Sacramento is the capital city of the U.S. state of California, and the county seat of Sacramento County. It is located at the confluence of the Sacramento River and the American River in the northern portion of California's expansive Central Valley. With a 2009 estimated population of 489,676, it is the sixth-largest city in California.[1] Sacramento is the core cultural and economic center of the Sacramento metropolitan area which includes seven counties; with an estimated population of 2,927,123.[2] Its metropolitan area is the fourth largest in California after the Greater Los Angeles Area, San Francisco Bay Area, and the San Diego metropolitan area as well as the 25th largest in the United States. A city attaining global status, Sacramento was cited by Time magazine as America's most ethnically and racially integrated city in 2002.[3][4]
Sacramento became a city through the efforts of John Sutter, a Swiss immigrant, and James W. Marshall. Sacramento grew quickly thanks to the protection of Sutter's Fort, which was established by Sutter in 1839. During the California Gold Rush, Sacramento was a major distribution point, a commercial and agricultural center, and a terminus for wagon trains, stagecoaches, riverboats, the telegraph, the Pony Express, and the First Transcontinental Railroad.
California State University, Sacramento, more commonly known as Sacramento State or Sac State, is the major local university. It is one of the twenty-three campuses of the California State University system. In addition, the University of California, Davis, is located in nearby Davis, 15 miles (24 km) west of the capital. The UC Davis Medical Center, a world-renowned research hospital, is located in the city of Sacramento.

Born in Tuxpan, Veracruz, Mexico, Jet Martinez moved to San Francisco in 1997 to pursue a painting and printmaking degree. This artist is best known for his style that merges traditional muralism, global folk motifs and contemporary street art. Martinez has become well known in the Bay Area’s thriving mural scene. As we already mentioned, San Francisco has a rich history of vibrant urban and street art scene. Murals are particularly important in the city’s art scene. Northern California, and specifically the Mission District of San Francisco, has long nurtured and innovated the mural tradition and is considered to be a national mural capital of the United States. This rich history of mural art drew Martinez to the area, where he spent years honing a style defined by bold, gradient color; technical brushwork and an aesthetic inspired by Mexican pottery, embroidery and textiles. After completing over 80 public and commissioned murals, he has become one of the most widely recognized public artists in the Bay Area.

SUMMARY
=======
Sacramento ( SAK-rə-MEN-toh; Spanish: [sakɾaˈmento]) is the capital city of the U.S. state of California and the seat of Sacramento County. Located at the confluence of the Sacramento River and the American River in Northern California's Sacramento Valley, Sacramento's estimated 2018 population of 501,334 makes it the sixth-largest city in California and the 9th largest capital in the United States. Sacramento is the seat of the California Assembly, the Governor of California, and Supreme Court of California, making it the state's political center and a hub for lobbying and think tanks. Sacramento is also the cultural and economic core of the Sacramento metropolitan area, which had 2010 population of 2,414,783, making it the fifth largest in California.Sacramento is the fastest-growing major city in California, owing to its status as notable financial center on the West Coast and as a major educational hub, home of Sacramento State University and University of California, Davis. Similarly, Sacramento is a major center for the California healthcare industry, as the seat of Sutter Health, the world-renowned UC Davis Medical Center, and the UC Davis School of Medicine, and notable tourist destination in California, as the site of The California Museum, the Crocker Art Museum, California Hall of Fame, the California State Capitol Museum, and the Old Sacramento State Historic Park. Sacramento is known for its evolving contemporary culture, dubbed the most hipster city in California. In 2002, the Harvard University Civil Rights Project conducted for Time magazine named Sacramento America's Most Diverse City. Before the arrival of the Spanish, the area was inhabited by the Nisenan people indigenous peoples of California. Spanish cavalryman Gabriel Moraga named surveyed and named the Rio del Santísimo Sacramento (Sacramento River) in 1808, after the Blessed Sacrament, referring to the Eucharist in the Catholic Church. In 1839, Juan Bautista Alvarado, Mexican governor of Alta California granted the responsibility of colonizing the Sacramento Valley to Swiss-born, Mexican citizen John Augustus Sutter, who subsequently established Sutter's Fort and the settlement at the Rancho Nueva Helvetia. Following the American Conquest of California and the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo, the waterfront developed by Sutter began to be developed and incorporated in 1850 as the City of Sacramento. As a result of the California Gold Rush, Sacramento became a major commercial center and distribution point for Northern California, serving as the terminus for the Pony Express and the First Transcontinental Railroad.

Paul Boden on the Homeless Industry and the Criminalization of Homelessness
Paul Boden’s Mantra: Be fearless. There’s nothing worse than coming from the streets – what are you going to do to me?
As a native New Yorker, Paul has a reputation for telling it how it is … in a colorful way. He is passionate about defending human rights and addressing social injustices. He demands equality, and he demands the truth. Total equality is saying what you know and what you believe to everyone, no matter where they are from. More importantly, he says: “Get over your shit and get involved.”
In this interview, Paul begins by talking about the federal government’s shift in focus, a shift based on corporate greed that led to skyrocketing rates of homelessness.
Prior to 1980, the federal government provided funding for affordable housing – approximately $54 billion a year in today’s dollars. After Ronald Reagan took office, the government stopped funding affordable housing and redirected the money to homeless services. This was a bureaucratic approach that dehumanized homeless individuals.
According to Paul, this current approach prevents us from solving homelessness. “The more we institutionalize it, the more we professionalize homelessness ... the further we get away from ending it.”
What’s worse is the government also redirected funding away from those who needed it most to help those who didn’t. The Reagan Revolution, according to Paul: We are going to triple our home ownership housing subsidies and eliminate our poor people's housing subsidies because one is charity and therefore there's no profit for corporate America. The other benefits the mortgage industries, the banks and the construction industry.
As an Executive of WRAP (Western Regional Advocacy Project), Paul is extremely knowledgeable on homelessness and tells it like it is. And he has a lot to say in this interview – so many interesting tidbits.
Here are a few highlights:
“It wasn’t a lack of cops that created homelessness, yet they are the number one department addressing the issue.”
“It wasn’t closed parks that created homelessness, yet we close our parks thinking that will make homelessness disappear.”
On Mayors: “There is so much more concern about how the general public is impacted by the presence of homeless people and so little concern with the impact that it is having on homeless people themselves.”
On Educating the Public about Homelessness: “You keep changing the name and the fucking media reports on it like it’s a new initiative ... The public education on this issue is so lacking.”
On Criminalization: “If you look poor and homeless in a cop’s mindset, if you look like one of them, they’re going to fuck with you. If not, you get a pass ... I have never seen a family of shoppers with the little kids eating ice cream on the sidewalk get a ticket. Our argument isn’t that they should, our argument is that no one should.”
This is an important interview. I hope you will take the time to watch the whole thing. Sadly, the people who need to watch this video won't ever get past the title. Whenever I bring up the homeless industry, people who work in the sector feel threatened and become defensive.
I honestly don't understand how anyone remotely connected to homeless services doesn't question from time to time: “WHAT THE FUCK ARE WE DOING?!” More committees are being formed every day, more research is being funded, criminalization is growing, and maybe a few shelter beds or housing units are created (Paul says he is sick of baby steps), yet homelessness continues to grow exponentially. SOMETHING IS BROKE!
About WRAP and Chronic Homelessness, a Post-1980s Phenomenon
I mentioned above that Paul is a WRAP Executive. According to the WRAP website, WRAP was created to expose and eliminate the root causes of civil and human rights abuses of people experiencing poverty and homelessness in our communities.
For example: Did you know that prior to the 1980s, there was no such thing as chronic homelessness? This phenomenon was created along with an industry to deal with chronic homelessness.

Trailer park millionaires
Some of the richest people in the US, including billionaires Warren Buffett and Sam Zell, have made millions from trailer parks at the expense of the country's poorest people. Seeing their success, ordinary people from across the country are now trying to follow in their footsteps and become trailer park millionaires. The Guardian went to Orlando to learn the tricks of the trade from Frank Rolfe, the self-appointed dean of Mobile Home University, as he led would-be investors around a trailer park for sex offenders.

Lackawanna Cut-Off - Part 22: Thomas T. Taber III Interview
Join us as we talk with a man that has been called the greatest living railroad historian, Tom Taber III. Mr. Taber, who is 90 years old, is the editor and co-author (with his father, the late Tom Taber Jr.) of the 3-volume compendium on the Lackawanna Railroad: the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad in the 19th and 20th Century, widely regarded as one of the best books ever written about an individual U.S. railroad. During the interview, Mr. Taber will tell us about: the state of railroading (including Amtrak and in Europe) and of railfanning; his experience in firing a steam locomotive during his youth; serving as a railroad engineer testing diesel locomotives in Canada during the Korean War; and even what he thinks about the Lackawanna Cut-Off project. This is a rare opportunity to hear the man himself--the author of 30 books--talk about both himself and his dad (who was the only person to have a commuter train named after him - the Tom Taber Express).
