STORYLINE
Rescue efforts to locate missing passengers and crew on board a stricken cruise liner which ran aground off the Tuscan coast have been suspended due to bad weather.
Costa Crociere chairman and CEO Pier Luigi Foschi said rescue attempts had been halted not because the ship had shifted, but because divers heard sounds coming from inside the Costa Concordia and didn't know what was causing them.
At least six people died after the cruise liner ran into a reef on Friday night and over turned onto its side in the port area of Giglio, sparking a frantic evacuation of the 4,200 people onboard.
Sixteen remain missing.
Coast Guard officials have expressed concern that the ship might slip off the rocks where it is currently perched.
There are 500-thousand gallons of fuel on board, in 17 separate tanks, Foschi said.
Foschi has blamed the accident on the ship's captain, Francesco Schettino, for making an unauthorised and unapproved deviation from the programmed course.
Schettino is under investigation by authorities for suspected manslaughter, as well as allegations he abandoned ship before the passengers were safe, violating the Italian navigation code.
