Copalita, Copalitlan derives from the Nahuatl Word meaning ¨Place of Copal¨or ¨Place where Copal trees grow¨Copalita was occupied by the Mixtec and Zapotec cultures.
The Eco-Archaeological Park extends over an área of 200.50 acres, presents a great diversity of ecosystems and a high cultural interest due to the existence of pre-hispanic constructions, in which the National Institute of Anthropogy and History develops rescue work, supported by the National Fund for Tourism Development.
1500 year ago, when Monte Alban was consolidated as an urban center in the central valleys of Oaxaca, here at the mouth of the river was Copalita, a town that had already a writing and a calendar system as well as a complex political, socio-economic and religious organization.
The construction with cultural significance is the ¨Ball Game¨with its huge stones with low engraved, which is the only one found so far in the región of Costa de Oaxaca, it is as old as 2000 years, Copalita also contain other constructions, the Great Temple, and the Serpen Temple, the archaeological site, which extends for almost half a mile, is rich with ancient history, just waiting to be discovered.
The view from cliffs will transport you to be in contact with Mother Earth, the feeling of watching the junction of spring wáter and the ocean, is reinforced by the spectacular scenery, the birds chirping and sea foam and the ocean immensity will make you wonder of mysteries of the past.
