The Cholita Climbers of Bolivia Scale Mountains in Skirts
“Cholitas” are Bolivian women with indigenous heritage known for their colorful attire, round top hats and ornate earrings. In the world’s highest capital city of La Paz, Bolivia, 11 Cholitas are on a mission to overcome sexism and discriminatory attitudes and climb mountains in their traditional garb. Led by Jimena Lidia Huaylas, the Cholita Climbers were once high-mountain cooks. But since December 2015, they've been ascending the country's snowy peaks as mountain climbers. United by their love of mountains and a sense of defiance, the Cholita Climbers will stop at nothing to attain the feeling of freedom that comes from scaling great heights.

Bolivia 2017- La Paz and Chacaltaya
Arrival in La Paz and tour of mount Chacaltaya. Chacaltaya is a must if you're visiting La Paz because you can drive to the summit hut at over 17,000 feet. Many tour guides will take you there on a day trip.
A lot of people visit Bolivia for the climbing opportunities, such as Huayna Potosi or Illimani. If climbing is your objective, then a good acclimation is required. That's why Chacaltaya is a fantastic hike.
Let's climb Illimani - 6450 m - Bolivia 4K
While backpacking in Bolivia, I decided to climb a cheap summit. Huayna Potosi seemed easy and too touristic. So I decided to try Illimani with a guide. But the first night, our guide asked us to go to the village nearby to meet his friends and family. He got drunk and didn't come back. We decided to keep going on our own.
I was shooting with a Gopro 5 and a Karma grip.

THE BOLIVIAN MOUNTAINS
The mountains of Bolivia have great potential for the practice of mountaineering.
Cholitas Climb Illimani Mountain In Bolivia
Two years ago, a group of cholita climbers embarked on an adventure to climb eight Bolivian mountains. Many worked as porters and cooks with their tour-guide husbands, but now they're doing it on their own. Once discriminated against, cholas, or cholitas, are making a resurgence in modern Bolivian culture.

Bolivia’s indigenous women climb new heights
Bolivia's first indigenous president, Evo Morales, has been in office now for 10 years. He has given a voice to the majority indigenous population, although many are now criticising him for not reforming far or fast enough.
But some people have taken matters into their own hands.
Al Jazeera’s Daniel Schweimler reports from La Paz on a group of women who have broken free of traditional stereotypes in a spectacular way.

'Cholitas' reach one of Bolivia's highest peaks
(19 Dec 2015) These women are far from the traditional 'Cholitas' of rural Bolivia.
Not letting their long multi-layered skirts get in the way, on Thursday they put on their mountain gear and climbed the 'Huayna Potosi,' one of the highest mountains in the country.
For years these cholitas -- indigenous Bolivian women -- have dedicated themselves to housekeeping while most of their husbands guide tourists in Bolivia's Andes mountain range.
Domitila Alana Llusco, a cholita mountaineer, said she would always tell her friends 'why can't you climb up (the mountain), why can't you work like them (men).'
With her desire to be taken into account as a guide and with the help of mountain enthusiasts, who liked the idea of reaching a peak and posing for pictures with indigenous Bolivian women wearing traditional clothes, things started to change.
Economically, mountain guides also make more money.
The minimum wage for a housekeeper is around 175 US dollars a month, while guides can earn 35 US dollars per person a day.
Adrian Quispe, a mountain guide, said Bolivia was no longer a chauvinistic country adding that women also have the right to climb mountains.
But overcoming a male-dominated activity was just one of the many hurdles these cholitas faced.
Costly mountain gear, whether it was passed down or rented, was hard to come by.
My feet were too small (for the handed-down boots), Llusco recalls when she toiled to the top of 'Janq'u Uma,' whose peak has an elevation of 6,427 metres (21,086 feet) without boots or spikes.
Now, she hopes the group's effort helps them find projects or funding to continue doing what they love.
On Thursday, Llusco and 10 other cholitas reached the peak of Huayana Potosi at an elevation of 6,088 metres (19,973 feet).

BEAUTIFUL BOLIVIA
Bolivia is a wonderful country with incredible places to visit.
La Paz Bolivia Chacaltaya Mountain and Valle de la Luna
Chacaltaya (Aymara for cold road) is a mountain in the Cordillera Real, one of the mountain ranges of the Cordillera Oriental, itself a range of the Bolivian Andes. Its elevation is 5,421 meters (17,785 ft). Chacaltaya's glacier — which was as old as 18,000 years — had an area of 0.22 km2 (0.085 sq mi) in 1940, which had been reduced to 0.01 km2 (0.0039 sq mi) in 2007 and was completely gone by 2009.[1][2][3] Half of the meltdown, as measured by volume, took place before 1980.[4] The final meltdown after 1980, due to missing precipitation and the warm phase of El Niño, resulted in the glacier's disappearance in 2009. The glacier was formerly one of the highest in South America, located about 30 kilometers (19 mi) from La Paz, near Huayna Potosí mountain.
Valle de la Luna (Moon Valley) is situated about 10 kilometers from downtown La Paz, in the Pedro Domingo Murillo Province, La Paz Department, Bolivia. It comprises an area where erosion has worn away the majority of a mountain, composed primarily of clay rather than rock, leaving tall spires. It is similar to another zone of La Paz that is known as El Valle de las Animas (The Valley of the Souls). It[clarification needed] is an important site of the famous holiday, Dias de los Muertos (Day of the Dead)

Golf Cholitas of Bolivia on Trans World Sport
At a Golf club in La Paz a group of indigenous Bolivian women, or Cholitas, have fallen in love with the sport. These women all work as green-keepers and whenever they get a break from their duties, they relax by playing a few holes.
