Jedes Weinanbaugebiet hat seinen Magier, eine Persönlichkeit, die den Stil der Weine einer Region entscheidend prägt. Im Toro D.O. ist dies zweifelsohne Manuel Fariña. Mit viel Weitsicht begann er in den späten Siebzigerjahren die enormen Vorzüge der einheimischen Rebsorte Tinta de Toro zu propagieren. Obwohl einige Winzer mit internationalen Rebsorten liebäugelten, um aus der Krise zu finden, sollte für ihn auch in Zukunft die Tinta de Toro die Hauptsorte bleiben. Der Vater der Toro-Weine, wie wir sie heute kennen, war schon in seiner Jugend von dieser Rebsorte überzeugt. Er widmete ihr nicht zuletzt als Präsident des Kontrollrates als erster die notwendige Zeit, um die Möglichkeiten aus der völligverkannten kastilischen Rebsorte herauszuschälen, ein Potenzial, das es ihm und
allen anderen heute ermöglicht, die wunderbar charaktervollen Toro-Weine zu
keltern. «Zwar ist die Rebsorte Tinta de Toro genetisch mit der viel bekannteren
Tempranillo-Rebe identisch. Sie hat sich aber über die vielen Jahrhunderte hier
im Toro an die hiesigen Verhältnisse angepasst. Gepaart mit dem Terroir, lässt
sie dickschalige, kleinbeerige Trauben heranwachsen, die extraktreichere Weine
mit viel Aroma, Farbe und Gehalt ergeben», weiss er über den Lokalmatador
zu berichten. Manuel Fariña leitete eine eigentliche Qualitätsrevolution ein und
fungierte als eigentlicher Motor für die Anerkennung der Herkunftsbezeichnung
Toro D.O.

This is the oldest family owned winery in Toro started in 1942 and the father, Manuel Farina who is the founding father of modern Toro is 72 today and he is still in control of operations but the third generation is in place and ready to take over. Manuel is an advocate of softer and easier style of wines in Toro. This producer has two wineries, one in Toro and then a Tierra de Castillon and they own 300 hectares and they buy from local farmers for another 150 hectares. They were the first to bring in Cold Fermentation and barrique aging along with picking earlier. When Bodegas Farina started out there were only 9 wineries and today there are 54.
