Even if you only have a passing interest in classical music you’ll know something about Ludwig van Beethoven.
And the house at Bonngasse 20 is where one of the giants of European culture was born in 1770. The museum is actually an annexe of two buildings; the street-front facade and the building round the back in which Beethoven was born and grew up.
In low-ceilinged rooms at the back are captivating artefacts from his time in Bonn up to 1792, like his baptism entry, original portraits of his family and the Electors of the period who employed him, and personal greeting cards he received.
The front building meanwhile delves into his move to Vienna, and has hand-written sheet music, instruments played by Beethoven, ear trumpets for his deafness and even his death mask.
On the Middle Rhine, Bonn is a city that everyone knows for being the capital of West Germany up to 1990. Germany’s current constitution was declared in Bonn in 1949 and many government ministries are still located in the city.

Bonn, officially the Federal City of Bonn, is a city on the banks of the Rhine River in the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany with a population of 309,869 within its administrative limits. The city is the second official residence of the President of Germany, the Chancellor of Germany, the Bundesrat, and the first official seat of six German federal ministries. Bonn is located in the very south of the Rhine-Ruhr region, the largest metropolitan area of Germany, with over 11 million inhabitants.
Founded in the first century BC as a Roman settlement, Bonn is one of Germany's oldest cities. From 1597 to 1794, Bonn was the capital of the Electorate of Cologne and residence of the Archbishops and Prince-electors of Cologne. In 1949, the Parliamentary Council drafted and adopted the German constitution, the Basic Law for the Federal Republic of Germany in Bonn. Whilst Berlin was symbolically named the de jure capital, from 1949 to 1990, Bonn was the de facto capital of West Germany. After the Fall of the Iron Curtain, Bonn remained the seat of government of united Germany from 1990 to 1999. In recognition of this, the former capital holds the one-of-a-kind title of Federal City (Bundesstadt).
The two DAX-listed corporations Deutsche Post DHL and Deutsche Telekom are headquartered in Bonn. Besides, the city known as the location of 19 United Nations institutions and the University of Bonn and is the birthplace of Ludwig van Beethoven (born 1770).

Bonn is a city in western Germany straddling the Rhine river. It’s known for the central Beethoven House, a memorial and museum honoring the composer’s birthplace. Nearby are Bonn Minster, a church with a Romanesque cloister and Gothic elements, the pink-and-gold Altes Rathaus, or old city hall, and Poppelsdorf Palace housing a mineralogical museum. To the south is Haus der Geschichte with post-WWII history exhibits.
