Trekking in Ireland: The Bluestack Mountains Traverse, County Donegal
This 34 km east to west route across the remote Bluestack Mountains has over 1,700 metres of ascent and takes in 13 summits, including Croaghgorm, the highest point in the range. We did it over 2 days, bivvying out overnight at the summit of Croaghbane. The route we took starts from the Barnsmore Gap road where we were dropped off by a taxi, hired in Glenties. We arranged for the same taxi to collect us from a picnic area at the end of a boreen in the Owenroe valley the next day. On a clear day from the Bluestacks, the scenery over the Province of Ulster is fantastic, rewarding the walker with spectacular vistas and sweeping panoramas.
There is little foot-fall on these mountains and almost no visible tracks to follow; it is impossible to move quickly over the terrain. A maze of peat hags are encountered in some of the valley bottoms and steep gullies require careful scrambling. In one gully below Croaghgorm, is the wreckage of a WW2 aircraft that crashed in 1944 claiming 7 lives.
We tackled this route on probably the hottest days of the year so far. The heat and very high humidity meant that it was important to remain well hydrated. Fortunately, numerous loughs en route provided ample drinking water, but it had to be sterilised first. We used a UV Steripen. The bog flora is abundant: species include bog cotton, bogbean, bog asphodel and sundew. Fauna spotted included skylarks, grouse, golden plover and a fledgling meadow pipit. But less pleasing were the swarms of midges and horseflies making the application of DEET an absolute necessity in summer!

Trekking in Ireland: Seven Summits in the Cooley Mountains
A trek of over 17 km across the Cooley Mountains in Co. Louth, Ireland, taking in 7 summits. The route we followed traverses a landscape replete with legend and megalithic monuments. It overlooks the impressive Carlingford fjord, and is opposite the mighty Mourne Mountains that really do 'sweep down to the sea' from this vantage point.
Donegal - Errigal Mountain
A walk on Errigal Mountain, Donegal, Ireland. This hillwalk climbs Mount Errigal from the north with near guaranteed solitude and more challenge than the usual approach. Starting at Procklis Lough and following an old bog road brings the imposing northern scree slopes with a fantastic scramble and stunning views. Clambering through a window of rock and following precarious paths on the way to suddenly appear on the summit from a direction which may leave others wondering? Descent along the normal path, climbing Macknoght, descending to the beautiful Atlan Lough and following its shore back to Procklis Lough. A stunningly beautiful walk in one of the most beautiful parts of Ireland.

Errigal: Donegal (hiking guide and interesting mythology) 2017
Errigal, the highest mountain in Donegal stands at 751m/2464ft. Myth, legend, murder, and revenge the county of Donegal has it all woven into the fabric of its mythology. On this hike up Errigal, I'll be talking about the Fomorian king Balor who is said to have lived in nearby Tory Island and his battles with the Tuatha de Danann. This cycle of Irish history is fascinating and I'll hopefully give you a taster so you'll want more.
I've included the route we took as part of the hiking guide and some recommendations along the way.
So please, sit back enjoy and feel free to comment, subscribe and like if you wish.
We climbed and this was the 4th mountain of the 8 peak mountain challenge where we are trying to tackle mental health issues and smash the stigma attached.

The International Appalachian Trail of the Republic of Ireland in 120 seconds
This is a short video montage of photographs I took during my trek along the International Appalachian Trail in the Republic of Ireland. On April 29, 2011 I became the first person to thru-hike the new International Appalachian Trail (IAT) route in Ireland. The trail travels 119km across Co. Donegal and traverses through some of the most spectacular scenery in Ireland. I began at the Bunglass car park along the Atlantic Ocean and finished at Kelly's Bridge at the Northern Ireland Border.
Some of the highlights include: climbing The Eagle's Nest below Slieve Leauge, coastal path section towards Port, the Maghera Strand, footpath beside Owenea River, the Bluestack Mountains, Lough Eske and the many small towns.
The rugged beauty of the area combined with the hospitable locals makes this one of my favorite treks I've ever done.
Later this summer I plan to produce a 3-4 minute video about the IAT in Ireland. Check back then to watch the video.

barnesmore gap phantom 4 30/04/2018
The road northwards from Donegal Town through Barnesmore Gap in the Bluestack mountains is one of the great scenic routes in Ireland.
Bearnas Mor, the Big Gap was created by a glacier, which carved a wide, deep valley in the mountain range. This highway has always been of strategic importance as a geographic link between the north and south of the county.
The Gap, as it is known locally, has associations with St Patrick, who travelled across it on his first missionary journey through Connaught and Ulster. He had gone as far as Convoy, when, according to tradition, the wheel of his chariot broke twice. This event led the saint to conclude that it was a sign that his ministrations were unnecessary, predicting that the illustrious St. Colmcille would be born from the lineage of the ruling family, the Conall Gulban.

The Sheeffry Seven, a Hill walk in County Mayo, Ireland
This 27 km hill-walk across County Mayo's Sheeffry Hills takes in 7 summits: Tawnyard, Tievummera, Barrclashcame, Barrclashcame North-West Top, Tievnabinnia, Tievnabinnia East Top and Tawny Rower. It is one of the finest treks in Ireland, offering benign walking terrain and fabulous 360 degree views of Achill Island, Clew Bay, Croagh Patrick, the Nephin Begs, Devilsmother, the Maamturks, the Twelve Bens, Ben Gorm, Mweelrea and Doo Lough. Although a relatively easy and straightforward walk in good weather, be warned: this route is challenging and dangerous in places in poor visibility.
