Capri and its Blue Grotto - Italy's Legends by the Sea
Capri was already in ancient times a place for the rich and beautiful. Today Capri is one of the most famous islands in the world. Millions of tourists visit it. But there are in fact still unknown corners on the island in the Gulf of Naples.
Thus, at the very top of Capri, there is a hermit monastery with a view to the Vesuvius. Vittorio Staiano and Carmine Russo have to ring the bells at exactly twelve o'clock. But the way to the monastery is not so easy, a chair lift and a steep path await them; as a reward, a good coffee in the chapel beckons with heavenly peace.
In the hustle and bustle that reigns among them, Michele Balsamo gets his jewel back into shape. He is the proud winner of the Vespa Club. His Ape tricycle transporter with curtains, jukeboxes and romantic lighting has been voted the most beautiful on the island.
The most famous spot of Capri is not on the island, but below it: La Grotta Azzurra. When the sea is calm, Roberto rows tourists into the Blue Grotto in a tiny boat and sings in phenomenal acoustics, waiting for a decent tip. There is competition for the paying guests. Word has long since got around which nationalities are particularly generous and which are not.
Opposite Capri is the Amalfi Coast. Legendary places like Sorrento or Positano lie on the steep coast between Naples and Salerno. Who wants to build on this panorama road, calls Giovanni Bottone. He runs a transport company with mules and is well known. He is in charge of several construction sites at the same time, all of which can only be reached by stairs. It is often necessary to climb over 500 steps. Then only Giovanni's animals carry bricks or mortar. But there are also places where not even his donkeys can get to.
The small bay Conca dei Marini can only be reached from the water. There, the Lauritanos run the restaurant La Tonnarella. In former times the tuna fish were gathered here, since the 1950s they were not seen here anymore. But Jacky Kennedy came as a guest to the bay and ate a pasta in the beach cottage of Umberto. That was the beginning of the restaurant. Today Umbertos young granddaughters run the shop with the difficult logistics and the risk that not one guest will come in rough seas.
The Morvillo fishing family also depends on the weather. They are the only ones on the coast who are allowed to fetch Gamberetti from the sea. Her catch is so coveted that it is sold directly from the cutter. The director of the Marine National Park makes sure that this family remains the only shrimp fisher. He also uses the so-called sea sweeper every day, a floating rust bucket that collects garbage between Sorrento and Amalfi.
Maria Cirillo trains with her rescue dogs in the place that gave the coast its name. She makes Golden Retriever get people who threaten to drown out of the water. But before the work begins, there is a coffee at the bar and a round of cornetti for the dogs. Who knows what will happen on the busy beach?
Blue Grotto, Capri, Italy - Relaxing boat tour. Grotto Azzurra
The Blue Grotto (Grotto Azzura in Italian) is Capri’s jewel in the crown. This legendary sea cave was once the Roman Emperor Tiberius’ private swimming pool. Bathed in an ethereal blue light it is your must see place to visit on the island.
Thinking of visiting the Grotto on a visit to Capri to see the natural phenomenon for yourself or just fancy watching a tranquil, relaxing boat ride, whichever I hope you enjoy the film.
How to get there: The Grotto is located on the north west coast of the island. If you don’t have a car you can either take a boat from Marina Grande or travel there by bus.
A boat tour from Marina Grande will cost you about 26 euros, comprising the trip to the cave, the rowing boat that takes you into the cave and your entrance fee. Allow about an hour and a half. At peak times there can be quite a line to enter the cave. There are various boat tours including a tour around the island.
Alternatively you can travel there by bus. Buses run from the port Marina Grande to Capri or Anacapri. The bus from Marina Grande to Anacapri takes about 20 minutes and 15 minutes from there to the Grotto. Or why not take the funicular up to Capri and catch the bus from there. The ticket office is to the right as you get off the ferry. A day pass “unico Capri” costs 6.90 euros and covers all your island travel except the Monte Solaro cable car. Take the bus to Anacapri, change then take the bus to the Blue Grotto, you can’t miss it as it is the last stop. Walk down the stairs and wait for your rowing boat. If you travel by bus you wont have to hang around waiting for the rest of your party to go into the grotto.
Once you have enjoyed the grotto take some refreshments at the kiosk up above the grotto before taking the bus back to Capri or Anacapri to carry on your sightseeing.
Tips:
Best light is apparently noon until 2pm. Queues reduce after 3pm but the sea can get rougher and sometimes is too rough to enter. Go early to avoid the lines.
You will need to climb into a row boat. Each rowing boat only holds 3 passengers and the oarsman. You buy your entrance ticket at a floating ticket office first, no credit cards accepted so have enough cash. Be prepared to enter the cave you will need to lie down flat in the boat, the boatman will then pull the boat into the narrow opening of the cave with a chain. It’s a tight squeeze.
The rowing boat costs 13 euros each, which includes the 4 euro entrance fee and don’t forget to tip your guide, be prepared for 5 – 10 euros, it will make him happy.
Money saving tip:
Entrance to the Grotto is free on the first Sunday of every month.
The History Bit:
The cave was discovered by the Romans and used by Emperor Tiberius’ as a private bathing pool and temple. A number of statues have been found in the cave and some are still believed to be lying at the bottom of the cave. The cave became abandoned as locals feared it was inhabited by spirits until it was rediscovered in 1826 and popularised by the writer August Lopisch and painter Ernst Fries.
The Science Bit:
Why does the water inside the cave appear to be bathed in an ethereal blue light?
There are actually two entrance holes into the cave, one directly below the other. The small top hole is the boat entrance to the cave. The lower hole is below the line of the water allows light into the cave which lights up the bottom of the cave, but filters out all but the blue light giving the water it’s brilliant emerald blue colour.

Here's our experience visiting the Blue Grotto in Capri, Italy (Gotta Azzurra, Italia) in May 2019.
We arrived by sea via a private boat tour (using Gianni's Boat Tours) that started in Marina Grande harbor and went around the whole of Capri island, but let us stop by the famous Blue Cave / Blaue Grotte Bleue too. It is possible to visit from land too.
Grotta Azzurra is one of the most famous tourist attractions on Capri, often listed on Top Things to do in Capri and Most recommended places to visit in Capri and in the Amalfi Coast area lists.

Cruising on winding streets overlooking the blue sea with wind blowing through your hair is so exhilarating!
We also went inside the famous Blue Grotto, ate lunch in Anacapri, and went on an incredible boat tour of Capri.
In this video, we share our incredible experience and give out tips to spend the perfect day in Capri. Consider this your Capri travel guide for an unforgettable experience!
We highly recommend you visit Capri if you’re planning a trip to Italy, especially if you’ll be near Naples or the Amalfi Coast.

CAPRI, ITALY BOAT TOUR-Featuring The Blue Grotto!
The island of Capri, Italy is a short 30 minute ferry ride from Sorrento. It's one of the most beautiful and famous islands in the world due to it's stunning topography-cliffs that fall into turquoise waters, its many grottoes (caves), its marinas filled with yachts, and of course, the famous Blue Grotto. It's also a great place to people watch and take in the spectacular views. We took a boat ride around the island and my favorites were the Green Grotto (7:56) and the Blue Grotto (9:14)!

Capri is an island located in the Tyrrhenian Sea off the Sorrentine Peninsula, on the south side of the Gulf of Naples in the Campania region of Italy. Most boat rental and charter companies on Capri are located in Marina Grande, the island's port and marina.
Blue Grotto | Most Beautiful Capri Island Tour | ITALY
The Blue Grotto is a sea cave on the coast of the island of Capri, southern Italy. Sunlight, passing through an underwater cavity and shining through the seawater, creates a blue reflection that illuminates the cavern.
Accessible by boat, this sea cave is known for its bright blue water, due to reflected sunlight.

Capri, Italy - The Best of
Capri is an island off the coast of Naples with Towering limestone cliffs
and famous Turquoise waters (with legendary blue grotto which was highlighted in the book Red Sails To Capri, by Ann Weil.
Hot resort since Roman times and in the 1950's became a top tourist destination.
AnaCapri was a favorite of French composer Claude Debussy. A quieter pace prevails where luxury hotels like the Capri Palace cater to weddings as well and spa seekers. The swimming pool has underwater glass viewing windows. The village has a pedestrian walkways which meanders between eye popping buildings and restaurants bursting with blooms like bougainvillea on steroids. There is of course pizza by the rectangle (no slices) and enormous lemons which where the pulp is used in a refreshing lemon and olive oil salad.
In the town of Capri, things get a lot busier. Fiats specially outfitted with open tops brings passengers up from Marina Grande where ferries arrive throughout the day from Sorrento and Naples.
But the biggest crowd bringer are the cruise ships which tender in thousands of passengers turning Capri into one long line like at Disneyland on the 4th of July. Troops of tourists follow paddle swinging guides through the narrow streets of Capri often causing traffic jams where the most robust tourists survive. Capri has some of the most exclusive jewelry, clothing and home assessory shops anywhere but an owner confided to me that during the time when the ships unload their passengers on the island they could close their doors and not have missed a sale. This is, for the most part, a tee shirt and gelato customer.
So how do you see Capri while avoiding the daily rush? Since the crowds usually arrive by 10:30 AM and depart by 4 PM the best strategy is to shop early or late take the funicular down when the crowds are going up the hill and go up when the crowds are coming down in the afternoon.Have lunch a little off the beaten trail.
Aurora, one of Capri's oldest restaurants. Delicious salad like one with fresh cherry tomatoes, argula and slices of Parmesan make for a great starter. The pizzas are prepared in a special oven and the super thing crusted pizza a l'aqua is made with mozzarella cheese and pepperocini spice. Its not on the menu but they'll make it for you if you ask ... and ask you should. Also try the homemade fresh sorbets.
In the evening a classic place to dine is the Quissiana Hotel and the Rendezvous Bar. Besides sushi ... they have wonderful, classic Italian dishes with a twist such as the fresh local crab, tagoltelli with summer truffles and lemon, or ravioli filled with ricotta and a spicy tomato sauce.

A romantic coastal view can be seen over the waves of the Napoli folk song Return to Sorrento, a wave of waves. At the end of this journey, it is the way to Capri Island. I am in a fast boat to Capri with many tourists from all over Sorrento harbor. Capri is the island of Naples and is located off the Sorrento peninsula. Because of the refreshing sea breeze, everyone is on the deck and am willing to enjoy the surrounding scenery. It is also good to have a sense of speed in the rapid wire. The local guide will welcome us as we arrive at the island pier for a while. His humorous actions are ideal for relieving the fatigue of tourists with the extra comfort of the Italians. At first I went on a bus tour to get to the top of the island. It is always exciting to take a bus on a small island. The steep curve road leads to the beautiful coast of the open island. The entire island is covered with volcanic lava, which is a world-class tourist destination with its warm climate and scenery. I decided to take a lift to the summit from Vittoria Square. It was pleasant to ride the lift for 10 minutes. The panoramic view of the city and the glistening clouds and blue sea spreading at the foot is attractive enough. It is finally the top of the mountain with the sun, 589 meters above sea level. The undulating blue waves and white bubbles. Beyond the sea I can see the coastline of southern Italy where I have been to. The scenery at the top of Capri Island changes from time to time because of the volatile weather. In these places, the fun of taking a self-portrait can not be missed. It's an anniversary and a trip. We went to Rome first and then decided to come to Capri. I heard this is a good place for a couple to come. So I came here. I think it's very beautiful. When I first got on the boat, it looked small, but when I got on the bus, it got bigger. It's beautiful. Suddenly the weather changes and a dreamy atmosphere is created.

Capri, Italy ( Simple Joy)
Capri is a popular tourist destination in summer for both Italians and foreigners, especially by day trippers from Naples and Sorrento. Capri is served by ferry or hydrofoil from Naples, Sorrento, Positano or Amalfi as well as by boat services from the ports of the Bay of Naples and the Sorrentine Peninsula.
The center of Capri is the Piazza. Features of the island are the Marina Piccola (the little harbour), the Belvedere of Tragara (a high panoramic promenade lined with villas), the limestone crags called sea stacks that project above the sea (the Faraglioni), the town of Anacapri, the Blue Grotto (Grotta Azzurra), and the ruins of the Imperial Roman villas.
