Winemaker Marc Kent at Boekenhoutskloof in South Africa
The chief winemaker Marc Kent at Boekenhoutskloof Winery is a genius with a commitment to quality on all levels and in every detail. And the winery has become one of the most celebrated of all South African wineries today.
The old farm just outside the little town of Franschhoek in the Cape region, was created in 1776. It´s situated in a remote corner of the beautiful Franschhoek valley. The winery’s white-washed, Dutch-style farmhouse, once stood in an orchard of beech trees and from there it got its name. In 1993 the farm was bought and restored and a new vineyard planting programme was established.
The new owners of Boekenhoutskloof have revamped an ancient cellar, and have installed state-of-the-art equipment as well as a quality maturation cellar.
Let´s meet winemaker Marc and hear about how they created at wine concept based on traditions with an eye on the future.

Boekenhoutskloof's Marc Kent on South African Syrah
The Boekenthoutskloof estate in the Franschoek region of South Africa has produced wine since 1771, but its output was sold off in bulk. Winemaker Marc Kent and company arrived in 1994 with a vision to focus their efforts primarily on Syrah and Syrah-based blends. Today, the winery label Syrah stands out as one of the world's best.

L’ABUS D’ALCOOL EST DANGEREUX POUR LA SANTÉ
Thelema Mountain Vineyards- Stellenbosch,South Africa
We are out and about visiting a wine estate at the top of the Helshoogte Pass in Stellenbosch, South Africa. It's an absolute icon in the South African wine landscape and listen to this... it was recently rated one of the world's top 100 estates! Can you guess where we are yet? Today we are at Thelema Mountain Vineyards for something extraordinary, the Thelema Merlot Reserve 2014. August is Merlot month at Friends of the Vine so I've decided to do a little pre-testing and tasting of my own and try 3 of the industry's most talked about award winning Merlots of which Thelema is one.

Boekenhoutskloof's Marc Kent presents his Porcupine Ridge Syrah
Boekenhoutskloof Winery's second label Porcupine Ridge Syrah represents one of South Africa's best values and most consistently impressive bottles. The newly released 2009 vintage represents one of the best to date, which is a remarkable feat considering how its production levels continue to rise to match global demand. Winemaker Marc Kent discusses how the wine is made and why it has struck a chord with wine lovers.
Beyerskloof
In 1988 one of the Cape’s most foremost wine makers, Beyers Truter, had one ideal in mind: to produce a wine of exceptional character. His piece of land could only have one name – BEYERSKLOOF.
Beyerskloof's Pinotage wines will be at the annual Pinotage & Biltong Festival.
Mullineux & Leeu Family Wines: Winery of the Year (Platter's Guide)
So it was with great pleasure that I accepted an invitation from Greg Sherwood, senior buyer at Handford Wines - a superb London wine shop, by the way - to taste some fine terroir driven wines from Mullineux & Leeu Family Wines in South Africa.
I enjoyed very much the Schist and Quartz Chenin Blancs that I tried, as they were crisp and flavorful, with long finishes.
Nicola Tipping hosted the tasting at the store, as she represents the winery and - just by chance - as we were tasting the wines, it was announced that Mullineux & Leeu Family Wines earned the winery of the year award from the famous Platter's Guide.
Glenwood’s new Sauvignon Blanc-Semillon cuvee | Wine Tours South Africa
*Come on a Wine & Food Tour with BKWine* --- Glenwood winemaker DP Burger presents a new Sauvignon Blanc-Semillon blend 2016 that was launched early 2017. The previous year they had five stars in Platter for a 75% semillon 25% sauvignon, barrel fermented and barrel aged. Their new cuvee is an effort to bring forward the sauvignon blanc even more. They have previously also made a fresh and flinty sauvignon blanc, but not that perhaps does not bring forward sauvignons most exciting qualities. DP then started looking on a blend with more sauvignon and some sémillon. It is a 50 / 50 sauvignon-semillon. The sauvignon is made with reductive winemaking to bring out the flintiness, the semillon is made in an oxidative way. Released the wine early 2017, the first vintage 2016. The winery produces 75 000 bottles in total per year, a very small winery, which means that they must focus on quality, and quality alone. They also used to make a pure semillon.
Glenwood Vineyards is a winery in the Franschhoek district. The winemaker and boss is DP Burger. It is a relatively small vineyard focused on making high quality wines. They work mainly with sauvignon blanc, semillon, and chardonnay for the whites and merlot and syrah for the red wines. It is located in a separate valley away from the main Franschhoek valley, in the Robertsvlei Valley, a stunningly beautiful and quite secluded place. Its first wines were launched in 2000 although the first vines were planted much earlier.
