View of Pikeville, Kentucky
Pike County, Kentucky. This overlook is located at Bob Amos Park, in the town of Pikeville, Kentucky.
The cut through project officially began November 1973 and was completed 14 years later at a cost of $80 million. The project created a 3/4 mile channel through Peach Orchard Mountain, in order to provide a path for railroad tracks, the Levisa Fork of the Big Sandy River, and U.S. Highways 23, 460 119 and Ky 80.
During Phase 1 Approximately 13 million cubic yards of rock were blasted from Peach Orchard Mountain at a cost of 17 million dollars. When the excavation was completed, a channel was created for the Levisa Fork, allowing the river to by-pass Pikeville. Space was also provided for the railroad and a four-lane highway.
The second phase began March 4, 1980 and completed December 1982. During this phase, on September 17, 1980, the Levisa Fork of the Big Sandy River was turned to flow through the cut-through. This portion of the project relocated the railroad and coal tipples, diverted the river through the cut through and moved 5 million cubic yeard of dirt to fill the now dry river bed channel.
The last two phases began March, 15, 1983. This involved completion of highway interchanges on both ends of the cut-through and the construction of Humbley Boulevard along the former railroad bed. An additional 150 acres of usuable land resulted from these final phases.
A total of 18 million cubic yards of earth were moved during the entire project which filled the empty river bed, creating 400 acres of usuable land for the city's expansion.
The Pikeville Cut-Through is an engineering marvel and a unique example of cooperation among agencies on a federal, state and local level. It is one of the country's largest and most spectacular engineering feats. The cut itself is over 1300 feet wide, 3700 feet long and 523 feet deep. The New York Times called it the eighth wonder of the world.
The Cut-Through Project has freed Pikeville from the floods, dust and other restrictions that plague so many other eastern Kentucky counties. the net result is a very livable town recently included in the 100 Best Small Towns in America.

Rock Formations at Bob Amos Park
Bob Amos Park, Town of Pikeville, Pike County, Kentucky. We hiked the non circular 2.5 mile Mountain Bike Trail for an out and back total of 5 miles. This trail includes easy, moderate and steep grades. It's a nice trail for exercising and there are several nice rock formations along the trail and a few off of the trail. I managed to film a couple of them.
Driving through Pikeville, Kentucky on US 23
The Pikeville Cut-Through is a rock cut in Pikeville, Kentucky, United States created by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, through which passes a four-lane divided highway (Corridor B, numbered as US 23, US 119, US 460, and KY 80), a railroad line (CSX Big Sandy Subdivision), and the Levisa Fork of the Big Sandy River. It is one of the largest civil engineering projects in the western hemisphere, moving nearly 18,000,000 cubic yards of soil and rock, compared to the Big Dig (15 million cubic yards) and the Panama Canal (240 million cubic yards). Dr. William Hambley, who served as mayor of Pikeville for 29 years, Robert H. Holcomb, Chamber of Commerce president, and Henry Stratton, local attorney, spearheaded the project.
The Pikeville Cut-Through is 1,300 feet (400 m) wide, 3,700 feet (1.1 km) long, and is 523 feet (159 m) deep. The project was completed in 1987 following 14 years of work at a cost of $77.6 million $164 million in 2016 dollars

Pikeville: The Fall Snowstorm of 2009 - Houston's inconvenient snow
This is a drive through Pikeville's cut-through project yesterday morning.
We got a significant amount of snow, as did Houston, TX. Theirs was the earliest in recorded history and according to the Houston Chronicle it wreaked havoc. Last year here in Pikeville we had our first snowstorm in October. Then, we had the Summer that wasn't where it only reached 90 in NYC once. Then, we had what the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration certified as the third coldest October in recorded history. Then Climate breaks out and we learn that the top United Nation Climatologists have been fudging the numbers, manipulating the peer review process, and evading Freedom of Information Requests. Now we have the earliest recorded snow in a city on the shores of the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico. This year's snow breaks the earlier record by 5 days. That record was set in... Wait for it... 2008. Did I mention that Houston is south of Gulf Shores, AL and Pennsecola, FL?
By the way, the Pikeville Cut-through project is similar to mountain top development. The riverfill in Pikeville has provided much needed land for Pikeville and has significantly benefitted our community. The East KY Expo Center is on it as is the Pikeville College baseball fields, the Big Sandy Technical College, the courthouse, the Riverfill 10 cinemas, McDonalds and more. The project also provided low income housing at Pike Villa, Bob Amos Park, the YMCA, RV Park, the Pikeville Pond and many more. It has also helped control flooding that has devestated Appalachian cities for decades.
The lower portion of my back yard is riverfill. If anybody tells you that moving mountains leaves behind a toxic wasteland that nothing can live on they are lying to you. Period.

Women's Tennis at Pikeville College
The Pikeville College community is excited to bring tennis back to campus in the spring of 2012 after a brief sabbatical. The tennis teams will be coached by longtime tennis standout Tim Alderman, and will play at the recently-upgraded tennis facility at Bob Amos Park.
Bear's tennis has had a lot of success in the past. Some 10 years ago John Kitchen led the Bears to the national semifinals in Peachtree City, Ga., and one year later, Rodrigo Puebla guised the women's tennis program to the national quarterfinals at Peachtree City. Pikeville will play in the always-competitive Mid-South Conference in an attempt to qualify for the NAIA national tournaments, held each May at top tennis academies around the country.

Elvis Presley - Promised Land
Elvis Presley's Promised Land
***LYRICS***
A great song with a fairly good video to back it up
I left my home in Norfolk Virginia
California on my mind
I straddled that Greyhound
And rode into Raleigh
And on across Caroline
We had motor trouble that turned into a struggle
Halfway across Alabam'
And that hound broke down and left us all stranded
In downtown Birmingham
Right away I brought me a through train ticket
Ridin' across Mississippi clean
And I was on that midnight flyer out of Birmingham
Smoking into New Orleans
Somebody help me get out of Louisiana
Just to help me get to Houston Town
There are people there who care a little about me
And they won't let the poor boy down
Sure as she bore me, she bought me a silk suit
Put luggage in my hand
And I woke up high over Alburquerque
On a jet to the promised land
Working on a T-bone steak a la carte
Flying over to the golden state
Ah when the pilot told us in thirteen minutes
He would set us at the terminal gate
Swing low chariot come down easy
Taxi to the terminal zone
Cut your engines and cool your wings
And let me make it to the telephone
Los Angeles give me Norfolk Virginia
Tidewater four ten o nine
Tell the folks back home this is the promised land calling
And the poor boy is on the line
