Howth - Hiking the Bog of Frogs Trail
Hiking the Bog of Frogs trail in Howth, Ireland, February 2015.
Howth - Bog Of Frogs
Bog of Frogs is the longest loop walk path in Howth, Ireland.
The 12km long trail follows the coastal line for more than seven kilometers, then returns into the village through a little field, a golf course and a forest area. The bog itself is not on the trail. You have to leave the path if you really want to see it. There are also small beaches, a lighthouse and some very scenic spots on the trail.
In this video I ran the path in 1h 20m starting at 5AM when the sun rises (to avoid the massive crowd that shows up on the trail every single day). Sorry for the shaky parts, I didn't slow down for a reason.
If you'd like to walk or run the path (horses and bikes are prohibited), I suggest to leave your car in the harbor car park, as the length of the trail is 12km anyways and you don't need to mess on the narrow road to the upper car park. Leave that for the lazy a-holes. Or you can arrive by DART (Irish rail) or bike, which are more eco friendly. I suggest an early start as you can see the beautiful sunrise and skip the crowd that turns on the path during the peek (AKA lazy tourist) hours.
I recommend to bring your swimming gear and towel and take a break in one of the five beaches available during the trail.
Enjoy!
Bog of Frogs Loop Walk
The Bog of Frogs looped walk is the longest of a number of looped walks in Howth. Thelisted distance for the walk is 10km however I think it is substantially longer than that. Propper euqipment for changable weather conditions and ample fluids are essential.

The Road to Howth - Day One - Ireland Adventure 2017
On walkabout in Ireland. Day 1 of my Ireland Adventure. I fly in to Dublin and walked to the coastal peninsula of Howth to see the town and walk the cliffs. There was much to see along the way and it gave me a sense of what rural Dublin is like.

Irish Frogs
Frogs in a flooded cattle grid, sitting on their spawn and making noise.
The only toads we have in Ireland are the natterjack toads on the Dingle peninsula. So what you have down in Cork are frogs, which are indeed busily spawning at this time of year. You said they fled when you tried to film them. I presume they hopped away.Common toads (which we do not have in Ireland ) cannot hop so if your lads are hopping about this is further proof that they are big lusty male Irish frogs looking for action!!
- Eanna Ni Lamhna
The first is that in Ireland we only have the common frog and Natterjack toad. The Natterjack Toad is confined to the National Park in County Kerry which would mean that your location is not the right area for the toad. Secondly the life cycle of the toad is different in that they spawn between the months of April & July. Therefore as you saw spawn I am presuming they were frogs and not toads.
