THE CITY MUSEUM OF BODØ
the museum was founded in 1888.in that time as Bodø fishery museum. it was a contemporary museum, with the purpose of modernizing the fisheries.
the fishers were to be inspired and educated so they would start using the latest equipment and fishing methods. in the beginning the museum rented premises in the city, but these quickly became too small. in 1903 the building in Prinsensgate (prince street) was finished, and the museum moved in the next year..
At that time the exhibits clearly had a natural history profile. with a large collection of stuffed birds, animals and fish. and a variety of marine animals put on spirits...
In 1936 the Nordland museum was founded, and since 1947 the museum has had a cultural history profile. The public library. Bodø Art society and the Technical Evening school had their venue in the museum through the years. During WWII the museum was the location for several schools and even the national Aid organization used the building for their work. Both Wehrmacht and National Union (the Norwegian Nazi-party) requisitioned the museum for their offices during the occupation. The 27th of May 1940 the city was bombed and two firebombs hit the building. Luckily the employees managed to put out the fire. The museum is one of the oldest buildings in the city center and is built in the neoclassicism style. With a touch of Renaissance... The main purpose of our museum is to tell the story of our city. The story is presented through exhibition and a multimedia show. It also has the exhibit with the dry aquarium which is protected by the Directorate for Cultural Heritage. In addition to the regular exhibits the city museum shows contemporary exhibitions.
