Whale Watching in Mirissa, Sri Lanka // WE SAW A BLUE WHALE!
Whale watching in Mirissa was by far one of the most incredible activities I did while in Sri Lanka.
I've done whale watching in South Africa before but this trip was much better as we saw SO MANY WHALES! From pilot whales to two massive blue whales, biggest mammals on earth, even bigger than our boat. It was a truly exciting whale watching trip and is also super cheap at only $30 per person.

Many pygmy blue whales can be seen at Dondra point in Sri Lanka. You can access it through the Mirissa Harbour or Weligama Harbour. Whale watching tours can be arranged via many in Sri Lanka.

Snorkelling with a blue whale in Mirissa, Sri Lanka
Blue Whale Watching Mirissa, Sri Lanka
In January 2011 we set sail to find the planets largest animal: the bluewhale.
We travel to Sri Lanka and go on board the vessel Queen of the Bluewhale in the little fishing harbour of Mirissa in the south of Sri Lanka. We have a great trip with Captn Raya, who is a former fisherman. By organizing whale watching tours, he turned into an enviromentalist. He explains the ecology of whales and why he is doing this job.
We encounter a school of dolphins and two bluewhales.
We recommend this tour as ecology and whale-friendly trip.
Blue Whale Spotting in Mirissa, Sri Lanka
While in Sri Lanka, I headed to Mirissa to go on a boat trip to try and spot Blue Whales.
We went with a company named 'Raja and the Whales' and they didn't disappoint!

Blue whales off the coast of Mirissa, Sri Lanka
While staying in the beautiful, palm-fringed beach hamlet of Mirissa, on Sri Lanka's south-west coast, I filmed a few typical scenes around town and did what everyone who visits Mirissa does - go on a whale and dolphin watching tour. I did it with Mahinda from Mirissa Bay Watching (also called Mahinda & The Whales). They say Mirissa is the best place in the world to see blue whales, as they are there year-round and not far out to sea. We also saw a humpback whale, a Bryde's whale cow with her calf, two turtles, heaps of flying fish and hundreds of spinner dolphins spiralling out of the water. A great trip!
