California's official gold mining ghost town, Bodie was once notorious as the wildest town in the West. From 1877 to 1888, the community swelled to more than 10,000 residents and produced over $35 million in gold and silver.
Now a State Historic Park, Bodie is the largest unrestored ghost town in the West

Bodie, California is a ghost town east of the Sierra Nevada mountain range in Mono County, California, United States, about 75 miles southeast of Lake Tahoe. As Bodie Historic District, the U.S. Department of the Interior recognizes it as a National Historic Landmark. The ghost town has been administered by California State Parks since becoming a state historic park in 1962, and receives about 200,000 visitors yearly.
An original ghost town from the late 1800's. Bodie stands today in a state of arrested decay. So coined by the State of California when they took over the town in 1962 to make it a State Historic Park.
In 1859 William (a.k.a. Waterman) S. Bodey discovered gold near what is now called Bodie Bluff. A mill was established in 1861 and the town began to grow. It started with about 20 miners and grew to an estimated 10,000 people by 1880! By that time, the town of Bodie bustled with families, robbers, miners, store owners, gunfighters and prostitutes of all kinds. At one time there was reported to be 65 saloons in town. Amongst the saloons were numerous brothels and 'houses of ill repute', gambling halls and opium dens. Needless to say that there was entertainment for every taste.

Bodie is a ghost town located about 80 miles from Lake Tahoe, east of the Sierra Nevada mountain range, and about 40 miles north of the Tioga Pass into Yosemite.
The town was once a very prosperous gold mining camp, but several fires and eventual downturn resulted in its abandonment. It was designated a historic landmark in 1961 and became known as Bodie State Historic Park in 1962. Presently, Bodie is maintained in a state of arrested decay.
During our visit I tried to keep the other patrons out of as many shots as possible, but there are still a few instances where other people can be observed in the background; I don't think this hinders the atmosphere conveyed by the video very much.
Everything was shot on the GH2 using primarily the 20mm, with the wider shots coming from the Olympus 9-18mm. The glidetrack hybrid was also used for many of the shots. Slight coloring performed with Mojo and encoded at roughly 24mbps resulting in about a 1gb file.

Also registered as a California Historical Landmark, the ghost town officially was established as Bodie State Historic Park in 1962. It receives about 200,000 visitors yearly. Since 2012, Bodie has been administered by the Bodie Foundation, which uses the tagline Protecting Bodie's Future by Preserving Its Past.

Bodie Ghost Town - Bodie, California
Bodie State Historic Park preserves the ghost town of Bodie. Gold had been discovered in the area, although it wasn't until 1876 that a profitable deposit was found. It soon became a bustling mining town with dozens of saloons on Main Street.
Like a lot of such mining towns, it went from boom to bust as the ore petered out. Once home to more than a dozen mines, Bodie's last mine closed in 1942.
Bodie State Historic Park was established in 1962 to preserve what is left of this authentic western mining ghost town.
