Science of Cambridge MK14 1978 (Sinclair's first computer)
The computer museum Musée Bolo at the EPFL campus in Lausanne, Switzerland - which took part in La Nuit des Musées 2014 on Saturday, September 27th, 2014 from 2:00 p.m. to 0:00 - did exhibit several machines celebrating their anniversary this year, including the Sinclair QL (see and the Apple Macintosh. In addition one could have a rendez-vous with a CRAY-2, an IBM Blue Gene/P, a DISER Lilith, a NeXT Computer and many others.
That night I had the very, very unique opportunity to film two gems (MK14 and ZX80) out of Didier Lüthi's private Sinclair computer collection. Many thanks Didier!

The Musée Bolo is an exhibition at the School of Computer And Communication Sciences at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Lausanne, Romandy, Switzerland. Each exhibit has a different theme such as original microcomputers, video game consoles, and computers organized by country. Posters next to each display case explain the exhibits. Currently it houses around fifty computers. It contains the private collection of the hardware engineer Yves Bolognini.

BLUPI EXPLORE... L’HISTOIRE DU JEU VIDÉO SUISSE

La Suisse possède un patrimoine vidéoludique et informatique souvent ignoré que nous vous proposons de (re)découvrir dans cette première étape d’un cycle de conférences dédié à l’histoire du jeu vidéo suisse.
De la fin des années 1980 jusqu’aux années 2000, un petit bonhomme jaune et rond nommé Blupi a accompagné petits et grands dans leur découverte de l’informatique. Tout d’abord présent sur les ordinateurs suisses Smaky, il est ensuite parti à la conquête du monde en visitant d’autres systèmes d’exploitation (DOS, Windows, etc.).
Le destin extraordinaire de ce petit personnage sera retracé par son créateur, Daniel Roux, qui nous expliquera la genèse et les aventures de Blupi (également appelé, suivant l’époque et le pays, Toto ou Eggbert). Nous accueillerons également Marielle Stamm, journaliste et auteure, qui fut pionnière en journalisme informatique, ainsi que Jean-Daniel Nicoud, professeur honoraire de l’EPFL et créateur des ordinateurs Smaky, qui nous aideront à reconstruire le contexte de l’époque.
La soirée sera consacrée à l’exploration du contenu de ces jeux vidéo suisses, des conditions de leur production et de leur réception dans le public. Tout un pan d’une histoire à la fois technologique et culturelle s’ouvrira donc, tant aux yeux éblouis de celles et ceux qui ont connu l’époque des premiers logiciels ludo-éducatifs, qu’à ceux des jeunes générations qui croient encore trop souvent qu’il n’y a de culture vidéoludique qu’américaine ou japonaise.
Grâce à la collaboration du Musée Bolo, vous aurez même la possibilité de jouer aux jeux Blupi sur les machines d’origine. Nous nous réjouissons de vous rencontrer à cette occasion !
