Fishspotting Karboora (Blue Lake), Stradbroke Island
Fishspotting Karboora lake and outflow creek, North Stradbroke Island. The water during this visit (April 2017) was murkier than normal, probably owing to the recent rainfall from ex-cyclone Debbie. Last time I visited, the visibility was 15+ meters.
Karboora has been stable for the past 7,000 years or more, making it significant among the Queensland sand island lakes. It is not “perched” and is unstained by organic matter. Fish species previously recorded in the lake and overflow include (apart from the Rhadinocentrus, Firetails and Gambusia seen here); Empire gudgeon, Longfin eel, Striped gudgeon, Purplespotted gudgeon, Oxleyan pygmy perch and Tandanus catfish.
There are plenty of macroinvertebrates in the lake but no gastropods (snails), probably due to the low calcium concentration in these sandy wetlands.
The lake sits in a beautiful sand valley surrounded by pristine wallum forest. It has significant cultural value for the Quandamooka people.
Note that some sequences have been slowed down, to give you a chance to admire the colours of the dominant male Rhads. If you look closely you can see both a red and a blue strain , but predominantly red. The body colour tends to ochre yellow and rusty read - subtle but very pretty.
The sound was recorded on-site on this windy day, with little bird song.

Australia_North Stradbroke Island
North Stradbroke Island is a place of outstanding natural beauty enjoyed by generations of Queenslanders. Its future has now been protected for generations to come.
The first inhabitants arrived at least 40,000 years ago and North Stradbroke Island is now home to the Noonuccal, Nughie and Goenpul Aboriginal people, who call it Minjerribah. The first recorded European sighting was in 1770 when James Cook named Point Lookout. Colonial settlement began in the 1820′s.
North Stradbroke Island is the ideal holiday destination for families, couples or maybe just a day trip. Located one hour from Brisbane, Straddie is easily accessible by our fast and reliable vehicle ferries or water taxi which depart from Cleveland.
The Island is famous for its scenic headlands, kilometres of rolling surf and white sandy beaches. Although Straddie is the second largest sand island in the world and ideal for four wheel drive enthusiasts, the island's bitumen roads make it suitable for conventional cars.
Fishspotting, Gold Creek
Three views of Gold Creek, Brisbane. The creek was dammed in 1882, creating the Gold Creek Reservoir. The catchment above the reservoir lies exclusively in the D'Aguilar National Park and is largely unaffected by human activity. Attempts were made to introduce European fish species in the dam in the late 1800s (red-finned perch, tench, carp), but I haven't been able to confirm whether this was successful.
Locations include a waterhole in the creek below the reservoir, a small secondary dam below the reservoir wall, and a creek location in the national park above the reservoir. Filmed late February 2017. Sound recorded on-site.
