Britain's Illegal Rave Renaissance: LOCKED OFF
Rave Culture is one of Britain’s great cultural exports, but after its first wave in the late eighties and early nineties, it was soon forced into the underground by stringent new laws and superclubs. But forward 25 years into in the midst of a nationwide purge on the nation’s nightlife, where nearly half of all British clubs have shut down in the last decade, and a new kind of scene has emerged.
Clive Martin investigates this 21st century version of Rave, where young people break into disused spaces with the help of bolt-cutters and complicated squatting laws, to suck on balloons and go hard into the early morning.
But with the police using increasingly extreme tactics to clamp down on these parties, and more than one fatality causing nationwide media panic, can the scene survive?

La Plaza Cultural-Armando Perez GreenThumb Public Garden in NYC
Green Thumb Public Gardens were established in 1978, GreenThumb remains the nation's largest urban gardening program, assisting over 600 gardens and nearly 20,000 garden members throughout New York City. Our aim is to foster civic participation and encourage neighborhood revitalization while preserving open space.
Community gardens provide green space and easily accessible recreational opportunities in the areas that need them most. GreenThumb was initiated in response to the city's financial crisis of the 1970s, which resulted in the abandonment of a tremendous amount of public and private land. Residents of these devastated communities transformed these unattractive and unsafe spaces into green havens.
The majority of GreenThumb gardens were derelict vacant lots renovated by volunteers. These community gardens, now managed by neighborhood residents, provide important green space, thus improving air quality, bio-diversity, and the well-being of residents. But gardens aren't just pretty spaces; they're also important community resources.
All GreenThumb gardens offer public programs that improve quality of life for residents of all ages. So gardens may offer educational workshops, children's programs, food pantries, or community-building events like block parties. Active garden sites create a stable force in the community that serve as anchors for area re-development initiatives, while making the city safer, healthier, and cleaner.
All GreenThumb gardens are open to the public a minimum of ten (10) hours per week, so visit one of these amazing spaces to see what's growing on!

Devon 2015 - Part 23: Stone Lane Gardens / Chagford

Artifishal Full Film | The Fight to Save Wild Salmon
Artifishal is a film about people, rivers, and the fight for the future of wild fish and the environment that supports them. It explores wild salmon’s slide toward extinction, threats posed by fish hatcheries and fish farms, and our continued loss of faith in nature.
Thanks for watching our film, and for your comments -- our primary goal with the film was to shine a spotlight on these issues, to spark dialogue and encourage changes in the way we think about river and fish conservation and fishery management. The common ground we all seem to share is a love of rivers and an interest in seeing wild fish return in greater abundance. Patagonia has been working to protect wild rivers and wild fish for over 40 years. We were founded by an avid fly fisherman – and we’re proud of all our connections to the fish world, which range from our fly fishing and salmon product lines, to the over $20 million in grants we’ve given to local groups working on these issues in communities around the world.
To that end, whatever your point of view, we hope you visit Patagonia Action Works, to learn more about and support groups working to protect wild rivers and wild fish -
Further, this is the 3rd film we’ve made about these issues. First was Damnation, which highlights the destructive effect of obsolete dams on healthy river ecosystems and habitat; and then, Blue Heart of Europe, which shares the shocking story of a tsunami of dam development in the Balkans region of Eastern Europe, and calls for a stop to the construction of 3,000 new hydropower dams and diversions. We couldn’t agree more that habitat destruction, dam building, mismanaged harvest, and pollution of our waterways are also incredibly important issues – check out these films to get a sense for some of our advocacy across the issues.

The Witless Bay Ecological Reserve is comprised of four islands off Newfoundland's extreme eastern coast. The sheer cliffs and rocky outcrops of the tiny islands make them ideal landing and nesting sites for two million seabirds. The MOST BEAUTIFUL place in Mexico
We've traveled all over Mexico but Bacalar, a Pueblo Mágico, might be the most beautiful place we've seen yet!
►Learn Spanish like us:
It was basically love at first sight when we arrived in Bacalar. The lagoon of 7 colors stole our hearts immediately. The crystal clear waters of Bacalar Lagoon were so beautiful and refreshing. We spent 5 days in this Pueblo Mágico at an Airbnb right on the lagoon. Although it wasn't ideal to share an outdoor bathroom and shower here, we loved having direct access to the lagoon. We went kayaking any chance we got—Laska even came too and she had the time of her life!
During our stay in Bacalar, we also found some incredible food at local restaurants, took a sunrise paddleboarding tour, and went to the Fort of San Felipe. There's not a whole lot going on in the town of Bacalar, but that didn't bother us. We could hardly keep ourselves from swimming, kayaking, and paddleboarding on the lagoon.
------OUR MINI GUIDE TO BACALAR, QUINTANA ROO------
WHERE TO STAY IN BACALAR
1. You will likely find the most affordable rental options on Airbnb. If you're new to Airbnb, you can save $40 when you sign up with our link. We'll get a $20 credit.
WHERE TO EAT IN BACALAR
1. La Playita - this restaurant sits right on Bacalar Lagoon. You can sit under the canopy of the giant tree on the property at one of the many tables with a view of the waters. The food and drinks are incredible! You can also snap some pictures out on the dock. It's especially pretty at sunset.
2. La Piña - This restaurant was our go-to spot for breakfast. They make some flavor-packed breakfast dishes that are crave-worthy! We recommend trying one their Smoothies Borrachos which have perfect combinations of fruit and a bit of liquor.
3. Mango & Chile - You'll find this restaurant right next to the Fort of San Felipe near the center of town. They make some great lattes and have allergy-friendly options.
4. El Manatí - We enjoyed eating our breakfast here because they have a lush outdoor garden area. The coffee was very tasty, too!
WHAT TO DO IN BACALAR
1. Sunrise Paddle Boarding - We had an unforgettable time on Antonio's tour. He took us out before the sun came up so we could see it rise over the lagoon. Later on, we got to see Cenote Esmerelda and Cenote Negro. Before going back, we enjoyed some snacks while floating on our paddle boards in shallow lagoon waters. It was an all-around 5-star experience. Book his tour here:
2. Kayaking - You can rent kayaks all over the lagoon and it's a great way to explore more of the lagoon. It's so different depending on where you are!
3. See cenotes - If you don't take Antonio's tour (above) we think it's worthwhile to see the two cenotes that are in (yes, IN) Bacalar Lagoon. Before this, we'd never experienced anything like that before.
4. Visit the Fort of San Felipe - Located near the town center, the fort was used to watch for pirates that tried to invade Bacalar many years ago. It costs ~100 pesos for foreigners and 50 pesos for Mexicans.
5. There are SO many more things to do in Bacalar that we didn't get to experience since we only had 5 days there. We recommend going out and exploring some on your own to find other things you'd enjoy doing.
