 1990s, Christian and Ole Sorensen undertook an in-depth search and exploration of all caves in the Cayman Islands and began talks with the Cayman Islands government on developing a cave attraction based on the experience from the family’s development of the very successful Harrison’s caves in Barbados. After a few years, it was realized that the crystal caves of Old Man Bay were extremely unique and stood above any other caves in the Cayman Islands, and for that matter, most of the world. It took almost another two decades to purchase the various parcels which encompass the caves and surrounding rain forest, as well as devise a route to the landlocked site from the main road. In the last few years of planning the attraction, the Berksoy family, who have vast experience in the tourism sector, joined the Sorensen family in this venture and together they have seen Cayman’s newest and very exciting nature tourist attraction to completion.
