Blue Pools Track, Haast Pass, Wanaka, Central lakes, New Zealand
Blue pools track is a very popular walk found in the Haast Pass in New Zealand. Included in this video is the access track from Cameron Flat Campground. The track meanders through largely untouched native Beech forest to the confluence of Blue River and the Makarora River. The deep pools here are of a very light blue colour due to both rivers being glacier feed.
From the pools 2 much less traveled tracks head off one up the Young Valley and one further up Blue River these tracks are much less maintained and considerable less popular.

HOW TO DO IT YOURSELF:
Rob Roy's Glacier track departs from Raspberry Flat Car Park in Mount Aspiring National Park. An hour drive from Wanaka.
The upper lookout hike (what we did) is around a 3-4 hour return walk.
It is mostly an incline to the upper lookout but not intense. Suitable for those with low-moderate fitness levels.

Things to do in Wanaka - Our Wanaka Weekend
A family wedding in Wanaka, New Zealand had our adventure addiction curious, and after a few hours on the net searching things to do in Wanaka, our itinerary was mapped out.
Day one we set off on our 428km road trip, music blasting, and sun shining toward Wanaka.
Upon arrival we settled in to a family holiday home and the adventures began. Exploring the lively township, we walked along the lake side, explored the Wanaka Dinosaur Park, and marvelled as we looked out at Lake Wanaka’s famous Lone Tree.
Ending the day with an aerial flight we captured some birds-eye action of Wanaka Township.
Waking to perfect boating conditions, we woke the household and spent a day on the lake, taking the ‘tinny’ out, heading across to Ruby Island for a family picnic and swim.
A great thing to do in Wanaka is take the 1-hour scenic drive through native New Zealand forest to visit the Blue Pools Walk. Although the weather was moody and the rain was falling, it didn’t hinder our enthusiasm when we visited the crystal clear waters of the Blue Pools. This was an unreal and wonderful sight! Although the courage was there to jump off the bridge, “nana” said no in the pouring rain, so on we went. We will certainly be back to fulfil this dare!
As the holiday came to an end, we gathered our things and prepared for our long drive back home to Christchurch. But not before we made one last stop at the wharf which was our daughter’s favourite thing to do in Wanaka; to feed the big eels and trout, which are thankfully protected and a great sight to be seen. These eels are well over 100 years old!
Wanaka is a great spot for a family holiday.
We believe spending quality time with family is the most important role in life. One that us “Weekend Wanderers” have made a ritual. It’s great for the mind, body and soul.
We bring our adventures to you so you can travel with us!

-- About this video --
After an epic month travelling the West Coast of New Zealand we are finally leaving the West Coast region through the Haast Pass, which goes through the Southern Alps of the South Island in the Mt Aspiring National Park. It’s also one of the most scenic New Zealand road trips.
We leave Haast on the West Coast and make our way through amazing alpine and forest scenery. The first stop on our list through the Haast Pass is Thunder Creek Falls.
Thunder Creek Falls at Haast Pass is a super short walk to a 25m waterfall tumbling into the river below. It’s one of the more impressive New Zealand waterfalls. We go check it out until something happens to Robin...
Back in the campervan, we continue to our next stop at the Haast Blue Pools. The Blue Pools of Haast is an hour return walk to some super blue and clear glacial waters, as well as ancient podocarp forest. It’s a stunning location and definitely worth the stop in Haast Pass.
So what do you think of Haast Pass? Would you stop at Thunder Creek Falls or the Blue Pools of Haast along the way?
