Alberta Light :: Neel de Wit-Wibaut at Bluerock Gallery May 4th-28th, 2012
We hope hope you will join us for the OPENING RECEPTION of ALBERTA LIGHT from 2-5pm on Saturday, May 5th, 2012. Neel will be in attendance, and refreshments will be served.
This short video introduces you to Neel de Wit-Wibaut, a painter and musician living and working in Calgary and the Alberta foothills. Shot on location at Neel's remote cabin where she has been painting faithfully for decades, Neel speaks about her love of nature and the magic of light. Working primarily in oils on wood, her subjects are inspired moments of illumination—sunlight, moonlight and the colors in shadows. This retrospective (held at Bluerock Gallery in Black Diamond, Alberta, Canada May 4th to 28th, 2012) of Neel's remarkable career is also a tribute to her adopted Alberta foothills. Still painting at the age of 97, she is deeply inspiring.
Video created by Shelley Whitehead for Bluerock Gallery. Special thanks to Mady Thiel-Kopstein, Karen Gimbel, Marika d'Ailly, Sandra Wiebe and Anna Carnell. The still photos of Neel's paintings are courtesy of Edith Vanderkloot.
Want to know more about Neel? We invite you to read Hope in the Color of Orange: Dutch Civilian Memories of War and Liberation. In one of the chapters of this book, Neel tells her story about being a wife and mother during WWII in Holland. This independently published book is available for purchase online at Bluerock Gallery in Black Diamond, Alberta available here:

Mady Thiel-Kopstein, Crys Harse & Linda Chow:: Spirit of the Sheep:: at Bluerock Gallery
Spirit of the Sheep | Mady Thiel-Kopstein, Crys Harse & Linda Chow
November 23 -- December 15, 2013
Closing Reception Saturday, December 14, 3pm -- 5pm
There's a certain, welcome challenge to three artists in different media -- a painter, a metalsmith, and a goldsmith — working together on an exhibition, and in some ways, our diversity echoes that of the Sheep River Valley. This is a show about art, landscape, science, and history, brought together, as we were, by the Spirit of the Sheep.
Linda Chow lives in the city of Calgary but is drawn to the prairies and their disappearing landmarks: grain elevators, barns, old churches. A visitor to the Sheep Valley, she now turns to portraying the flora, fauna, and towns along the river.
Crys Harse has spent much of her life wandering around the foothills from a farm in the catchment area of Sheep, and her work reflects the diversity of the wild plants and animals, as well as the land, the sky, and the waters of the river itself.
Mady Thiel-Kopstein lives on the river and can see it from her window. She spends her time hiking and skiing along the upper reaches of the Sheep, taking the photographs that serve as the inspiration for her paintings of that landscape and the feelings it evokes.
Many rivers flow throughout Canada, but we've chosen to focus on the Sheep because it's ours. Still, we hope that those who see this exhibition may connect, through it, not only to the Spirit of the Sheep, but to the rivers in their own backyards.

Artists of Bluerock Gallery | Meet Dirk van Wyk
Art can broadly vary in definitions depending on the relationship of the individual discussing it. To Dirk van Wyk, creator under various mediums, art represents a deeper meaning than to most.
“I mistrust the word art,” said Dirk.
“I believe that art is not a noun, but a qualifier.
“Art is owned by each person and so what they call art is art to them.
“I think we have lost a standard which was art, which was a cultural value that people attained to, or recognized and applauded. I think this has fallen apart, or disappeared.
