Gili Meno - my favourite Gili island
GILI MENO
Only a kilometre from Gili Trawangan and set in the middle of the three islets lies the real Robinson Crusoe experience of the Gilis with some of the best beaches to be found.
Most beautiful island in the world
Only two kilometres long and one wide, Gili Meno is the smallest of the three islands and by far the most peaceful and under developed. It’s possible to walk around the island along the beach or paths of Gili Meno in under two hours.
Most visitors are attracted to Gili Meno for the lure of total escapism and it is therefore very popular with honeymooning couples and adventurous castaway types.
The dining scene is predominantly local cafes with grilled fish on the beach as dusk approaches.
Lazing around in a hammock, reading books and playing chess with the friendly locals also ranks very highly on the daily Meno agenda.
For divers and snorkelers, the island boasts the infamous ‘Gili Meno Wall‘ where during the day turtles freely swim by and giant gorgonian fans hang amongst the colourful corals. At night divers can witness huge Moray Eels and the entertaining Spanish Dancers, baby cuttlefish and a whole array of crustaceans.
GETTING to MENO
Most visitors arrive via Gili Trawangan then jump on a connecting island hopper boat for the fifteen minute trip over the channel.
Boats depart from Gili Trawangan at 9.30am and 4.00pm daily (Cost is approximately IDR 23,000) and from Gili Air at 8.30am and 3.00pm (a twenty minute ride, Cost is IDR 25,000).
Visitors from mainland Lombok leave from Bangsal harbour in public boats for the twenty-five minute crossing (IDR 25,000). Purchase tickets only from the concrete Koperasi Karya Bahari building and not from the touts that line the roads into Bangsal.
There are no set timings for the crossing from Lombok to Gili Meno, it’s up to the captain once the boat is full but it is possible to charter your own public boat for a fixed price of IDR 190,000 or buy up remaining available tickets for a speedier departure.
The most popular stretch of sand on Gili Meno is to be found to the
left of where the boats pull up on the beach. This southern beach strip is where the majority of accommodation getting there beach life on the island is to be found. There are no hawkers to disrupt a day’s sunbathing and the beach huts lining the sand offer a perfect respite from the heat where visitors can buy drinks and snacks from the neighboring warungs.
Snorkeling equipment can be hired from any of the local operators. Swimming is perfectly safe in the calm waters here but don’t venture too far out from the shoreline.
As with Trawangan, visibility is constantly good year round. Expect to see Hawksbill and Leatherback turtles, schools of Batfish, Blue-spotted stingrays and many varieties of hard and soft corals. If you look hard enough you could be lucky enough to find rare and unusual nudibranchs amongst other lesser-spotted micro critters.
EATING MENO
Although it may not appear so at a first glance there are actually a fair number of places to eat along the beachfront all with spectacular views over to Lombok or Gili Trawangan. Balenta is on the north of the island and specializes in local Sasak cuisine with Mount Rinjani and mainland Lombok as a dramatic backdrop.
Bibi’s Café is part of Villa Nautilus and has the usual mix of Western and Indonesian dishes with reputedly the best pizzas on the island.
The Jungle Bar is to be found inside the Tao’ Kombo bamboo huts set up literally in the bush! A quiet and secluded spot on the far southern tip of the island.
Malia’s Child is a popular gathering spot for budget travelers and serves a heady mix of Indonesian and European cuisines.
The Rust Bar and Restaurant right at the harbour front is street side in a central location with cool music and plenty of punters hanging around for after dinner drinks.
SLEEPING MENO
Don’t come to Gili Meno expecting to find the top level of accommodation as on Trawangan. The charming Thai style huts on the main beach are very popular as they are the only rooms on all three islands that are situated actually close to the water’s edge.
Mid range bungalows are generally situated slightly back from the main path whilst budget rooms can be found dotted throughout the whole of the island and can be found just along the main strip.
The thatched bungalows and rooms are situated in a shady tropical gardens on the northern part of the island.
There’s a mix of cheaper rooms and better-appointed bungalows with freshwater shower facilities and fan. The beach out front is quiet and charming in its own right and visitors will find few distractions or disturbances.
There are not too many activities to be found on Gili Meno, which is part of its appeal. Those who simply cannot refrain from some form of activity will find the perfect for sun-bathing on the clear water-beach for a morning or afternoon.
Best Snorkelling in LOMBOK! Visit the Southwest Gili's (WeWillNomad)
Unlike the famous Gili Islands in northwest Lombok, the Southwest Gilis are largely uninhabited and have yet to be discovered by mass travellers.
We spend a few days in the peaceful village of Taun - situated on a wide, placid bay in Sekotong with a sparkling turquoise ocean and dazzling white sand stretching in a wide sweep around the bay.
In the distance just out in the calm bay are the three lovely islands of Gili Nanggu, Gili Tangkong and Gili Sudak (and the tiny island of Gili Kedis) - all easily accessible by local outrigger boats. A small sign in the nearby village will direct you to the local boat hire area, where you can arrange boat trips out to Gili Nanggu and the other islands.
You will find more information on the SouthWest of Lombog on our blog:

Gili Meno Indonesia_LOMBOK.
INDONESIA, LOMBOK, GILI ISLANDS
The Gili Islands (Indonesian: Tiga Gili, Three Gilis, Kepulauan Gili, Gili Islands) are an archipelago of three small islands, Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air, just off the northwest coast of Lombok, Indonesia.
The islands are a popular destination for Western tourists looking for a remote island experience. Each island has several small resorts, usually consisting of a collection of huts for tourists, a small pool and restaurant. Most local inhabitants live on Trawangan in a township stretching along its east side just inland (which is also where most recent development is taking place). Automobiles and motorised traffic are prohibited on the islands by local ordinance, so the preferred method of transportation is by foot and bicycle or the horse-drawn carriage called a cidomo. Diving in and around the Gilis is also popular due to the abundance of marine life and attractive coral formations.
GILI TRAWANGAN
Gili Trawangan is the largest of Lombok's Gili Islands and the only one to rise significantly (60 m) above sea level. Measuring 3 km long and 2 km wide, it has a population of around 1500. The name Trawangan originates from the Indonesian word Terowongan (Tunnel) due to the presence of a cave tunnel built there during Japanese occupation in World War 2. Of the Gilis, Trawangan is the most developed and geared towards tourism. The main concentration of settlement, recreation, accommodation and diving business is situated on the eastern side of the island. A local pub, Tîr na Nôg claims that Trawangan is the smallest island in the world with an Irish pub. It was previously administered under Lombok Barat Regency along with Senggigi until 2010 when the Gili islands came under the jurisdiction of the new North Lombok Regency (Kabupaten Lombok Utara).
On Gili Trawangan (as well as the other two Gilis), there are no motorised vehicles. The main means of transportation are bicycles (rented by locals to tourists) and cidomo (a small horse-drawn carriage). For travelling to and from each of the Gilis, locals usually use motorised boats and speedboats.
Some of the first inhabitants of Gili Trawangan were fishermen and farmers from Sulawesi. Previous to human settlement Gili Trawangan was covered in forest and deer lived on the island.
The economy of Gili Trawangan centres on tourism, as the island is too small to support any broad scale agriculture, and too remote to allow economically viable industry or commerce. There is a mosque on the island.
GILI MENO
Gili Meno is the middle of Lombok's three northwest coast Gilis. Gili Meno has a population of about 500, mainly concentrated on the centre of the island. The main income comes from tourism, coconut plantation and fishing. On the west side of the island there is a small shallow lake that produces salt in the dry season. Until a few years ago there was also a small production of seaweed on the reef at the north end of the island. Gili Meno has swimming beaches all around the island, and a bird sanctuary.
The island attracts fewer tourists than Gili Trawangan and is the quietest and smallest of the islands. However, honeymooners are often drawn to the crystal clear water and idyllic, secluded white beaches.
There is no fresh water on the island and it has to be brought by boat from Lombok. Electricity is supplied from generators on the island. There are no cars or motorbikes.
GILI AIR
Gili Air is the second smallest of the islands and the closest to mainland Lombok, making it popular with honeymoon couples and travellers seeking a quiet retreat. It has a population of about 1,800. The island offers excellent snorkelling and scuba diving off its east coast, and turtles can be seen along the coral reef.
Proximity to Gili Meno, the smallest and most secluded of the islands and to Gili Trawangan the largest island, known for its many restaurants and parties, makes Gili Air a happy Medium of seclusion with adequate services. Both other Islands are a quick boat ride away.

Fast boat from Bali to Gili Trawangan | Travel vlog | Indonesia
We booked the cheapest fast boat service from Padang Bai in Bali to Gili Trawangan. Only $35 australian, but you get what you pay for. The journey was traumatic to say the least. We were packed onto a small crowded boat, in 30 degree heat. The waves churned the boat from side to side, Trish was a little worse for wear for the full 1.5 hour journey.
Getting off the boat was just as interesting as we climbed down the side of the boat onto the beachfront, waves circling our ankles. Our luggage was piling up on the shore as the men roughly balanced each piece to avoid the salty water at their feet.
Our suggestion, if you can afford it, get the more expensive boat.

KENAWA ISLAND SUNSET - KOMODO ISLAND BOAT TOUR
KENAWA ISLAND had an INCREDIBLE SUNSET on the first day of our KOMODO ISLAND BOAT TOUR with WANAU ADVENTURES! This little ISLAND was rich in diversity. There were tiny hobbit houses, a beautiful beach, blue water and a cool mountain to view the SUNSET! We spent 2 hours on the island and it was a perfect amount of time. Our favorite part was when we got back to the boat and the whole sky turned red! This was day 1 of our 4 day tour where we lived on a boat and sailed across the INDONESIAN WATERS.

Gili to Bali | good and bad of fast boats | Gili Trawangan
We scrapped our tickets back to Bali and traded them in for a high quality fast boat. Originally the journey with Wahana ferries to Gili Trawangan was horrible to say the least. In an effort to avoid the worst of the rocky journey back to Bali we decided to go with Blue ferries instead which have better reviews.
To be the judge of which is worse, check out our vlog on getting to the Gili islands using Wahana ferries.
Watch here
Honestly, it might just be a good idea to avoid fast boats altogether, but then you might miss out on some amazing locations.

Gili Trawangan, Lombok | Travel Diary
Here’s a recap of my trip to Gili Trawangan in Indonesia, off the coast of northwest Lombok island.
The island abounds with natural beauty, blessed with breathtaking landscapes and known for their coral reefs just offshore. It’s a place to slow down and breathe, to appreciate what we have while we watch the sky … and if we weren’t already, to fall in love with the clear blue ocean.
