Bonham, in Texas, Fannin County
Bonham is a city in Fannin County, Texas, United States. The population was 10,127 at the 2010 census.[4] It is the county seat of Fannin County.[5] James Bonham (the city's namesake) sought the aid of James Fannin (the county's namesake) at the Battle of the Alamo.
Bonham is part of the Texoma region.Bonham is located slightly west of the center of Fannin County in northeastern Texas. U.S. Route 82, a two-lane bypass, crosses the northern part of the city, leading east 37 miles (60 km) to Paris and west 27 miles (43 km) to Sherman. Texas State Highway 78 passes through the center of Bonham, leading north 12 miles (19 km) to the Oklahoma border at the Red River and south 10 miles (16 km) to Bailey. Texas State Highway 56, following an old routing of US 82, crosses Highway 78 in the center of Bonham, leading east 6 miles (10 km) to Dodd City and west 6 miles to Ector. Texas State Highway 121 leads southwest from Bonham 41 miles (66 km) to McKinney. Dallas is 72 miles (116 km) to the southwest via McKinney.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Bonham has a total area of 9.8 square miles (25.3 km2), all of it land.[4]
History
Bonham, one of the oldest cities in Texas, dates back to 1837 when Bailey Inglish built a two-story blockhouse named Fort Inglish. It was located about 2 miles (3 km) from the current downtown. Inglish and other acquaintances settled there in the summer of 1837, and the settlement was named Bois D'Arc. In 1843, the Congress of the Republic of Texas assigned the name Bloomington to the city, but finally renamed it Bonham, in honor of James Butler Bonham, a hero and defender of the Alamo. On February 2, 1848, Bonham was incorporated as a city. A 1936 statue of Bonham by Texas sculptor Allie Tennant graces the courthouse grounds.[6]
After the connection to the Texas and Pacific Railway the city began to grow, and in 1885 there were six churches, three colleges, two public schools, three weekly newspapers, a saw mill, two grain mills, a power plant, and about 2,300 inhabitants. 1890 saw the addition of streetcars, an ice plant, and the opening of the Texas Power and Light Company, the utility provider to the area. In 1925, the city was connected to natural gas lines.
During the Second World War, there was a training camp and an aviation school for the United States Army Air Forces in the vicinity of Bonham, as well as a prisoner-of-war camp for captured German soldiers. Parts of the camp, located approximately 0.5 miles north of US 82, can still be visited today.Homer Blankenship, Major League Baseball pitcher of 1920s

The Reagan Ranch Rancho del Cielo in 4K
In the summer of 2017, we had the unique opportunity to visit Rancho del Cielo, Ronald and Nancy Reagan's 688-acre ranch located atop the Santa Ynez Mountain range northwest of Santa Barbara, California. Considered The Western White House during his presidency, it hosted dignitaries such as Mikhail Gorbachev and Queen Elizabeth II.
James particularly enjoyed Reagan's 1962 Jeep CJ-6, and the pair of jackalopes mounted on the wall, inside the house. While outside, we did see deer, but sadly, there were no jackalopes to be found (I'm told they hibernate in the summer).
Reagan's handiwork was everywhere to be seen. He laid the natural rock (sourced from the property) in the outside patio, the faux brick flooring inside the house, and the miles of wooden post fencing surrounding and weaving all throughout the property. He owned multiple chainsaws, and his tools were stored and displayed as he left them. Every tool had its own place and seemed quite worn and fit for ranch work.
It is notable that this is quite a humble place when you consider it belonged to a Hollywood movie star and the 40th President of the United States. Very reminiscent of anyone's grandparent's home and workshop in the country. We were told there were only two presidential seals on the property. One was easy to find. It was prominently displayed above the fireplace in the family section of the house. The second one didn't make itself known until we toured the tack barn. Check out the riding mower: Lawn Mower 1!
So many great stories from this place. My favorite was about how he refused to buy a new bed for the master bedroom as there were already two twin beds in there when they purchased the place. To save money, he zip-tied the twin beds together and put a footstool at the end of his side so his feet wouldn't hang over. A fitting story that explains the man, his ranch, and his philosophy toward life.
What a day! This place would be mountain bike heaven!

History
Greenville was founded in 1846. The city was named after Thomas J. Green, a significant contributor to the establishment of the Texas Republic. He later became a member of the Congress of the Texas Republic. The city was almost named Pinckneyville in honor of James Pinckney Henderson, the first governor of Texas.
As the Civil War loomed, Greenville was divided over the issue of secession, as were several area towns and counties. Greenville attorney and State Senator Martin D. Hart was a prominent Unionist. He formed a company of men who fought for the Union in Arkansas, even as other Greenville residents fought for the Confederacy. The divided nature of Greenville and Hunt County is noted by a historical marker in The SPOT Park at 2800 Lee Street in downtown Greenville. In the post-Civil War era, Greenville's economy became partly dependent on cotton as the local economy entered a period of transition.
With a population of 12,384 in the 1920 census, the city was the 20th largest in Texas at the time.
In World War II, the Mexican Escuadrón 201 was stationed in Greenville while training at nearby Majors Field.

Top 5 Swimming Holes in Texas State Parks
Top 5 Swimming Holes in Texas State Parks
Sharon and MiLena, the Two Tired Teachers, will give you their top 5 picks for swimming holes in our Texas State Parks.
(This video was shot in September of 2019.)
Sharon's first pick was Cleburne State Park. She chose it because it is a great swimming area for little kids. (Part of the reason for the lake to be so shallow was the lack of rain, but it's still great for small children.)
MiLena's first pick was the pool at Abilene State Park. It is open from about Memorial Day - sometime in August. My guess is the closing date is about the beginning of school. The pool fee is $2 + the park entrance fee for people 13 and older, and $1 + the park entrance fee for younger than 13. Of course, if you are camping there, you've already paid the entrance fee.
Lake Mineral Wells State Park is Sharon's next choice. The beach area is wonderful. Sharon gave the park a shout out for the size of the swimming area and the great swimming area itself.
Balmorhea State Park was MiLena's second choice. Warning, the algae on the rocks getting out is extremely slick. Be careful. It is cold, but it is up to 25' deep.
Lake Ray Roberts has large beach areas for both branches of the park. It is a wonderful swim area.
We also want to remind you that we're doing a series of videos about the Texas State Parks.
A bonus is that the teachers mention some great fishing lakes in Texas State Parks, especially for crappie. Lake Arrowhead State Park in Wichita Falls is one of the best lakes in Texas for crappie. Two other good state parks are Lake Brownwood and Lake Mineral Wells State Parks.

He later became a member of the Congress of the Texas Republic. The city was almost named Pinckneyville in honor of James Pinckney Henderson, the first governor of Texas.[citation needed]
In World War II, the Mexican Escuadrón 201 was stationed in Greenville while training at nearby Majors Field.
Greenville was notorious for a large sign, installed on July 7, 1921, over Lee Street, the main street in the downtown district, between the train station and the bus station in the 1920s to 1960s. The sign read: Welcome to Greenville, The Blackest Land, The Whitest People.[13][14] According to history teacher Paul E. Sturdevant of Greenville, the original intent behind the whitest people was to define the citizens of Greenville as friendly, trustworthy and helpful was sincere, and it was meant to include all citizens, regardless of race.[14] In pre-civil rights America, the phrase That's mighty white of you meant that you were honest, not like suspect blacks. The sign thus acquired racial overtones, and the original sign was taken down and placed into storage on April 13, 1965, possibly at the urging of Texas Governor John Connally, who had made a visit to the town weeks before.[14] In 1968, Greenville's Sybil Maddux had the sign reinstalled, with the wording modified to read The Greatest People; the original sign is in the collection of the Audie Murphy American Cotton Museum.[14]

Ft Griffin State Historic Site - Texas State Historic Site
Fort Griffin State Historic Site - Texas State Historic Site
In October of 2018, the Two Tired Teachers visited Fort Griffin State Historic Site right in the middle of nowhere Texas.
Notice, if you have a Texas State Park Pass, it will not defray any of the cost of this park.
The camping part of Fort Griffin is across the highway from the historic part.
Some of the campsites have water and electric, some that are full hookups, and a few that are walk in sites with water only. A couple of the campsites are pull up sites; you pull off the road and the campsite is parallel to your vehicle.
To get to the creek at the park, you have to climb down (and eventually back up) some rather steep steps without a rail.
Fort Griffin does have a longhorn herd. It is on both sides of the park -- the campground and the historic part.
The historic site has a fun information area with many hands on activities. The information building also offered several videos about the people and places.
This historic site has many recreated historic buildings. One of the most fun thing was driving the golf carts from building to building, Driving the golf carts was new to us, and we have more fun than we'd had in a long time.
A third area of the historic site has been sold to a private family, but they let you visit those buildings.
Sharon and her dogs almost had an up close and personal meeting with a skunk. Fortunately, the skunk went on his way, and no one got sprayed.
If you plan on visiting Fort Griffin State Historic Site, you might want to make reservations because you will find no where else to camp for more than 50 miles.
