Bonaire Barracudas Swim & Waterpolo Team had a special sponsor swim around Klein Bonaire with 2 swimmers Anita Smits & Wijnand de Wolf who swam from 6 am till about 11:30, well done both!!
STINAPA Bonaire was present with 3 boats to oversee all activities on the water, guiding the swim around Klein Bonaire and taking press back and forth to the support boats.
Great morning had by all in the Bonaire National Marine Park!!

Ungefähr 800 Meter vor der Küste von Kralendijk, der Hauptstadt Bonaires, liegt eine kleine unbewohnte Insel. Dies ist Klein Bonaire, ein Naturschutzreservat, das zum Bonaire National Marine Park gehört. Die ca. 6 km² große Insel ist bei Tauchern wegen des schwarzen Korallenriffs bekannt, das am Strand beginnt und bis in eine Tiefe von 35 Metern reicht. Außer bunten Fischen sind hier auch Seepferdchen und seltene Schildkröten zu finden.

We took a trip to Scuba dive in Bonaire. It is one of the best dive islands in the world. My cousin became Advanced Open Water Scuba Certified at Buddy Dive Resort.
DIVING IN BONAIRE QUICK FACTS
Bonaire is located just north of Venezuela in the southern Caribbean. This Dutch Caribbean island has protected its marine resources for more than 35 years. Because of this, marine life abounds with more than 470 fish species found in Bonaire’s waters.
Famed as one of the best Caribbean dive destinations, Bonaire hosts amazing coral reefs and long forgotten shipwrecks. Because the island’s dive sites are protected from any currents, this is one of the best places in the world to gain a new certification.
Visitors to Bonaire can choose between boat and shore diving. Most resorts have gorgeous reefs just offshore, but those visiting the further reaches of Bonaire National Marine Park will want to book a few dives from the region’s dive boats.
Furthermore, underwater photography is a favorite activity due to Bonaire’s incredibly clear water and unspoiled ecosystem.

Diving & Exploring the Bonaire Marine Park part3
Typically, the reefs start right at the water's edge and shelve off gently to a depth of about 32 feet (10m). This area, known as the reef terrace, is very narrow along the north coast (as little as 20m wide) and much wider in the south, where it may reach widths of 200m. In very shallow waters are encrusting coral formations, which grow close the bottom to avoid wave action. On the reef terrace, you will find amazing stands of elkhorn and staghorn coral, often with fire coral, patch reefs, and dense stands of soft corals--all inhabited by a dazzling spectrum of reef fish. The tangs and parrot fish will be out in force, grazing and keeping the algae stands under control. Expect to see lots of damsel fish, with butterfly and angel fish amid grunts, coneys, rock hinds and their relatives--goatfish, hogfish, and an abundance of wrasse. On the bottom, look for peacock flounder, lizard fish, and scorpionfish, all of which are so well camouflaged that you may easily overlook them. Goatfish, by comparison, are hard to miss. They make no attempt to hide their presence as they churn up the bottom in search of tasty morsels. Be sure to notice the sticky tentacled anemones hiding within the coral.
Bonaire also has some special reef features, including two examples of spur and groove formations, where the corals form fingers which protrude perpendicular to the shore. Typically, coral formations follow the contours of the coast. Bonaire's reef forms also include buttress formations, where corals have grown out to sea, forming a kind of headland with sandy valleys in between; a very well developed double reef in the south; and several small wall dives. Bonaire also has several large and small wrecks-the most famous is the Hilma Hooker, a freighter which lies on its side at a depth of 30m.

Gemeinsam mit Aruba und Curacao gehört Bonaire zu den ABC-Inseln, gelegen rund 70 km vor der Küste Venezuelas. Die Insel ist nur recht dünn besiedelt (ca. 15000 Ew.). Bereits 1971 wurden die Riffe rund um die Insel zum Bonaire Marine Park erklärt und konsequent geschützt. Offiziell gibt es auf Bonaire und der vorgelagerten unbewohnten Insel Klein Bonaire ca. 60 Tauchplätze, die überwiegend von Land aus betaucht werden können. Der Tourismus hält sich auf Bonaire derzeit noch in Grenzen. Taucher, die individuell auf eigene Faust ohne Guide und Rudeltauchen die UW-Welt genießen wollen, sind hier bestens aufgehoben.

Die ABC-Inseln gehören sicher zu den „europäischsten“ Inseln in der Karibik. Infrastruktur und teilweise auch die Architektur erinnern uns an die vertraute Umgebung zu Hause, fast wie in einer holländischen Kleinstadt. Auch wenn die Inseln selbst heute nicht zur EU und auch nicht zu den Niederlanden gehören.
Bonaire ist dabei noch die ursprünglichste Insel und war in der Vergangenheit hauptsächlich als Taucherparadies bekannt und vom Massentourismus verschont den die Einwohner auch heute noch meiden. Auch wenn sie das ein oder andere Kreuzfahrtschiff durchaus zu schätzen wissen.
Was die Taucher an der Insel so lieben bleibt aber auch für die Schnorchler nicht unerreichbar. Die unter Naturschutz stehende Nachbarinsel Klein-Bonaire bietet eine der interessantesten Schnorchelspots die ich bisher gesehen habe. Und der über die Reederei gebuchte Ausflug brachte uns genau dort hin…

Klein Bonaire
Klein Bonaire is a small uninhabited island located just off the coast of Bonaire. It is about half a mile from Bonaire at its closest point. The island encompasses over 1500 acres. The development of Klein Bonaire was attempted a few times in the past. The final try in 1995, was also unsuccessful. Concerned locals rallied to save Klein Bonaire from development. The Foundation for the Preservation of Klein Bonaire (FPKB) was born. Through efforts of the FPKB and other concerned parties, and monies from the Department of the Interior and Kingdom Affairs of the Netherlands, the World Nature Fundation of the Netherlands and FPKB, the government purchased the island. Klein Bonaire is included in the protection of the Bonaire National Marine Park and is home to turtle nesting grounds.
STINAPA
Bonaire is an island with a unique and diverse nature, both above and below water. Large parts of Bonaire consist of protected nature, among which the Washington Slagbaai National Park and the Bonaire National Marine park. STINAPA is the non-profit organization that’s in charge of conserving both of these nature parks. They not only protect the parks, but also execute a variety of other tasks in the areas of preserving, protecting, educating, maintaining and promoting nature on Bonaire. Here’s their video to share their work with you.
Karibik - Bonaire
Diese Insel der Flamingos liegt nur ca. 50 Kilometer vor der Küste Venezuelas und ist ca. 40 km lang. Sie gilt als eines der besten Tauchgebiete der Welt, was ganz sicher auch auf den 1971 ins Leben gerufenen Bonaire Marine Park zurückzuführen ist. An jeder Basis wird man detailliert über das Verhalten unter Wasser aufgeklärt und sobald man einmal einen Tauchgang dort absolviert hat, weiß man dies auch auf jeden Fall zu schätzen. Auf dieser Insel dreht sich alles um das Tauchen - Bonaire ist eine Insel für Individualisten, hier findet man schnell Kontakt, da alles sehr persönlich und stimmungsvoll abläuft.
Die Insel selber bietet aber sehr gute Möglichkeiten für interessante Ausflüge. Beispielsweise der Nationalpark Washington Slagbaai mit dem dazugehörigen Gotomeer ist wirklich eine Besichtigung wert. Dort findet man die Maskottchen der Insel, nämlich die Flamingos, sowie unglaubliche Kakteenlandschaften und schöne Aussichtspunkte.
Die Hauptstadt Kralendijk bietet kein berauschendes Nachtleben, aber es werden öfter kleine, sehr nette Feste gefeiert. Rundum bieten einige Kneipen und Restaurants eine gemütliche Atmosphäre.
