Solo Kayak Ha Long Bay and Cat Ba Island
Here is a longer video of our kayaking excursion in Halong Bay, Vietnam. We stayed on Cat Ba Island and walked to Ben Beo Harbor and rented them from Blue Swimmer Adventures. They included a map, dry bag, spray skirt, and life jackets. We paid a little more than what some of the other operators offered but Blue Swimmer had the best gear and kayaks, which even had rudders on them.
If you're on a tight budget or looking to experience Halong Bay on your own without having to take a cattle boat cruise this is a great alternative. We were able to get closer to the limestone karsts, paddle through sea caves, enjoy secluded beaches, and see the floating village without a guided tour.

Blue Swimmer Adventures
Why Catba & Blueswimmer
Having been traveling and guiding people for the last 15yrs in the area, I have seen how fast Halong Bay has been pursuing unsustainable development and wholesale commercial tourism. The bay is now over-used by nearly 200 mega 5-star junks, which weave everyday through the well-worn mass tourism routes of the once emerald waters of the Tonkin Gulf. However, in the far southern end of Halong Bay, the forgotten National Park island of Cat Ba is awakening. With its sleepy Lan Ha Bay and a multitude of beaches, caves and jungle terrains, the island is starting to change but still remains largely wild and untouched.
So we at BlueSwimmer Adventure decided to pursue low-impact eco-tourism to try and do our bit to keep the island's very special purity as long as possible by offering more green outdoor activities for nature lovers from around the world.
Sometimes when travelling, you can feel like there's nothing you can do to stop the environmental destruction going on around you. It feels all too hard and you don't believe anything you will do will really matter or change anything. But eco-tourism in itself is a very new concept in Vietnam that needs your support to convince the authorities and other mega tourism operators that there is an alternative to McDonalds-style tourism. Once people see the value in our environment, they will do more to protect it, and that's where you can make a difference.
I believe low-impact eco-tourism has the power to change the mindsets of business people greedily pursuing profits at any cost. I believe we can all make a difference and I invite you to join BlueSwimmer Adventures in spreading the word in northern Vietnam.
Our Green Activities
The Blueswimmer team try and do our best to help preserve the magic of Cat Ba and surrounding areas.
All our activities are as carbon neutral as you can get, with your own body power propelling you through sea, jungles or up cliff faces. Kayaking, sailing, climbing and mountain biking - great for the environment and a hell of a lot of fun!
We only use our engines on the boats in case of calm sea, timing, emergency or customer's demand such as power on boat.
We compost all our organic waste and use that yummy compost in our BlueSwimmer veggie garden. Those yummy veggies and herbs then get used in our trip meals.
We minimise the amount of packaging on everything we purchase.
We recycle all our bottles, cans, paper etc.
We use electronic formats rather printing fancy brochures or posting out advertisements, saving heaps of trees in the process.
We welcome any ideas for future action from forward-thinking, conciousness folk who have a love for the environment and a passion for adventure. If we don't have what you want, or there's something you've always wanted to do and need some help or advice, contact us and we'll reply as soon as we can.

Cat Dua (đảo Cát Dứa) Pineapple island or often known as Monkey Island is located in the area of Nam Cat, Lan Ha Bay. To get to this island, you’ll go to Beo harbor, hire a boat to go to Monkey Island. It only takes you 15 minutes before the pristine, beautiful island appear in front of your eyes.
Monkey island is about 5 km round with the front side are 2 sandy beaches and the back side is like rocky mountain. The beaches here are very beautiful with pine apple trees on the beach and many kind of green trees on the mountain.
The most unique feature of the island are the monkeys – there are about 20 individuals living on the island’s forest. When the tourists come, the monkey come down and get close in order to get food. You can feed them but it’s not wise to tease or bother them because they do bite and fight back.
Monkey Island is one of the appealing tourist addresses tourists should not miss in Cat Ba Island. It takes about 10 minutes for tourists to set foot on the island by boat from Beo wharf through Cai Beo fishing village and some small islands. Almost all of cruises and tourist ships have stopped here in order that tourists have an opportunity to admire the masterpieces that nature has bestowed Cat Ba. The island was formerly known as Cat Dua Island because there are the great number of luxuriant high pandanus shading around. The fruits of pandanus here looks fairly good, yet they are not edible. The fishermen here usually pick them up for drenching or drying as medicines. Cat Dua Island is also an ideal rendezvous for swimming with blue water and white sandy shores formed from coral debris. Cat Dua Island today is call Monkey Island by the locals here thanks to the presence of several dozen of monkeys. Almost all of monkeys in Cat Dua are brought here for living by the rangers. They are thus quite bold with the locals and tourists. They even seize food right from tourists' hands and might bite if provoked. However, it is the untouched uniqueness that makes the island become famous alluring the large number of tourists in Cat Ba tours. Discovering Monkey Island is definitely one of the most unforgettable things to do in Cat Ba.
Monkey Island retains the perimeter of about 3 km. It owns mountain shape with the sandbank formed over millions of years. The wave and wind have brought the sand, rocks, coral and all shells of sea creatures such as seashells, shrimps, and crabs... to the foot of the mountain creating the sand stretching for miles. Monkey Island Cat Ba is home to 2 arc-shaped beaches, namely Cat Dua 1 Beach and Cat Dua 2 Beach. This is an ideal venue for swimming for tourists when participating in Cat Ba tour thanks to its extremely blue and fresh water. In particular, the bungalows here are the ideal choice for tourists to comfortably admire the sea breeze and enjoy sea flavor. Monkey Island also offers services for tourists' demands such as bathing suit renting, buoys or kayaks... Monkey Island deserves one of captivating tourist Cat Ba attractions for tourists who love to discover charming scenery.
Cat Dua 2 Beach is situated behind the tiger-shaped ledge on the right. The beach retains a several hundred square meter large garden with the large number of unique plants and different types of birds. Going to Monkey Island, the majority of tourists who are interested in exploring strange feelings can climb halfway up the mountain, even up to the mountain top for admiring the stunning panoramic view of Lan Ha Bay with hundreds of multi-sized islands growing up on blue water along with white sandy shores from afar.
Thanks to the beautiful unspoiled natural scenery along with wonderful beaches, Monkey Island Cat Ba has become a highlight of Cat Ba travel. It is also the first stop of the tourist route on Lan Ha Bay alluring both domestic and international tourists.
Discovering Monkey Island is definitely one of the most unforgettable things to do in Cat Ba.

Deep in Vietnam - Exploring Colossal Caves
Vietnam is home to the planet's largest cave, Hang Son Doong. The country's limestone mountain terrain has been carved away by underground rivers for millions of years. The areas around Phong Nha and Tam Coc have cave experiences for everyone regardless of budget, ability, or experience level.
We explored the more kid-friendly caves but the experience has left us wanting more. I expect we will return when the girls are older to visit caves that require multi-day treks.
Check out our next video where we continue our journey. We're heading to the island paradise of Phu Quoc Island in South Vietnam!!
