Blue Moon Valley Lijiang Yunnan China 麗江藍月谷
The colour of the river can be blue or white in colour depends on the weather a day before. If there is raining on the previous day, the white mud and the limestone rubble at the riverbed will make the water white in colour.
There are multi tiers waterfalls in a few sections of this river. We stopped at the few popular spots for photography.
There are ‘yak rentals’ for riding here. You have to pay for the yak ride to walk across the river and back. You can also find many couples taking their pre wedding photographs here.
The blue moon valley is considered as the Jiuzhaigou valley of Yunnan. There is also section of bigger waterfall at the end of the river.

Blue Moon Valley (麗江藍月谷), Lijiang, Yunnan
Blue Moon Valley actually is an extremely blue river meandering through a lush valley of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. Seen from a distance, it resembles a blue crescent moon inlaid at the foot of the mountain. That's how the place got its beautiful name! However, blue is not the only colour of the river. If it rains, the white mud and limestone rubble at the riverbed will be swirled up, making the water as white as milk. Therefore, local Naxi people name it White Water River (Baishui River).
The White Water River is fed by melting snow and ice running down from Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. The water is freezing; even in summer, and people still cannot bear the piercing cold when they dabble in the river. But it is a favorite iced drink in summer. Legend has it that, when two Naxi youngsters fall in love, the boy will be tested by standing barefoot in the cold river in winter to show his committed love for the girl. Folks believe that this tested love will last forever in the presence of the holy snow mountain. So, the river is considered the Love River in local people's mind.

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (Yulong Mountain) is the southernmost Glacier in the northern hemisphere.
It consist of 13 peaks and among them is Shanzidou at an altitude of 5,600 meters - chinatravelguide.com
Visitors can go to 3 places in the area to see the snow mountain : Glacier Park (altitude 4500m), Yak Meadow (altitude 3600m) and Spruce Meadow (altitude 3200m).
Blue Moon Valley lies at the foot of Yulong Snow Mountain. It was fed by meltwater from Yulong Snow Mountain. The water of the lake is crystal clear with stunning shade of blue.
We went to Spruce Meadow and Blue Moon Valley in end of November 2019.

Jade Snow Mountain (玉龙雪山 is standing at 18,000 ft above sea level. Not an easy trip due to thin oxygen. Brought our 3 years old daughter there. Do take note it may cause some uneasiness for child around 3 years old, based on our experience. Do take note to buy a few bottle of oxygen which cost around RMB15 to RMB20. Be careful of tour guide selling at higher price around RMB60 per bottle. Buy before hand on any grocery shop.
Blue Moon Valley (麗江藍月谷) is just below the Jade Snow Mountain. Here we have no issue with the oxygen because it is not a high ground place.

Blue Moon Valley area is also called Shika Snow Mountain area it is located in the southwestern Shangri-La it is about 7km away from Shangril-La county with about 15 min driving. Cable in this attraction has began to serve since 2006. With a 4,190-meter-long, this cable is the longest one in Yunnan Province. People can get to the peak (4,000 meters above the sea level) from the foot of the mountain (3,270 meters above the sea level). When standing on the peak, people can have a view of Meili Snow Mountain, Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, as well as snow mountains in Daocheng, Sichuan.Shika is a Tibetan word (Shangri-la dialect) meaning a mountain abounding in deer. It is said when Sakyamuni began to preach Buddhism in the Deer Park, two deer listened to him attentively in knee-down posture. Therefore, deer stands for common people and is regarded as mascots in Tibetan Buddhism. It is the symbol of longevity and strict adherence to dharma.
