Whale Watching at Cape Bonavista, Newfoundland and Labrador (by Peter Bull, Newfoundland)
One windy weekend this past summer we took a trip to the Bonavista Peninsula. In 1497 John Cabot landed at Cape Bonavista and discovered this New Founde Land. After a look around the lighthouse, we watched as minke and humpback whales surfaced less than 100 meters off shore. Excited shouts of, Theres a whale! echoed every time one broke the surface and then the cameras started shooting. The other statement overheard more than once was, The batteries in my camera are dead! Be sure to bring extra batteries for your camera as there is too much to capture on one set.
Just as amazing as the whales were the gannets diving into the water after fish. Their aerial bombardment of the ocean followed by their bobbing back up to the surface brought looks of amazement followed by smiles every time. After a few hours at the Cape and a look at The Dungeon we headed into the town of Bonavista to visit the Matthew Legacy Museum. Matthew was the ship Cabot sailed over 500 years ago. Both the history of the Matthew and the workmanship that went into building the replica make it a worthwhile visit.
From the Matthew we went to the Ryan Premises National Historic Site. This museum is housed in restored fish merchant buildings and tells the story of the Newfoundland and Labrador fishery. And quite a story it is! We were fortunate that while at the Premises local musicians Fergus OByrne and Jim Payne gave a concert. In keeping with the sites fishing theme, their songs and stories revolved around the sea. One song rendered was a favorite of mine - Old Polina. The song is about whaling ships racing to Newfoundland. With so many visitors coming to Newfoundland and Labrador to watch whales, it seemed a fitting song to end their set and our visit to Bonavista.

St John's in Newfoundland & Labrador
St. John's, the capital of the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador, is the perfect combination of big-city luxury and small-town charm. As the oldest and most easterly city in North America, this is where heritage lives. Melded with culture, history, and personality, St. John's has survived two World Wars, five centuries, countless hardships and triumphs. It's become a rare, old city full of character, experience and charisma, with a contemporary, sophisticated edge.
Wander down the narrow, criss-crossing streets carved by horse and carriage over 100 years ago. Pass the colourful jellybean row houses wedged together in every space lining the sides of steep hills and hidden alleyways. Once you've meandered down to the working harbour of the waterfront, look towards the Narrows and imagine a time when the waters were brimming full with fishing schooners.
Visit Quidi Vidi, the charming village-within-a-city, which still embodies the spirit of an old fishing outport. Then, hike up nearby Signal Hill through the famous Battery, where tiny wooden homes still cling valiantly to cliffsides ravaged by ocean waves. The unmistakable, iconic Cabot Tower guards the top of Signal Hill, where military men guarded the shores throughout the 1700s and 1800s. Here, Marconi famously received his first transmission across the Atlantic in 1901. Look out over the cliffs and watch the city's harbour and captivating skyline spread out before you. Perched on the top of the horizon is The Rooms, home to the provincial museum, art gallery and archives, standing next to the striking twin clock towers of the Basilica of St. John the Baptist.
As you explore the history of this place, shop at the many fine boutiques, shops, cafés, restaurants, pubs, and art galleries lining the streets. In the evening, sit back, relax, and enjoy live music or local theatre where actors will whisk you away to another place and time.
For nightlife excitement, head to the famous George Street. Here, clubs, pubs, bars, and restaurants are stacked and crammed. Every evening, George Street blazes with energy, especially during the George Street Festival -- five days and nights of dynamic musical entertainment.
Here in St. John's, courteous and lively people will treat you as friends -- willing to send you in the right direction, help you on your way, or even take you there. Always happy to tell a tale, no matter how tall, just to make you smile. Certainly, this city is like no other.

I take no credit for this video. It was a CBC news item in the 1980's. It was downloaded from VHS Tape and the quality is poor. The Bonavista Branch opened on Nov.8,1911 and closed on June 20, 1984.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Welcome to Newfoundland!
Newfoundland was our first province on the Road to 150 tour. We experienced icebergs, fjords, walking on the Earth's mantle, whales, kitchen parties, and swimming in the Atlantic Ocean. But most of all, we fell in love with the people, which is a big part of what makes Newfoundland so special.

►INFO ON TRINITY LOOP:
(Credit below)
For 90 years the Newfoundland Railway was a vital way of transporting people and services across the island. The main railway line from St. Johns to Port Aux Basque was later joined by several smaller branches that connected many populated areas along the coast to it. In November of 1911 the owners of the Newfoundland railway, the Reid Newfoundland Company opened a line on the Bonavista Peninsula. For the most part the railway line was fairly easy to design because of the low elevation changes seen on most of the peninsula's interior.
One problem arose however when they attempted to bring the train into the town of Trinity. The town is located along the coast and is surrounded by steep hills which would have made it impossible to get to by train. The solution was a two kilometer extension that would loop around a nearby pond (later named Loop Pond) and gradually lower the railway tracks to an acceptable elevation. To do this the Reid Company hired the engineer J.P. Powell to design what would become known as The Trinity Loop.
Between 1910 and 1911 the loop was constructed and was used up until the Terra Transport Company closed the Bonavista branch line in 1984. The companies plan was to dismantle the loop and sell it for scrap.
After Closing
But shortly after hearing the news former railway man, Clayton Cook began organizing campaigns and petitions to preserve the loop. With the help of several politicians Terra Transport eventually transferred the loop over to the town of Trinity. It was to long after this that Francis Kelly purchased the land and turned the area into an amusement park which included boat rides, accommodations, amusement rides, a museum, and even a train ride around the loop. In February 1988, the Trinity Loop was registered as a heritage structure helping to preserve its history and structure from drastic change.
The park operated successfully for a number of years but as time went on, peoples interest in the park slowly declined and in 2004 the park was shutdown. But even today there are still many people who want the loop to remain preserved and there are many who wish to see it saved from destruction.
