Sailing the Mediterranean Sea - Travelling West to East - Best Videos Highlights of 2019 pt01 #059
Some of the highlights from our 2019 blogs. Traveling from Spain to Turkey in 2019. We sailed quite far this year and visited many interesting places so we've had to split this retrospective into two parts, so watch out for #60 Best of the Blogs pt 02 - in the other direction - East to West!
Even though we've tried to included the most interesting, popular and personal bits of life aboard our boat in 2019, it's impossible to include everything. We each had our own personal favourite moments. The kids favourite bits were meeting up with other kids, but YouTube's family unfriendly policy means we unfortunately haven't included much of that - shame. For Dad, the most 'interesting' moments were maintenance related, but for most people that's just boring, so they've been left out too.. but look out for new dedicated maintenance blogs in the new year!
PLEASE NOTE: YouTube have disabled comments on most of our video blogs (and on other family channels) due to safeguarding issues regarding minors on the YouTube platform. In response, we have enabled comments for these videos on our Facebook page and Patreon page and begun a monthly blogspot called: 'FROM THE COCKPIT' where we respond to comments questions and issues relating to travel and sailing with kids.. and live-aboard life in general.

To the less tolerant folks of that great south land: This may make you happy, you might think it’s grand. I’ve gone back to where I came from, and I’m staying here, at least thats the plan. Call it my motherland voyage, reverse migration. Of all the things calling me back to this small island nation the most apt may simply be self investigation. Who am I, what am I and where do I belong. Can I learn the local lingo, shall I sing the sacred songs? For the longest time I wondered what it would feel like to lose all sight of land. Be completely surrounded by deep blue ocean. Immersed. Having nearly drowned as a child, I didn’t have the best relationship with the sea. Yet there was this determination to travel that way. At just three weeks young I was first cradled into the sky. Off to family relations from my birthplace of Dubai. Not long after we settled in Sydney, Australia. We were fleeing stolen status, not war or threatening behaviour. Regular family holidays gave temporary tastes of my motherland. The smells, sights and sounds seeded a strong desire to stay in Sri Lanka.Eldest child of first generation migrants, raised in a relatively intolerant scene. But slowly you rise above and follow your dreams. A simple seasonal life with rewarding choices. Flourishing under poverty lines, stories sung - many voices. For over 5 years I’ve been housed by people just like you, social accommodation, mutual exchange with shared views. Then it came time for the journey of a lifetime, departing Australian shores no liferaft, no lifeline. The feeling was surprisingly calm, with no land in sight. The intense part was the the two-man small boat struggle and it played out like a slow psychological torture. Stuck in that small space for 9 days, running low on fuel and drinking water. That immense challenge I wish not to repeat.Searching, searching, overland on my own steam. Could it really be such a mission to realise this dream? Looking for a ride, taking failure in my stride. I had vision, a calling and it wasn’t about the money. A six hour flight will always cost less than 6 months travelling the old way. Although I lived very cheaply on the road: the trip took twice as long as my longest estimate so my savings were significantly sliced.Eventually I departed Thailand on Sailing Vessel, Blue Star with a stellar captain and crew. The final passage was dreamy beyond belief. 11 days with fabulous food, singing songs to the seas, dancing with dolphins and sleeping on deck in the breeze. Befriending fisherman and swapping supplies. Reading books, writing songs and sailing into endless skies. In my three months here I’ve searched, researched, travelled and connected with amazing teachers who can guide me with my Classical vocal studies, Language Lessons and Hatha Yoga Practice. I’ve been in very a vulnerable space slowly finding out what it is to dress, behave and speak like a Sri Lankan. I’m learning my peoples language for the first time as an adult. I’ve begun some of my classes and the savings are trickling down. I filled up the tanks in Australia performing, teaching and doing what I love. I’ve sailed into the port, secured my provisions, found my sources. Can you help me refuel?

Exploring Phi Phi Islands! | Sailing Thailand, Ep 160
Exploring one of the busiest tourist areas in the world! The Phi Phi islands.
In this episode of Sailing Nandji, after spending 5 months in remote Indonesia, returning to Thailand we thought we wanted to do the normal tourist stuff, so we motor sailed Nandji the 20nm across to the infamous Phi Phi islands. This place is crazy busy with boats and tourists as thousands of tourists every day frequent the island. With hundreds of loud long boats roaring past Nandji, we decide to join the pack and hire our very own long boat captain for the day and head out on an excursion around the islands. This romanitc idea was more stressful than anticipated as we have near misses, boat collisions, get stuck on a rock and then have choppy seas on the way home... A real Thailand adventure!
With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off sailing to the Pacific! We have since cruised through New Caledonia, Vanuatu, the Solomon islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and then onto the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the years to come. With a new engine, we continued onto Thailand, then back down into Indonesia and specifically West Sumatra to live the island life and chase the surf. With our Sailing plans changing, we have returned to Thailand to wait for the weather and begin our journey to the northern route of the Indian Ocean to Sri Lanka before heading south to Chagos and across the Indian Ocean once cyclone season has finished and the trade winds begin! The adventure is just beginning as we plan to sail our Nandji around the world!!
We departed the east coast of Australia in July 2017 and have since sailed over 10000nm. We have explored some amazing countries and met some beautiful people along the way. We have experienced so many different and diverse cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our lives doing it! The adventure is just beginning as we sail West with the trades around the World!
