Les moins de 20 ans ne peuvent pas le connaître les événements qui ont marqué l’annonce de sa décès en cellule policière. Le Blue Penny Museum consacre depuis le 8 février une exposition sur le chanteur Kaya et le rastafarisme dans le cadre des vingt ans de sa mort.
L’une des pièces phares de l’exposition est l’affiche du concert organisé par le Mouvement républicain de Rama Valayden à la rue Edward VII, à Rose-Hill, appelant à la dépénalisation du gandia. C’est en y participant et en fumant un joint sur scène que Kaya, Joseph Réginald Topize pour l’état-civil, est arrêté. Ce, après qu’un quotidien du matin en ait fait mention le lendemain à sa Une, changeant le cours de son destin à jamais.
En tant que rasta, Kaya n’a pas voulu nier la vérité, ce qui l’a conduit au centre de détention des Casernes centrales, notoirement connu comme Alcatraz. Jusqu’au 30 mars, les visiteurs pourront visionner un film sur les graves émeutes qui ont secoué Maurice ainsi que les journaux qui ont fait état du bilan humain et matériel.
Emmanuel Richon, conservateur du Blue Penny Museum, fait ressortir que cette exposition est une belle façon de rendre hommage à celui qui a d’abord été plébiscité à La Réunion avant d’être adulé par les siens. « C’est après son passage à La Réunion où il a enregistré ses premiers disques que les Mauriciens l’ont adopté », déclare l’ancien coopérant qui a connu les événements de février 1999.
L’exposition qui est également axée sur le rastafarisme, dont faisait partie Kaya, vise à la reconnaissance de ce groupe souvent victime de préjugés victime et de violence de la part de la police.

Mauritius Tagesausflüge - Port Louis
Während unseres Urlaubs auf Mauritius haben wir auch einen Tagesausflug in den Norden der Insel gemacht. Zuerst ging es in die Hauptstadt Port Louis. Hier haben wir das Blue Penny Museum besucht. In dem Museum ist die Kolonialgeschichte der Insel dargestellt sowie eine Sammlung der wertvollen Briefmarken aus den Zeiten der britischen Kolonialzeit. Die Blaue Mauritius ist auch dabei.
Nach einem Besuch auf dem Wochenmarkt in der Nähe des Hafens ging es mit einer Yacht an der Küste entlang in Richtung Norden nach Trou aux Biches. Nach dem Mittagessen ging es dann wieder mit dem Bus weiter an das Cap Malheureux mit der vorgelagerten Insel Coin de Mire. Danach ging es zur Firma Historic Marine in Goodlands. Hier werden maßstabsgetreu diverse (historische) Schiffe in bester Handarbeit nachgebaut. Zum Abschluss ging es dann noch nach Pamplemousses in den Botanischen Garten. Der ist berühmt für seine Wasserlilien und verschiedensten Palmensorten.

Umar Timol partage une affection particulière au monde artistique. Bercé par les mots depuis son enfance, il est devenu poète. Quelques années de cela, il s'est également lancé dans la photographie. Devenu spécialiste de portraits en noir et blanc il essaye de capturer l'instant où la personne qu'il photographie enlève le personnage qu'il joue au quotidien pour révéler sa véritable identité.
Une quête pas aussi facile. Parfois, cela prend des minutes et plusieurs essais, concède Umar Timol. Enseignant de français, il a déjà publié plusieurs contes et poèmes. Il exposera 28 portraits d'auteurs mauriciens au Blue Penny Museum en avril. Les portraits d'Alain Gordon-Gentil, Ananda Devi, Jean Claude Andou, Gillian Geneviève et Michel Ducasse, entre autres y figurent. Le but est également de promouvoir une meilleure visibilité des auteurs locaux.
