Full Hike (WM): The Sprawling Blue Hills Reservation Just Outside of Boston, Massachusetts
Just outside of Boston proper, away from venerable universities and Revolutionary landmarks, is this outdoor island in the city. There are an incredible 125 miles of trails stuffed into a minuscule 15.5 square mile reserve. The lopsided ratio produces a park map that resembles webs weaved by some particularly disorganized arthropods. Trails are represented by colors, shapes, and line types. They loop and intersect; there are many, many intersections. At least, some are numbered.
The single longest route to explore the reservation is the Skyline Trail. While the trail crosses only hills and is average in length (9 miles), do not take it lightly. Some of the inclines are mercilessly steep. Area hikers even use Skyline to train for country-crossing treks or major peaks around the world.
The crown of this hike would be the tallest Great Blue Hill. On top, there are few national historic places to visit: the weather station, an observation tower, and a memorial bridge. The weather station is oldest continuously operating in the United States, and the tower (named Eliot Tower) offers an almost 360-degree view of Greater Boston.
Neighboring the tower is the bridge. It is a sturdy dedication, to a long ago pioneering individual. It was meant to last. Today, hikers can rest on bridge benches, to enjoy a sense of magical solitude. To momentarily break away from where the sparks of revolution were ignited.

My Thoughts:
I think the Boston area is fortunate to have this space in such close proximity. There are many activities for everyone to enjoy, in all seasons. I was surprised by the amount of trails to explore. Park officials do a splendid job of clarifying different routes and numbering the intersections.
I did not fully complete the Skyline Trail, which required continuing west after the weather station. That was both a logistical and personal decision. Logistics required returning to my parked vehicle at the headquarters, and to cover both branches of the trail starting from there. I read that the north branch has better views, therefore decided to hike down that way. And, personally, I did not think it was worthwhile hike all the way to the interstate. Distance wise, mine was equivalent to if I had continued on.

Solo Day Hike - Blue Hills Reservation
I went for a short solo hike today at the Blue Hills Reservation south of Boston, MA. I took the blue Skyline trail from the reservation headquarters over to Eliot Tower on Great Blue Hill. I then hiked the remainder of the loop back to the trail head.
It was a great quick day hike and gave me a chance to start breaking in some new Keen Pyrenees hiking boots (which have been fantastic so far).

Trail Running (Blue Hills, Milton)
Its alway an awesome feeling to be able to run together with my wife, leaving busy lifestyle behind and enjoy the nature.
Let’s hike Blue Hills in Milton, Ma.
A beautiful wooded hike on a very cold winter day. Sometimes it’s just about getting outside and enjoying nature and appreciating it for what it is. Getting exercise and some good cardio is just a plus. Wether you want to hike, take a skiing lesson, climb the observatory or what have you... Blue Hills has it all. Get up and get outside and Happy Exploring ????
Unlike Great Blue Hill Observation Tower, a similar tower at the opposite end of the reservation, Chickatawbut tower is not open to the public. The tower was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. It is named for Chickatawbut, who was a 17th-century sachem of the Wampanoag Indian tribe.
The Blue Hill Meteorological Observatory, also known as Great Blue Hill Weather Observatory, Blue Hill Weather Observatory, or simply the Blue Hill Observatory, in Milton, Massachusetts is the foremost structure associated with the history of weather observations in the United States. Located atop Great Blue Hill south of Boston, Massachusetts, it is home to the oldest continuous weather record in North America, and was the location of the earliest kite soundings of the atmosphere in North America in the 1890s, as well as the development of the radiosonde in the 1930s. The bridge was built in 1904.
MTB Saved my life (Blue Hills Reservation) Milton Ma.
I recorded this video in the summer of 2017. I was going through a really bad time in my life. I didn't even really want to live. I've always loved to hike and made the choice to step it up and buy a mountain bike.
I was extremely depressed until i found my passion of mountain biking in the Blue Hills here in Massachusetts.
If anyone finds themselves going through hardships in life please don't isolate yourself like i did. Try hiking and getting out there in nature. It has a way of cleaning out negativity.
Now I'm on my bike anytime i get the chance!

Hiking the Blue Hills | Skyline Trail
Took a quick jaunt through the Skyline Trails of the Blue Hills. We started the trail in Canton MA and ended in Quincy MA. Nice, fairly easy 9.5ish mile (according to our trackers) hike. We went on a Saturday so it was fairly crowded. Apparently this is one of the most popular trails within the reservation.
Enjoy!

Running Ponkapoag Pond Trail, Blue Hills, Milton, MA
In this series, Kristen introduces running in the Ponkapoag Pond section of the Blue Hills Reservation in Milton, Massachusetts.
Trail Run: 4 mile loop on the Ponkapoag Pond Trail
Trail Directions: Turn right at Exit 3 off I-95 South into a tiny parking area. The info kiosk is at the end of the parking area by a dirt access road. Run .25 miles on the access road where the trail (marked with Green dots) intersects. The loop can be completed either clockwise (continue STRAIGHT at the intersection) or counter-clockwise (turn LEFT at the intersection onto a narrower trail). Running the first means a winding downhill at the start of your run and a gradual uphill climb over roots and rocks in the last 2 miles. Running the later means a rocky start in the first 2 miles with a winding hill climb in the final .25 miles.
Trail Map: Available at Trailside Museum and at the info kiosk in the parking area
Trail Conditions: Wide, dirt packed, protruding roots and rocks (especially in the 2 mile section from Fisherman's Beach to the trailhead)
Trail Difficulty: Easy to Moderate (not as technical as other trails run or in the Blue Hills but still a worthwhile training run)
Trail Notes: Parking is limited and fills quickly. Additional parking is located at Houghton's Pond. No restroom facilities provided in this location. Loop feels longer than 4 miles but is enjoyable, especially the 400 meter section through the Ponkapoag Golf Course (please obey signage in season). Numerous wildlife including coyotes.
