22 Monywa Standing Buddha, Myanmar (Burma)
We Said Go Travel During our drive we could begin to see the 420ft tall Buddha and the lying Buddha which is also enormous. It is the largest Standing Buddha in Asia but perhaps in the world. Prior to arriving at the complex with the enormous Buddhas, we saw a garden of Buddhas sitting under their umbrellas. We climbed up staircase after staircase (which reminded us all of Mandalay Hill) and found the shopping pavilions closing up. At last we reached the platform for the lying Buddha around the back you can enter the lying Buddha in his left posterior. We ascended more stairs and reached the colossal Standing Buddha with its vast pavilion which at nearly sunset was empty. The stunning view of the area with the last rays of the sun made this brobidigian Buddha seem even more incredible and golden. There was construction on the giant Buddha but you can go up to the 17th floor of the 40 stories.
Boddhi-Tataung (1000 Buddhas) is four kilometers from Thanboddhay Pagoda in a grove of Banyan trees, which each have a Buddha image at its base. A good place for meditation and thinking. See the other videos of Thanboddhay Pagoda and Hop Win Daung Caves where we went earlier on the same day in Monywa, Myanmar (Burma).

Great Overland Adventure in Myanmar: The surprise in Monywa
Monywa a small town in Myanmar, is one of the last few places on #GLAadventure's way back to India. At Monywa, the team visited a 110 year old Gurudwara, met the Sikh families residing there. Some of these families have lived here since their ancestors settled down in this town some three generations ago. The discussions about their life in Monywa continued over langar with the team. Their way of life was a mix of Indian and Burmese culture. From there the team headed to a place called Bodhi Tataung, where there were more than thousand statues of Buddha, spread over a huge area and each under a Bodhi tree. The sight was spectacular and the team, soaked in every moment of this experience before continuing their journey home.

Video with images of the Hpo Win Daung Caves at Monywa a town in northern Myanmar on the eastern bank of the Chindwin River. It is the second largest town in northern Myanmar and serves as a major trade center for agricultural produce. Goods coming from India pass through Monywa on their way to other parts of Myanmar. Across the Chindwin River is a system of sandstone caves situated in a cleft in the Hpo Win Daung hills. The caves and the surrounding hills are named after U Hpo Win Daung, a famous alchemist who once lived among them.
The Hpo Win Daung Caves contain Buddhist statues, wood carvings and murals dating to the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Some of them may date as far back as the fourteenth to sixteenth centuries. There are dozens of large and small caves in the area filled with old Buddhas. It is said that there are over four hundred thousand images in these and other nearby caves. In the Win Kaba cave several statues of a seated Buddha are placed in a row right at the entrances of the cave. The cave is guarded by chinthes or mythical griffins carved from the stone of the rock. In the Myint Mo cave decorative mural paintings are still visible behind the Buddha statues.
