Bombing of Darwin: US-Australia alliance forged in battle
When Japan attacked the north of Australia, the first fatality was an American Kittyhawk pilot, Lieutenant Robert Buel, whose aircraft and body have never been found. As Alexandra Fisher reports, the sacrifices made by Americans defending Darwin helped to forge the alliance between America and Australia that endures to this day.

Bombing of Darwin 1942
Colour home-movie archival footage of Darwin being bombed by a Japanese air raid in 1942. Filmed off a TV screen in the Australian Aviation Heritage Centre in Darwin Australia.
The Story of Port Darwin (1946)
Footage of Darwin in 1946, after the World War 2 Japanese bombing of Darwin, including images of the bombed out Bank of NSW shown intact in 'The Story of Darwin' (1941). This footage is from Victor Tarhanoff's films, now part of the NFSA's Film Australia Collection.
Darwin audiences got the opportunity to see rare and unique footage of Darwin from the NFSA collection from 15-22 February 2012.
About the filmmaker: In 1941 a steel industry construction foreman called Victor Tarhanoff began filming 16mm Kodachrome amateur footage in and around Darwin, Northern Territory. First posted to Darwin in 1935 and living an itinerant life as he moved from one construction site to another, Tarhanoff filmed in 1941 footage that today contains the earliest surviving colour images of Darwin. His beautiful films offer a unique insight into Darwin life before and after the Second World War. The footage includes aspects of the city such as: the modern bank buildings on Smith Street in the CBD; diners in the elegantly grand Darwin Hotel; the local Chinatown and shopfronts -- showing the multicultural nature of the city.

City Description:
Darwin is the capital of Australia's Northern Territory and a former frontier outpost. It's also a gateway to massive Kakadu National Park. Its popular waterfront area has several beaches and green areas like Bicentennial Park. Also near the water is the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, displaying Southeast Asian and Pacific art, plus a pearling lugger and other seafaring vessels.Elsewhere along the ocean, there's a wave lagoon and Stokes Hill Wharf, with alfresco restaurants and vendors offering harbour cruises. Cage swimming with crocodiles at Crocosaurus Cove and barramundi fishing in the nearby wetlands are popular pastimes. At the city's heart is the Smith Street pedestrian mall, notable for shops selling Aboriginal art and crafts, South Sea pearls, opals and diamonds. Military history can be seen at the World War II Oil Storage Tunnels, housing historic photographs; the Darwin Military Museum, exhibiting weaponry and vehicles; and the Aviation Heritage Centre, with bombers and wreckage.
Weather and Events:
Darwin is warm year-round, with most people visiting during dry season (late Apr–Oct). Fish are most plentiful in tidal rivers Mar–Apr. Popular events include May Day, the music festival Bass in the Grass (May), the cultural celebration Greek Glenti (Jun) and the V8 Supercars auto race (Jun). During the highly attended Darwin Festival (Aug), many free arts performances are held for several weeks throughout the city. The wet season (Nov–Apr) can bring flooding, especially Jan–Mar, and travel to remote bush areas is inadvisable.

Darwin is the capital of the Northern Territory, in the “top end” of Australia.
Traditionally the home of the Larrakia People, Darwin was settled by Europeans in 1869. The city’s isolation has meant that its population has always been low, which is just the way its laid-back residents like it.
On Thursdays and Sundays, locals and visitors head to the Mindil Beach Markets to shop, dance and enjoy foods from all over the world. At sunset, head down to the beach as the sun dips into the Arafura Sea, then catch a movie under the stars at the Deck Chair Cinema.
Learn about the city’s military history, at the Defense of Darwin Experience and the Australian Aviation Heritage Centre. At the Darwin Museum and Art Gallery, discover the region’s local cultures and unique natural environment.
To experience the Northern Territory’s most fearsome residents, pay a visit to Crocodylus Park and Crocosaurus Cove, home to some of the largest captive saltwater crocodiles on the planet.
There are over 20 national parks in the Darwin region, including popular Litchfield National Park. Just an hour and a half from Darwin, Litchfield is set around a sandstone plateau, crisscrossed by deep, narrow gorges filled with monsoon forests, waterfalls and croc-free swimming holes.
Kakadu National Park is a three-hour drive from Darwin. Half the size of Switzerland and home to one-third of Australia’s bird species and some of the world’s oldest rock art, Kakadu is more than a national park, it’s a national treasure.

AA On 19 February 1942, during the Pacific War, 242 Japanese warplanes attacked Darwin in two waves. It was the same fleet that had bombed Pearl Harbor, though a considerably larger number of bombs were dropped on Darwin, than on Pearl Harbor. This aspect of Darwin's history is often overlooked when discussing World War II. The attack killed at least 243 people and caused immense damage to the town. These were by far the most serious attacks on Australia in time of war, in terms of fatalities and damage. They were the first of many raids on Darwin. WIKIPEDIA

Experience Darwin Australia
Experience Darwin Australia
Darwin is the capital of the Northern Territory and Australia's smallest state capital, home to just over 100,000 people. It is a good base to explore the surrounding natural attractions including the World Heritage listed Kakadu National Park. Its blend of Caucasian, Asian and Aboriginal cultures make it an interesting place to spend some time. The city has been virtually wiped out twice in its short history; once due to air raids during WWII and again when Cyclone Tracy hit in the 1970's. As a result, the city has a distinctly modern (albeit small scale) feel to it. Darwin is also the only Australian capital city to have come under substantial attack during a war. On 19 February 1942, Japanese planes made two major air raids on Darwin from the aircraft carrier fleet that had attacked Pearl Harbor less than 3 months earlier. These were the first of 64 air attacks sustained by the city during World War II, the last being on 12 November 1943. (Other areas in northern Queensland and northern Western Australia were also bombed by Japanese aircraft.)
