The remote Brazilian city of Joinville in Santa Catarina State has became internationally known for its annual dance festival.
The festival - that takes place every July - plays host to over 5000 dancers with performances by groups from all over the South America, Europe and the USA. It is the biggest in South America and the 4th largest in the world,
Now the residents of the city have one more reason to be proud of Joinville: the city is the first in the world to have a BOLSHOI BALLET SCHOOL outside Russia. The school is not merely for experienced dancers from all over Brazil and South America, but also for the deprived kids.
The foundation course set up by the Bolshoi Ballet School in Brazil is a social project aimed at changing the lives of many disadvantaged children from Joinville. First VLADIMIR VASILIEV, the director of the Bolshoi School, went to all the primary schools in the city, showing to over 50,000 kids what it is to be a ballerina.
As a result, 6, 500 children, from 7 to 10 year olds, applied for the course. Only 832 children were approved in the preselection. After a lot of tests, that went from clinical - with Orthopedists and Physiotherapists - to musical and artistic tests, 132 poor children were given scholarships to the most famous ballet school in the world. For the kids that are part of the social project, good results at their primary school is a priority, if they get bad results at their primary school, they are kicked out of the scholarship programme.
Now, after one and a half months, the course has a total of 186 students: 141 kids doing the foundation course ( 132 by scholarship) and 45 teenagers ( from 11 to 21 year olds) that are doing the junior or senior courses. The students from the junior and senior courses are not in the scholarship programme and they come from all over the country.
By January next year, the four best junior and senior students will go to Russia, to join the Bolshoi. For the kids, there are many years of study to do before the best ones can join the Bolshoi in Russia.
With the arrival of Glasnost in 1988, the Bolshoi Ballet started to discuss the possibility of opening a school outside Russia, that would not only teach the experienced dancers, but also would become a social project that could help disadvantaged kids with talent for the classical ballet dance.
At that time, the Brazilian modern dancer JO BRASKA NEGRAO - who had an international career at the Institute of Modern Dance in Paris and at the Alvin Ailey School in the United States - was teaching jazz dance at the Bolshoi in Moscow.
Jo Braska Negrao is married to JOAO RIBEIRO PRESTES, son of Luiz Carlos Prestes - the founder of the Brazilian Communist Party. Joao Ribeiro Prestes lived in Russia in political exile with his family for over 25 years. Due to the good relations of Joao Ribeiro Prestes and his dancer wife with the Bolshoi, they achieved what was unthinkable less than a year ago: Bringing the first ever Bolshoi Ballet School to Brazil. Joinville was chosen because of its famous dance festival.
Jo Braska Negrao became the General Supervisor of the Bolshoi School in Brazil. She emphasises the social importance of the project and her husband talks about the importance for the Brazilian culture to hold the first ever Bolshoi Ballet school outside Russia.
The school currently has 3 foreign teachers - 2 Russians and a Ukrainian - and various Brazilian teachers, all with foreign experiences in ballet dance. GALINA KRANCHENKO, who arrived last week, is one of the main dancers and teachers in the Bolshoi .

Bolshoi Brasil - Making of Jurei pro amor um dia te encontrar
Bolshoi Theater Russia e Brazil

DATE: 9/05/00
RAFAEL DA SILVA is in many ways a typical 9-year-old boy. He lives with his father, an unemployed builder, mother, two older brothers and his niece, in a small house on the outskirts of Joinville, Brazil.
But despite his families relative poverty, Rafael has been given the chance to pursue his dream of being a dancer. He has a scholarship at the world's most respected ballet institution, the Bolshoi.
An amazing scheme set up by the legendary Bolshoi Ballet is allowing hundreds of underprivileged Brazilian children to attended the school's first branch outside Russia.
Every week day he rises at 5am for another day of school and the rigid discipline of the ballet student.
Rafael attends primary school in the morning, with the girl that is his neighbour and best friend. After lunch, and some exercises in the tiny bedroom he shares with his older brother, he goes to the Bolshoi and submits himself to the will of his Russian teachers.
For him and his family, to be part of the Bolshoi Ballet School is a dream of lifetime and a unique opportunity.
Rafael thinks that maybe his sister, who died giving birth to his niece, is watching over him and helped make his wishes come true.
ALINE DECKER, 10 years-old, is also in the scholarship programme. Before being approved in the tests, she was a great samba dancer. Now, she is one of the best ballet students.
