Every evening the world’s smallest penguin, the little blue penguin (korora) scurry home to their burrows. Visitors enjoy the magical spectacle as blue penguins pop out of the sea and make their way home. Come view them in their natural habitat - your tour fees contribute to revegetation, predator control, nestbox building and scientific management. Blue Penguins Pukekura is a joint venture between land owners Korako Karetai whanau (Family) and Otago Peninsula Trust. Truly the Wildlife Capital of New Zealand

Yellow-Eyed Penguins at Penguin Place Dunedin New Zealand
About a half hour drive from Dunedin is New Zealands Yellow-eyed Penguin Conservation Reserve. Mr Howard McGrouther established the reserve in 1985. He now provides guided tours through a series of covered trenches and observation huts where the penguins can be observed emerging from the sea and resting in their native habitat. This conservation project is a multi-Award Winner and is entirely financed through these guided tours.

Video taken at the Royal Albatross Centre, Dunedin, New Zealand. The Centre staff maintain a sanctuary for the penguins, fencing out people and predators, but the penguins live as they do in the wild. When the chicks are old enough, the parent penguins take turns going to sea for the day to find fish.
When tours began in 1997, the Centre had only 14 breeding pairs of penguins; in the 2015 count, there were 207 pairs! Well done everyone, helping this species to grow!

Spring has definitely sprung at our little penguin colony at Pilots Beach, we now have 41 chicks hatched from 184 eggs in total. Here is one freshly out of the egg trying entice dad to hand over food. The egg shell can still be seen in the nest, so this chick is no more than a day old. It will no doubt work out how to get food in no time - and then it’s all hard work for the parents. These chicks are fully grown and ready for the big blue in 8 weeks. Then the parents will probably do it all over again- potentially raising 4 chicks in one season.
